Schönbrunn: Palmengarten (The Palm House)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Palm House - Palmengarten is located on the site of the former Dutch Garden and was erected in 1881/2 and designed by Franz Xaver Segenschmid. The Schönbrunn Palm House was the last of its type to be constructed in continental Europe.

Designs of the majestic gardens of the Schonbrunn Palace was made in 1695 by Jean Trehet, a pupil of the french garden designer Andre Le Notre. This is the central axis, a big open space with low flower arrangements, streching from the windows of the palace to the beginning of the hill leading to the Gloriette. Two wide parks on both sides of the central axel are planted with trees and shrubs, with a distinctive straight cut, making beautiful alleys suitable for running or walking. The castle and the gardens were extended to the actual size by the year 1770.

Near the mazes area in the garden of Schonbrunn there is a play area, probably recently built, featuring: - the singing floor (seen in the picture) - nine granite squares makes piano sounds when you step (jump) on them - the "work-out" fountain - you'll have to swing left to right on a device and this will generate hydraulic power to pump a column water to a fountain in front on you - mirror kaleidoscope - another maze, now with mirrors, you can't see the exit but only your reflection in the mirror (pretty small though, don't expect big) - dancing paddles - wooden paddles on springs .. swing carefully - tricky wet bridge - cross the water from stone to stone .. but there are optical sensors and you are squirted with water all over your feet if you're not fast enough and more and more mazes ... The habsburgs really had something with mazes :)

Day 3 : Schonbrun On Day 3, I decided to visit the magnificent Schonbrunner Palace. Schonbrunn can easily be reached by public transport. From the U-Bahn station "Schonbrunn", it is only a five minutes walk towards the Palace. It is really worth to visit the Palace. And then afterwards there is still plenty of time to discover the garden. You should not miss the Gloriette, you can climb on the roof from where you have a splendid view over the gaden and over the Palace. There is also a Zoo, and a Green house with exotic plants. More information and pictures you will find at my Schonbrun page (I hope to atart and finish it it in the near future).

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • And here it is - the main building of the Schonbrunn palace ,the residence of the Habsburg emperors with its sqare used for military parades, or to host the horse carriages of the aristocrats that were coming for the dance ball hosted by the emperess... I decided as long as I was there to take the tour of the castle. You can choose between several options - a small tour a grand tour, guided or on your own, combined with some other sight entrances....took the unguided big tour - 40 rooms. Was expecting to see a guide, and I realised that the talkie walkes that everybody was having (except me) were the guide. Hmmm the castle.....too crowded, too dark, nothing special if you want my opinion. No life, no light, in the whole place...like a huge coffin...even the air was dead , passed away along with its glorious owners....If you want to see an exhibition of gold plated baroque furniture, huge wall tapistry and king's bed, than you can go for it...otherwise, it is a waste of time. open daily as it follows 1 april to 30 june and 1 sept to 31 oct - 8.30 am to 5 pm 1 juli to 31 august - 8.30am - 6 pm 1 nov to 31 march - 8.30am - 4.30pm

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn map
  • Tip Rating:
  • As The area covered by Schonbrunn is quite big ,you might need a map to clear up your view . I consider for myself maps as very useful devices and love to explore them whenever I get the chance. So after you pass the gates, where is the "group and pre-booked tickets" ticket office , you will enter a square with two fountains and the Palace in front of you. If you are not interested in visiting the palace rooms ,you can go either to the children's museum if you have your kids with you - Situated on your right . If kids are left home ,than head to the magnificent gardens - free,Privy garden - 2 euro admission fee here, Maze - 2,60 euro, Zoo - 6 euro, Palm house admission fee here aswell , Desert house - fee,Wagenburg - Carriage Museum Schonbrunn

I am in love with Schonbrunn Palace. I have fallen in love with it as I was 4 years old. Vienna was one of the first cities I've visited, and I've been so lucky to visit it several times. Schonbrunn Palas was the summer residence of the emperor, and of course it is worth visiting both inside and outside. I didn't enter the palace this time, because the queue was very very very long! I suggest visiting the palace in the afternoon because so you can avoid all groups of tourists. Admission is 9,50 €, 8,00 € for children under 18. Guided tours cost 15 €, but you can get a little discount if you have the Wien card (3-day bus and U-bahn ticket). You can visit the gardens for free. You get stunning views of the palace up the Gloriette, so have your camera ready!

    Schönbrunn: Before you go
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want to visit the interiors of Schoenbrunn (which I strongly advise to do) you can get all the details in advance in its official website. You will find there the same information that are given in the audiotapes distributed to visitors at the entrance. The website is in German, English and Italian.

The Neptune Fountain is situated at the foot of the hill behind the Schonbrunn Palace; designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and finished in 1780, it was conceived as a part of the gardens commisioned by Maria Theresa. At the centre of the figural group above a rocky grotto stands Neptune in a shell-shaped chariot with a trident in his hand. To his left is a nymph, while on his right kneels the sea-goddess Thetis, entreating Neptune to favour the voyage of her son, Achilles, who has set off to conquer Troy. Frolicking at the foot of the grotto are the Tritons, creatures who are half-man and half-fish.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Palace and Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Schonbrunn is one of the main attractions in Vienna and can't be missed. You will spend hours walking around it and the gardens. Besides the usual gardens, you will find the Japanese gardens and also a Zoo. Of course, you will have to pay an extra price to enter both the zoo and the gardens. Wear comfortable shoes and take a packed lunch because it will definitely take you more than 4 hours to see everything. Naturally, you will be able to buy food from the small food stalls and restaurants in the Zoo and you can also have a meal in the cafeteria/restaurant at the top near the Gloriette. The latter is relatively expensive compared to the food stalls in the Zoo. Large hot dogs are very popular in Vienna and you will definitely find one to suit your tastes.
