Schönbrunn: "Sissi - Mir is fad"
  • Tip Rating:
  • UNESCO world heritage site "Schloss Schönbrunn" is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vienna. Even though I am not too much of a palaces fan I wanted to visit it, mainly for the nice baroque garden around the palace and the oldest zoo in Europe which is located inside the garden. We skipped the inside of the palace and went straight into the gardens. What a colourful morning walk. Flowers in all colours, especially in Austrian red and white, the blue sky, a yellow castle... lovely. The only problem was that we visited on a hot and sunny day, shadow was hard to find. So we had to cancel a few of our plans like to walk up to Gloriette (from there you are supposed to get the nicest view of the castle and the park) and the visit to the zoo, too. We only went as far as the Neptunbrunnen, from there you get nice views, too.

The Gloriette is an observation platform at the very top of a hill on the ground of Schonbrunn Palace. From there you can admire a wonderful view of the Palace and of the city of Vienna. There´s a bar where you can sit for a while and enjoy the moment.-

Schönbrunn: Privy garden at Schonbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • This lateral garden is the only non-free-entrance garden at Schonbrunn. It's situated on the left hand of the castle and it's surrounded by a u-shaped flower covered promenade, many lemon trees near the palace windows and beautiful floral arrangements in the middle. This may seem like a pretty big garden, but the park behind the palace is some 50 times bigger.

The Privy Garden (Kronprinz Rudolf Garten) is a part of the Meidling Kammergarten which lie in front of the east facade of the Schonbrunn Palace and received its name around 1870, after apartments had been furnished for Crown Prince Rudolf on the ground floor of this wing.

    Schönbrunn: Versailles Junior
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schonbrunn is probably on anyone's list who visits Vienna. If not, it should be. The building itself has over 1400 rooms and I think the only bigger palace in Europe is Versailles. The grounds are lovely with formal sculptured gardens in the front and a much more relaxed informal garden in the back. We got so caught up in the gardens that we were to late to get in to see the interior. I don't regret going there, however, and in this as many instances, we say "next time."

Schönbrunn: Rogue squirrels at Schönbrunn Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Behind the Schönbrunn Palace lies the infamous Schönbrunn park. Designed in Baroque style, this park is together with the palace is also on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1996. I wouldn't elaborate much on this park apart from the fact that it is beautiful in all seasons. Among the attractions are the Roman Ruins, Neptune fountain and the Gloriette on Schönbrunn Hill with a fantastic view of the palace. Many locals & visitors come here to relax, take pictures, jog and enjoy the park. There are many wild squirrels in the nearby forest. I think they're rogue squirrels because they come down from the trees, stop at my feet as if to expect me to give them nuts or something Admission is free

  • Directions: Take the U4 (green line) and stop at Schonbrunn. The park is behind Schobrunn Palace

    Schönbrunn: Schloss Schoenbrunn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schoenbrunn Palace has a varied and colorful past. Check out the history at www.schoenbrunn.at My favorite part of Schoenbrunn is the gardens. They are beautiful and could easily take a whole day walking around-see my travelogues for more photos. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vienna, so be prepared for gobs of tourists.

The Gloriette is situated in a hill above the fountain , facing the Schonbrunn gardens, and offers a magnificent view over the castle , its gardens and Vienna. Fischer von Erlach designed it as the crowning touch of the castle ensemble, but it wasn't until 1775 that it was constructed, when Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg remodelled the park and built the Gloriette. Built in Early Classicistic style ,you will enter the glazed central section walking up the steps, where is the Gloriette cafe. The flat roof of the cafe has been used as a viewing platform since the beginning of the 19th century. There is an entrance fee of 1,99 euro for adults and 1 euro for children. I did not have the time to go up there ,as the Zoo consummed all of my time but I left it for the next time I return:))) working hours : 9 - 18h

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn zoo garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located at the right side of the fountain, The Schonbrunn zoo, the oldest zoo in the world , is incredible!!! It is built in a way that you don't feel the barrier between you and the animals...most of the time they are just at a reach of a hand....or at least seem like... The zoo has several entrances - one is at the end of a alley , after you enter the gardens on your right ,where you see the coffee pavillion ,another one is at the side of the fountain. Between the two lay the colorful carpet gardens of the castle.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Children's museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • As i was going on my "Schonbrunn rooms Grand tour" at some point I passed by an inner yard where there were kids dressed as little princes and princesses. So after the end of the tour , I went to find out if they have adult costumes too - I always wanted to get a photo with one of these as My friend Evina Schmidova - A very talented friend and photographer makes Amazing worn out photos. Unfortunately ,the lady replied it's a Children's museum , but I consider it still a great idea to spoil your kids and bring home great photos as a souvenir. The museum is dedicated to the everyday life of imperial children , the way they dressed ,the way there are taught to greet the emperor and the emperess. Open on Saturday ,sunday and public holidays from 10am to 5 pm And daily on July and August also 10am to 5pm Last admission it at 4pm tho From 1 april till 30 nov ,there is a children's opera inn german every 1st sonday in the month at 2:30 pm Tickets are as follows : children from 3 to 15 years old - 4,50 euro Adults - 6,50 euro Family ticket for 2 adults and up to 3 children - 17 euro One adult and up to three children - 10,50 euro
