Ringstrasse: Rathaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Gothic style city hall was built in 1883 by Friedrich von Schmidt. With the 'Rathaus man', a knight´s statue on the roof included, the whole building has an overall height of 102 m. In front of the town hall is the town hall square, where the annual x-mas market is and where concerts and other events take place.

    Ringstrasse: My 1st Heurigen
  • Tip Rating:
  • "HEURIGEN" (or guingettes) is basically small taverns in Vienna's suburbs. Heuriger signify the new vintage is ready. Heuriger is white wine made from blending of grapes & served chilled in Heurigen. In addition, country dishes such as bacons, roast pork & local pastries are served. Some of these heurigen are on the vineyards. So, it's quite an interesting experience to visit one.

    Ringstrasse: Parlament
  • Tip Rating:
  • This building is the center of the two Rooms of the Austrian parliament, the palace rises on the left side of the Ring, forehead to the Volksgarten, and was constructed in 1873-83 from T. Hansen, inspiring itself to the Greek architecture. The immense building has the facade with the shape of a temple, with pronao and fronton and of two wings with final semicolumns and in two smaller pavilions like a small temple; 60 statues of eminent personages of the Greek and Roman antiquity crown the attic. Majestic is the double ramp that go to the body centers, adorned of four bronze groups of dominators of horses, statues of ancients personages and preceded from the Fountain of Pallas Athena, work of Hansen, with statue of K. Kundmann (1902). Inside the building it is interesting the Saulenhalle, hall to peristyle, on 24 gigantic monolitic columns with corinz caphitel.

    Ringstrasse: Vienna's Main Ring
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of Vienna’s main attractions are located either along or within the Ringtrasse – a series of broad boulevards encircling the Innere Stadt (Vienna’s old city) to the south of the Danube Canal. Riding the trams along “the Ring” or walking along it is an excellent way to orient yourself with the city and to see many of its main attractions.

Ringstrasse: By tram 1 or 2
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ringstrasse is a circle which composes the most famous monuments of the city. The easy way to make a tour is the trams 1 and 2 which allow you to see all monuments and then you could decide where you want to go. I am sure that all tourist guides have a description of Ringstrasse so you won't have problem to understand where are you. Some of place you are going to see is Hofburg, Stadtpark etc. If you want to make a tour in Ringstrasse on foot and visit all the basic monuments that will take you all day!

    Ringstrasse: Burgtheater
  • Tip Rating:
  • Burgtheater is one of the oldest stages in the german-speaking world, but the building that you see today dates back to the year 1888 and was built by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. Even when you are not interested in attending a theatre-performance there it makes sense to walk around the building and see some of the great architectonical sights - some of them are shown on my pictures : The lamps at the entrance are made by sculptured eagles, all of the facades are decorated with great stucco-works showing famous actors, poets or characters of famous plays... Take a look also at my last picture, it is the base of a street-lamp in front of Burgtheater.

Ringstrasse: Neues Rathaus - the City Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • I've noticed that City Halls are usually some of the most beautiful buildings in European cities, and the Viennese version (along with the Parisian Hôtel de Ville) is definetly a favorite for me. It is a building of such majestic grandeur that no one can be indifferent in face of it. One of the Ringstrasse's highlights, built in 1872 to replace the old Rathaus. Visits are possible but restricted.

    Ringstrasse: Hofburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Hofburg is a complex of several buildings put together by different emperors throughout the centuries. It grew from an ordinary medieval castle to a sumptuous imperial residence with the growth of the Habsburgs' power. It houses the Imperial Apartments (where once lived Sissi and also the Emperor Franz Joseph) and the Spanish Riding School. But there are many other places of interest, such as the National Library, the Imperial Treasury, the Collection of Musical Instruments, the Collection of Weapons and the Museum of Ethnography. On Sunday mornings, at around 9am, the Vienna Boys Choir sings at the Burgkapelle.
