 | | | | Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Palace | | | | | |
We hadn't intended on visiting Schonbrunn Palace on this trip but my husband who ordinarily has an excellent sense of direction and map reading skills, somehow led us not to Karlsplatz where we intended to go but instead close to Schonbrunn Palace! I should have known that we had walked way too far and that the neighborhoods were just a little too quiet, I think we may be the 1st people to ever attempt walking to the Palace from Sudbahnhof... By the time we got there, we ironically didn't really have enough time to visit the Palace since we were leaving for Prague that afternoon and besides we had already seen it on a previous trip, so we had a stroll through the gardens. Unfortunately the grounds were being set up for a concert and covered in fencing and scaffolding but you could still get an idea of the immense scope of the gardens and how grand this palace was. The interior is quite beautiful, you can see some of the rooms on the attached website. If you like lavishly decorated palaces then I'd highly recommend a visit although I would suggest taking the U bahn line U4 to the Schonnbrunn stop instead of walking. There was a bit of a line for tickets when we were there, you can also buy your tickets online and it looks like you do not have to wait with online tickets and that you are not locked into a specific day. There are many different ticket options, some with live guides, some with just audio, some including the gardens. Schonbrunn Palace was built between 1696 and 1712 for the Habsburg family, started by Emperor Leopold I for his son, Joseph I. Empress Maria Theresa was the one who really made it the palace you see today, it was used as the summer palace during her 40 year reign.
