Ringstrasse: The Parliament
  • Tip Rating:
  • Theophil Hansen created the parliament building, constructed from 1873 to 1883 in the style of the Greek Revival. He also created the Pallas Athena Fountain in front of it; this 15-foot figure of the Greek goddess of wisdom is by Karl Kundmann. Until 1918, the elected representatives serving in the Council of the Empire met here in legislative session for the Austrian half of the dual Austro-Hungarian Monarchy which extended from Galicia (now Polish and Ukrainian territory) all the way to Dalmatia (the Adriatic coast of modern-day Croatia). In modern Austria, this is the seat of both the National Council, the lower house of Austria's bicameral parliament whose representatives are elected by popular vote, and the Federal Council, whose members are chosen by the various states to serve in the upper house. To the left of Parliament is the Monument of the Republic, with statues of the prominent Social Democrats Jakob Reumann (mayor of Vienna from 1919 to 1923), Viktor Adler (one of the ideological fathers of the Austrian republic and its foreign minister in 1918) and Ferdinand Hanusch (minister of social affairs from 1918 to 1920). To the right of Parliament is the Renner Memorial, dedicated to Dr. Karl Renner, Austria's chancellor at the establishment of the republic in 1918 and at its re-establishment in 1945 and president from 1945 to 1950.

The City Hall (Rathaus in German) holds the office of the mayor of the city of Vienna and the governor of the state of Vienna, the Assembly and the City Council. It was built in a neo-Gothic style by Friedriech von Schimdt between 1872 and 1883. It has an impressive overall height of 102 meters. On the top of the tower sits the "Iron Knight of City Hall" (Eiserner Rathausmann), which is one of the symbols of Vienna.

    Ringstrasse: The Austrian Parliament
  • Tip Rating:
  • They say that democracy is born in Greece, so the Austrian Parliament building is modelled on greek temples. In front of the Parliament there is a statue of Pallas Athena (Athenebrunnen) - the greek godess of wisdom. This building (1874-1884) was originally designed as the parliament building for the Habsburg Empire. Half of the building was destroyed by World War II. Some of the artwork damaged during the war is only now starting to be restored.

The most famous boulevard in Vienna, 6km, long, made up of wide tree-lined roads, which form a ring around the inner city. It was built in 1860-65, where the medieval fortifications were situated. It’s flanked by grandious public buildings and palaces, built between 1870 and 1880 and beautiful gardens. Its grandiosity, the sorrounding parks and gardens and its liveliness make it one of the most beautiful streets in the world. Among the places overlooking the Ring is The seat of Austrian Parliament (in the pic): built in 1873-83 by Th. Hansen, who drew his inspiration from ancient Greek architecture.

    Ringstrasse: 'Beer-related' events ;)
  • Tip Rating:
  • On one side to the Rathaus there is the Park of the City Hall (Rathauspark). In front of the Rathaus the square is often filled up with stalls with different festive occasions, like the annual Christmas Market, concerts or other "beer-related" events :) As of 19th September the preparation were just beginning, nothing opened yet.

Ringstrasse: On the Ringstrasse - Rathaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna is a walker's paradise, and the Ringstrasse is an ideal place for an architectural stroll. The buildings along the Ring were constructed all pretty much at the same time - in the 1860s and 70s - but they were each given a different historical style, in the belief that certain styles were more appropriate for some buildings than other styles. So the architect-designers raided the past for a wide variety - a melange! - of different motives and themes. (This is called "historicism".) The City Hall, or Rathaus, was built in what was understood to be a "Gothic" style - because it was thought that the "civil ideals" of urbanism have their roots in the urban struggles of the late middle ages.

    Ringstrasse: Votivkirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • This church was built from 1855 to 1879 based on plans by H. v. Ferstel at the suggestion of Cardinal J. O. v. Rauscher and with the help of the heir apparent to the throne, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian (later Emperor Maximilian of Mexico), to commemorate the failure of Libenyi's attempt on the life of Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1853. The neo-Gothic building marked the beginning of urban expansion and was later integrated into the series of Ringstrasse buildings. The original idea was to build an imperial church and hall of fame, but these plans were not realised and in 1862 the Emperor dedicated the Votivkirche as a garrison church; in 1878 it was raised to the rank of a provostry and contacts with the university were initiated. Numerous renowned artists of the day contributed to its interior and decorations (e.g. V. Tilgner, J. Gasser, J. Benk, J. Fuhrich, J. M. Trenkwald).

    Ringstrasse: Parlament's Fountain
  • Tip Rating:
  • The fountain depicts the four rivers which were encompassed by the Austrian Empire in the 19th century: the Danube, the Elbe, the Po, and the Vistula. Now there is only the Danube left. Does that mean that they should take away three of the four sculptures on the fountain?

  • On this place there used to be the Burgbastei (Palace Bastion), which was destroyed during Napoleon’s invasion (1809). It is one of the beautiful park in Vienna, specially in summer when green lush grass and beautiful roses and other flowers look gorgeous
