One of Vienna's marvels place. The castle is beautiful, but the gardens behind it are irresistable superb and grandous. Schönbrunn is the former summer residence of the imperial family of Austria. It is considered one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Europe. The whole ensemble, which includes the palace, the park with its fountains, statues and architectural features as well as the zoo was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. You can read a very interesting history article about Schönbrunn following this link.

    Schönbrunn: Schoenbrunn(2)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schönbrunn is a grand palace designed with visions of Versailles in mind. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart entertained Maria Theresia and her family and guests here at the age of six. Legend has it that Mozart declared his love for Princess Marie Antoinette, Maria Theresia's daughter, who was 10 at the time. Like the Belvedere, the Schönbrunn palace is a must-see site. Forty-five of the 1,141 rooms in the palace are open to the public. The court architect and designer, Johann Fischer von Erlach, included 139 kitchens in his plans, but not even the emperor had a private bathroom

Schönbrunn: Garden Maze! Long Walks! Great Parks!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The garden maze is a blast...it's smaller than what I expected, but still fun. The gardens are *gorgeous* . One could literally spend all day just walking around the grounds. I recommend climbing to the top of the hill (you'll know which one I mean when you get out there) and having a beverage/snack at the coffee shop...the view is spectacular. And yes, I had fun pretending the garden maze was the one in 'The Shining'...even though it's not *quite* that large. : ) This place is all about the Baroque culture, baby... There are several different ticket prices...if that's an issue (as it can be for all of us at times) just check the website link below for official information. The website is in German, English, and Italian.

Schönbrunn: Schönbrunn zoo - the tropical house
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the tropical forest house constructed over an area of 1000 square meters, the moisture in the air is over 80% which makes it weird to breathe . The rainforests of Kalimantan Island (Borneo) are used as an example for this ecosystem. You will be walking throgh dense forest vegetation on a wooden bridge over water ,where big gray fish swim, and small water streams runing at the sides as colorful birds with unknown names sing from the branches. On the second floor that you access with an elevator, Huge gargoyles called flying dogs (like the one on the pic) originating from India are hanging from the glass ceiling just over your head, trembling like leaves blown from a soft wind Bringing you to the thought - could they just come to life and fly to suck your blood?( they are probably feeding on fruits..hahahaha).I was right - checking the official zoo page - Egyptian Fruit Bat :))) Long forgotten mysterious asian temple gates emerge from the vegetation. An underground blue cave with flying bats.Pythons in a terrarium. Banana tree with fruits . Giant parasite red flower. I actually took the tour twice as you miss something either going on the top floor for the bats and midssing the cave at the bottom ,or vice versa.

    Schönbrunn: SCHÖNBRUNN - THE GLORIETTE

    The Gloriette in the spring

The gloriette was built in 1775 during the reign of Emperor Joseph II and Maria Theresa. It stands on a hill overlooking Schonbrunn palace. When you get to the top of the hill you get a great view of Vienna which is even better if you pay a fee and climb the stairs up to the viewing terrace from the top of the gloriette. If the hill looks too steep to contemplate on a warm day, take note there is a great cafe inside!!

    Schönbrunn: Palmenhaus (Palm House)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The his impressive iron-glass construction (113 m long and 28 m high) was erected in 1881-82 after designs by Franz Xaver Segenschmid. Inside the Palmenhaus you can admire the flora from the jungles of all continents; the building can simulate three different climatic zones : the Cold House, the Middle Pavilion (normal temperatures) and the Tropics House.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schonbrunn Palace is wonderful, it is the former imperial summer residence. It gets its name from a spring that was found on the site. There was a hunting lodge on the grounds before the palace but this was destroyed by the Turks. In 1695 Leopold I asked Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach to design a residence. He wanted a Baroque palace, but it was not completed until the mid-18th century. it was Maria Theresa who employed Nikolaus Pacassi to finish the task. The building is made with strict architectural symmetry, which is also reflected in the way the gardens are laid out. I love it also because of its connection to Mozart,he played his music in the palace as a child. The gardens of Schonbrunn palace are wonderful. The walk up to the Gloriette behind the palace on a hill is a good way to see the gardens and the top offers a wonderful view of the Gloriette and looking back - the palace. The Gloriette is a Neo-Classical arcade which was designed by Ferdinand von Hohenburg. It was built in 1775. open: april - october 8.30 - 17.00 daily, november - march 8.30 - 16.30 daily

    Schönbrunn: Summer Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Schoenbrunn is a beautiful building and a tour of the place is highly recommended. The Schoenbrunn palace was built as the summer residence of the Habsburgs and has gold all over the place - probably to reflect a bright summery feeling. The Habsburgs have left their mark all over Europe with the Schoenbrunn one of the best. There are nearly 1,500 rooms in this place that was completed in the early 18th century as a smaller model of Versailles. There is also a large zoological and botanical park out back with lots of flora & fauna. For up to date info on prices and opening hours check out the link below.

  • This is a must see sight , a magnificant palace and garden which was the summer home of the Hofburg Emperors. You can do the tour yourself, just hire the commentary phones and walk from one point to the next. This Palace is an example of the lavish livestyle of the Hofburg rulers. There is an emphasis on Emperor Franz Joseph and his beautiful wife Sisi. There is an assortment of entry fees depending upon how much you wish to view. We took the Sisi - Ticket which gave us a tour of most sections of the Palace and also entry to the Sisi Apartment in Vienna. We visited the Sisi Apartment the next day which we found more interesting as it was more personal than the Palace. You should allow yourself a minimum of 1.5 hours at each venue. Videorecorders and cameras cannot be used inside the palace.
