Schönbrunn: And where do you summer?
  • Tip Rating:
  • For Cici (Elizabeth) it was at Schonbrunn with an entourage of 1500 of her closest friends. Take the grand tour of the home and promenade from room to room. Each room is more grand and ornate than the next. After the tour stroll the gardens and climb up the hill to the Gloriette Cafe for a spectacular view and a melange

    Schönbrunn: Schönbrunn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schönbrunn Palace Visit Empress Sisi’s former summer residence. This baroque complex contains an enchanting park, the Palm House, the Gloriette and a zoo. Spend an entire day at Schönbrunn: visit the show rooms with a "Grand Tour with Audio Guide," admire the splendid Bergl Rooms, and stroll through the “Labyrinth.” Schönbrunn, the former summer residence of the imperial family, is considered one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Europe. The Habsburgs resided here the better part of the year in numerous rooms for the large imperial family in addition to representational rooms. Emperor Franz Joseph, who later married the enchanting Sisi and reigned from 1848 to 1916, was born here in 1830. The monarch spent his last years entirely in the palace, which became the property of the new Republic of Austria only two years after his death. Today, the palace is part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage due to its historic importance, its unique grounds and its splendid furnishings.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schonbrunn Palace - click to see my travelogue The Schonbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Habsburgs. Emperor Francis Joseph (ruled 1848-1916), who was born here in 1830, and liked to live the same Spartan life he imposed on the soldiers of his army, spent the last years of his life entirely in Schonbrunn. In 1918, the palace became the property of the new republic. Owing to its historical importance, its beautiful location, its magnificent architecure and the splendid layout of its gardens, this palace is among the very top sights in Vienna. The rooms, shown to the public on guided tours, are mostly decorated in Rococo style. Most of the walls and ceilings are covered with white-lacquered surfaces with ornamentation covered with gold leaf. Bohemian crystal chandeliers and white porcelain tile stoves are also part of the harmonious design. The living quarters and offices used by Emperor Francis Joseph are simple and very unpretentious; by contrast, the state rooms and guestrooms are much more lavish. In 1772, six-year-old child prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave a concert in the Hall of Mirrors. In the Round Chinese Room, Maria Theresa held secret conferences with her Chancellor, Prince Kaunitz. Napoleon met with his generals in the Vieux Laque Room. In the Blue Chinese Salon, Emperor Charles I signed his abdication of the crown in 1918, marking the end of 640 years of Habsburg dominion in Austria and the demise of the monarchy. The Room of Millions, paneled with rosewood and decorated from floor to ceiling with priceless Indian and Persian miniatures, is probably the most magnificent Rococo room anywhere in the world. The Congress of Vienna danced in the Grand Gallery in 1814-15; today, the Austrian government gives state receptions there when important heads of state come to Austria for official visits.

    Schönbrunn: The Schonbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Schonbrunn Palace is the Hapsburgs Empires response the France's Versailles. The palace was begun in 1700 by Emperor Leopold. Successive sections where added onto the palace throughtout the 18th century. By the time of its completion the Schonbrunn had become one of the finest examples of Baroque and Rococo architecuture and design in Europe. The palace consists of over 1500 rooms. You can only see just a small portion of that number on a tour only. They start out from near the main entrance into the palace quite frequently and are conducted in all the major languages of Europe. Tours are conducted in Japanese too. My tour was excellent and I highly recommend it. Outside of the Schonbrunn Palace itself is an extensive park that includes a zoo on the premises. The park is about 1.5 square kilometers with well maintained gardens and ponds decorated with fountains. It is lots of fun to wander around in. I have included more pictures of mine of the Schonbrunn palace in a travelogue section.

    St. Stephens cathedral

Built in the 12th century, St. Stephens Cathedral was originally a Romanesque sanctuary. It was virtually destroyed by fire in 1258, damaged extensively during the Turkish siege of 1683 and during the Russian bombardments of 1945. The Cathedral was eventually restored and reopened in 1948 and today it is one of the greatest Gothic structures in Europe. The interior is rich in woodcarvings, altars, sculptures, and paintings and its proud steeple rises over 450 feet above Vienna. Check out the ornately carved wooden Wiener Neustadt altarpiece dating from 1447 and make sure to visit the catacombs that contain the entrails of 56 members of the Habsburg family. If you’re feeling energetic, climb the 343 steps to the south tower for a great view of the Vienna Woods. Alternatively, take the lift to the north tower to get a beautiful vista of the city and the river Danube.

    Schönbrunn: Schloss Schönbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The enormous and elegant Schönbrunn Palace is one of Vienna's top attractions. Originally the 1,440-room summer palace of the Habsburgs, it was designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed in 1711. Forty of the 1440 rooms are open to the public. The interior is designed in the classic Rococo style of the 18th century with lots of red, white and gold. There are beautiful formal gardens surrounding the palace. Take a look at my Schönbrunn page.

Maria Theresa prefered to handle the state affairs in Schonbrunn. She sure had style! Her favourite architect Nikolaus Pacasi made the decorative rococo interiors and the gardens are another work of art. This is your chance to see where Napoleon slept on his way to victory at Austerlitz. Many people go to visit Schonbrunn and so did we. We did so on Sunday morning just after it had opened and could hardly move among all the tourist groups. When we left we saw many tourist buses arriving and could sigh with relief that we made it just in time. I read that this is the most visited place in Austira. Not to be missed while in Vienna. It is forbidden to photograph inside the castle. Interesting facts: When we were on the plane back home mr haiamisa, a great Habsburg fan and a hobby Habsburg historian, was quite shocked that the girl sitting next to us hadn't visited Schonbrunn and Hofburg! (Well... the young generation...)

The baroque summer residence of the Habsburgers was built from 1695 - 1713 according to plans of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. From 1744 - 1749 it was re-designed by Nikolaus Pacassi. Apart from the exhibition rooms, e.g. the "Bergl room", with their magnificent interiors visitors should not miss the Wagenburg, the classic Gloriette (1775) and the large park with the "Schöner Brunnen" fountain, from which the castle´s name is derived. In the western parts of the park one will find the Palm haus, the largest glasshouse in Europe, and the zoo, which was openend in 1752. At the 20th session of the World Heritage Committee held in December1996 Schönbrunn Palace was put on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites.

This sumptuous baroque palace (1700) is one of Vienna's most popular attractions. It has 2000-rooms-worth of imperial splendour (of which 40 can be visited), complete with a classically landscaped garden. Additional attractions (with separate entrance fees) include a maze and the world's oldest zoo. The pinnacle of finery is reached in the Great Gallery. Gilded scrolls, ceiling frescoes, chandeliers and huge crystal mirrors create the effect. Numerous sumptuous balls were held here, including one for the delegates at the Congress of Vienna (1814-15). The Mirror Room is where Mozart (then six) played his first royal concert in the presence of Maria Theresa and the royal family in 1762. His father revealed in a letter that afterwards young Wolfgang leapt onto the lap of the empress and kissed her. The Round Chinese Room is over the top but rather ingenious too. Maria Theresa held secret consultations here: a hidden doorway led to her adviser's apartments and a fully laden table could be drawn up through the floor so the dignitaries could dine without being disturbed by servants.
