Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn in Winter
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Schonbrunn Palace or Schloss Schonbrunn was in the possession of the Habsburg rulers since Maximilian II but the palace was passed at the end of the monarchy to the ownership of the Republic of Austria. There are many beautiful rooms with their original furnitures & art plus Emperor Franz Joseph's personal effects for you to see. The Mirrors room & Chinese cabinet rooms are my personal favorite I'd have to say that Schonbrunn has more to offer than Versailles in Paris because the original interior furnishings and furniture have remained. In winter, I decided to visit the interior via its Imperial Tour. Grand Tour with audio guide for 11,50 Euro

2000 - After two and a half years of construction, the newly equipped aquaria-terraria house and the newly constructed crocodile pavillion were opened. For the first time you can observe the crocodiles under water .Here you will find the largest living coral reef in Austria in an aquarium with a volume of 80,000 liters, a glass tunnel under water where you can see the "amazon habitat". And one of the largest breeding spaces in the world of the highly endangered corned iguana ( a real miniature dinosaur ) On this place from 1752 until the end of the monarchy in 1918 was located the chicken yard equipped with an artificial stream and bordering the alley of the administrative building. In the aqarium house you will see tropical reefs in huge salt water aquariums with fish in all the colors of the rainbow, as you pass through a tunnel where other big fishesss swim above your head and at your sides... on one of the photos you can see this fascinating butterfly fish and a black ball of needles, spying on everything with its orange eyes - spooky thing!!!

During the travel to Schonbrunn Palace you have to see the inside. There are a lot of beautiful rooms of the emperors there. You have to also go for nice walk around of the palace and see the park, the gardens, the fountains around the palace and so on.

Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Palace - entrance gates
  • Tip Rating:
  • I started my Vienna tour by spending about a day in Schonbrunn Palace. Not the castle itself,as I was slightly dissapointed of the baroque rooms ,overcrowded and too dark , but the gardens and the zoo.And probably the Desert house and the palm house ( I left those for the next time )... Declared by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage site in 1996 , the palace and Gardens of Schonbrunn - UNESCO about Schonbrunn. For those of you that don't speak German , "gesamtkunstwerk" in the text states for "Combined piece of Art" ,which is the castle and its amazing gardens. Arriving there , the first thing you see are the tourist buses and the crowds heading the same way as you - to the gates of Schonbrunn. You enter in the palace square through the carved gates with golden eagles perched on the white pilons on the sides. There you will see the horse carriages waiting to take you on a ride through the gardens and Vienna

    Schönbrunn: Schönbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The magnificent baroque palace used to be the summer palace of Empress Sisi. Not only are there beautiful and grand state rooms, it also had simpler, cosier family rooms as well. The grounds contains an enchanting park, the Palm House, the Gloriette, a labyrinth and a zoo. There is so much to see that it is easy to spend an entire day here. Not only is the Schönbrunn a summer palace for the imperial family, it was where the Hapsburg resided, and where Emperor Franz Josef was born in 1830. The Schönbrunn is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its historical importance and cultural heritage. OPENING HOURS Differs for the different attractions in the palace complex. But in general, the palace hours are: April - June, Sept., Oct.: daily 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. July, Aug.: daily 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. - March: daily 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. ADMISSION I took the Grand Tour which cost me 9.60 Euros with the Wien Card (without is 10.50 Euros) There is also the Imperial Tour, the Sisi Tour, etc.

    Schönbrunn: Schönbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Emperor Franz Joseph (ruled 1848-1916), who was born here in 1830, spent the last years of his life entirely in Schönbrunn. In 1918, the palace became the property of the new republic. The palace, and the surrounding buildings with the huge park are one of the most significant cultural monuments in Austria. The entire complex was taken up in the the UNESCO`s world cultural heritage list.- Don´t miss the visit to the the magnificent apartments of Maria Theresa, her sitting rooms, bedroom and the parlour in which 6 year old Mozart used to play for the Empress, as well as the parlours and apartments of Imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sissi.- · Emperial tour Visit 22 state rooms with audio guide. Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The initial animal collection at Schonbrunn was formed by the stock of animals from the former palace of Neugebaude and the menagerie belonging to the Belvedere. The opening of the gardens to the general public in 1779 also included free admission to the menagerie. During the course of the 19th century new animals were added to the collection, existing enclosures being adapted as well as new enclosures built. The attractions included elephants, camels, kangaroos and other exotic fauna. At the end of the 19th century the appearance and objectives of the menagerie at Schonbrunn were to change and in time a modern zoological garden evolved out of the Baroque menagerie. The walls between the enclosures were knocked down in 1880 and replaced by bars, so that "the specimens may be viewed more conveniently".

Schönbrunn: The Neptune Fountain & Gloriette
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Neptune Fountain is situated on the foot of the hill behind the palace. It was built during four long years, between 1776 and 1780 (though I don't know why it took so long). In the picture (excuse the tourists and the washed sky) you can see the Gloriette - a belvedere construction, with terrace, to view the entire Schonbrunn and a big part of Vienna from the Schonbrunn hill. The structure consists of a central section in the form of a triumphal arch, flanked by arcaded wings with lofty semi-circular arches. The flat roof with its retaining balustrade was already being used as a viewing platform by the beginning of the 19th century. It can be accessed today via a stairway. Gloriette was built in 1775.

Schönbrunn: The Imperial Court Bakery at Schonbrunn
  • Tip Rating:
  • In a romantic vaulted cellar beneath Cafe-Restaurant Residenz there is the Court Bakery. Here you can watch expert patissiers preparing a classic Sachertorte or delicious Viennese apple strudel. One Classic or Gold Pass to Schonbrunn entitles you to view the hourly apple strudel show here and of course have a picece of the tasteful recipe during the presentation. You can purchase from there all the original ingredients to make apple strudels at home: the special flour, the filling, oil .. and so on.
