Schönbrunn: Schönbrunn palace - the gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • The tour of the castle rooms is scheduled - like every quarter of an hour or so. While you wait to be let in ,you are kindly advised to take a walk in the magnificent gardens of the castle . The flower carpets , perfectly arranged are definitely worth a walk. Antique statues at the sides guard the entrances of the alleys.... The gardens of Schönbrunn are open free of charge from 6am till 8 pm - but you are politely asked to leave the park half an hour before closure.

    Schönbrunn: The Great Parterre

According to the principles of the Baroque design, gardens were expression of a ruler's status and as such were closely related to the architecture of the palace, being an extension of the inside beauty. Schonbrunn's garden - The Great Parterre is a matching work of art as it is the palace itself. This will always be for me the nicest garden of any palace, though I have seen the gigantesque gardens of the Versailles Castle in Paris.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schonbrunn is a former residence of the Habsburgs. The complex was completed in 1730 under Maria Theresa. The entire complex is amazing, especially the inside of the palace and the Gloriette in the gardens. The Palace opens at 8:30 AM and closes most of the year at 5 PM. I recommend getting there early because the crowds will be unbearable at peak hours. No photography is allowed. There are different tour packages available at different prices. You can get packages that show the palace, gardens, and other parts of the Palace. I purchased the Grand Tour, which was 40 state rooms. Check the website for more specific info on what you can see and for pricing. The palace is located a short metro ride outside the city. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit my Schonbrunn page for more specific info.

Schönbrunn: Sch?nbrunn palace - parade square
  • Tip Rating:
  • The construction of the palace begann in 1965 by the plans of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Maria Theresia with the help of Nicolaus Pacassi made in 1743 a reconstruction of the palace . Between 1817-1819 the facades were rebuilt by Johann Aman. On the 19 feb 1945 only one bomb hit the palace, but on the 21 february 269 bombs severely damaged Schonbrunn, its gardens and the zoo. The most severe damage during the bombings was registred in the middle palace building. A bomb hit the roof of the second floor and remained stuck in the ceiling of the big gallery with the paintings of Gregorio Gugliemis. She did not explode but demolished the easern ceiling painting representing the Allegoric of the Military power of Austria.Other bombs caused heavy damage in the garden area by the Main Gate, in the Eastern Cavallier quarters,Castle theater, the park, Gloriette, Desert house,Palm House and the zoo. Straight after the end of the war began the rebuilding at first of the main building. In order to reconstruct the painting of the ceiling in the big gallery, were used diapositives dating before the war. The reconstruction works lasted two years and were finished in 1948.

The Palm House is located on the site of the former Dutch Garden and was erected in 1881/2 to designs by Franz Xaver Segenschmid. One hundred and thirteen metres long, the Palm House consists of a 28-metre high central pavilion and two lateral pavilions which are three metres lower. The Schönbrunn Palm House was the last of its type to be constructed in continental Europe.

    Schönbrunn: Irrgarten/Maze at Schloss Schönbrunn
  • Tip Rating:
  • The maze at Schönbrunn costs €2.90 for adults to get in and once in you can wander the maze to your heart's content - hopefully reaching the middle, where a tree and viewing platform await. The maze is popular with guests, despite being relatively small and it took me a good twenty minutes of indecision, false turns etc. to get to the middle. There is now a second maze with some new variations on the traditional box hedge approach - mirrors forming a kaleidoscope in the middle, stepping stones, springloaded platforms etc. - whilst is also worth tackling, even if the hedging in the second maze is not nearly as advanced as that of the original maze.

  • Directions: Take the U4 to Schönbrünn. The maze is located behind the palace.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The palace was built as a summer residence for emperor family on the place of older which was destroyed. The emperor Leopold I who ordered to build new palace for his son, wanted to have it more impressive than it was Versailles in France. Shame but he hadn’t so much money as Louis XIV. Only after couple years when Maria Theresa ruled the building works were finished. It was also necessary for her 16 children. Their sizes are impressive, as also the count of rooms which are there – 1441 rooms. In that times here were more than thousand employees. Also want to mention this was place where empress Elisabeth lived and as guest here was Napoleon. Behind the palace is located huge French style garden with fountain. And on the hill the building which was also planned as palace, but due to lack of money it was not finished. Nowadays it houses café and from here you can see good view to the city. Here in the palace territory are located park, labyrinth and even zoo. And if you just sit on the park to take rest from walking you may see squirrel! In 1918, in the palace’s Blue Chinese salon negotiations were held which led to emperor Karl I resigning and Austria’s proclamation. Palace and their gardens are really grandiose in their size, so take in mind that you’ll need possibly more time than you think. And take with you water and good shoes :)

Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn zoo - Teddy Bears
  • Tip Rating:
  • A koala was something I wanted to see all my life. And the main reason I got into the Schönbrunn zoo. Is there anything sweeter than the sight of a sleeping koala? maybe a moving koala ;)))) Needless to say , I enjoyed the whole zoo, it went far beyond my expectations!!! The panda couple was sitting side by side in the living room , watching a football game or a soap opera...hahahahha...than one of them decided to take a walk. Koalas have been my all time favorite animals, but I adore aswell horses , pythons , cats - all animals are fascinating actually !!!

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1744-1749 Nikolaus Pacassi created the present exterior of theis beautiful grand palace, some years after its completion in 1713. The palace has its origins in 1559, when Emperor Maximilian II who was looking for a hunting lodge purchased a mansion in the outskirts of the city. Many events from the history of Austria have take place inside the Schönbrunn Palace, a six year old prodigy by the name of Mozart gave a concert in 1772. Maria Theresa held private conference with Prince Kaunitz, Napoleon met with his generals in the Vieux Laque Room, and in 1918 Emperor Charles I signed his abdication of the crown. The state rooms can be visited but the gardens are also worth seeing.

Schönbrunn zoo - or Schönbrunner Tiergarten- is located in the Schönbrunn castle park. It is the world`s oldest zoo and used to be the emperor´s menagerie. While several years ago the animals were pent up in small shoebox-style buildings, they now are kept as appropriate as possible. You can see all kind of animals of every continent, from elefants, giraffes and cheetahs to birds, penguins and prairie dogs. I like the rainforest building in particular. You can pass through a small dark room there with bats flying around (always exciting if their "radar system" works :)), see tropical vegetation and different kind of birds and turtles. There are some (in regard of the minor quality relatively high priced) restaurants and food stands. Plenty of attractions for children of course - besides the animals also playgrounds and a little train going through the castle park. You should plan enough time for visiting the zoo, for sure a couple of hours if you want to see everything! The entrance fee for adults is 12 EUR, there are combination tickets, for example if you want to see the castle, the desert house, the carriage museum and the zoo you pay about EUR 35. There is also a ticket which allows you to visit Schönbrunn the entire year whenever you want at a price of EUR 29. In summer, the zoo closes at 6:30 p.m. . As the zoo is so popular amongst Austrians and tourists try to avoid the weekends to enjoy it with less people!

  • Directions: take U4 till stop "Schönbrunn" - this is the closest stop to main castle entrance. It`s about a 10 minutes walk through the castle park to the zoo. Or - if you prefer the shortest way- get out at U4 stop "Hietzing". There are signs.
