    Museum der Stadt Wien

Whilst the Museumsquartier receives a great deal of plaudits, the Museum der Stadt Wien seems to go largely unnoticed, with its premises in Karlsplatz being in a fairly nondescript post-war building, whilst the Museumsquartier basks in architectural magnificence. The museum focuses on the art history and geographical history of Vienna through the ages with a wide range of paintings and artefacts from through the ages, as well as reconstructed displays from items such as Adolf Loos' living room or Grillparzer's apartment. On the artistic side there are pieces by Klimt and Schiele on display as well as work from the Wiener Werkstätte. There are also other items which plot the development of the city - such as models of the city. The museum is due to be shut for much of the first half of 2006 for renovation work (end of January until end of April 2006). As well as the permanent collections there are also a lot of temporary exhibitions - in particular photographic ones.

Klimt & Schiele FREE of charge every 1st Sunday !

    See Klimt & Schiele-paintings
FREE of charge every 1st Sunday of the month!Museum am Karlsplatz shows a lot of interesting exhibits and on the 2nd floor you will see their Klimt- and Schiele-Paintings among many other great paintings. Taking photos is no problem there !
Every sunday this museum is free of charge for their permanent exhibitions ! You simply go there and ask for the free ticket at the counter. Dont make the mistake to buy a ticket there for the extra-exhibitions, because you would have to pay that also on sundays.
The free part is the PERMANENT exhibition, and that is also a lot more interesting than most of the exhibitions they have as well, but change them every few weeks.

3 floors of some 1.200 sqm each document the history of Vienna from the early Neolithic to the 20th century.
    During my visit, I liked:
-the first plans for a museum building at Karlsplatz - projects by Otto Wagner
-models of the Vienna city in different century
-princes' statue from St. Stephen's Cathedral
-paintings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele

HISTORISCHES MUSEUM DER STADT WIEN (Historical Museum of the City of Vienna)

The Vienna’s history is told through a wide variety of artifacts and works of art. Ground floor tells the story of this area from Neolithic to Roman to medieval times.
On the 1st floor are panoramic views of Vienna; battle scenes from the Turkish wars and number of portraits. The second floor (19th – 20th centuries) has fascinating Napoleonic era salon decorated in the “Pompean” style.
Two large wooden models show what Vienna looked like before and after the Ring was built. Klimt, Kokoshka, Schiele, Gerstl, Moll and others represent Austrian art. Admission free on Fr 9 am – 12 noon.

The Historical Museum of the City of Vienna. An interesting assortment of things, especially for the baroque and Biedermeyer periods. I especially love the enormous maps which should the city as it was at the time of the sieges of 1526 and 1683. There are excellent "historical rooms" showing upper class interiors from the 18th through the early 20th centuries. Some crafts and fine furniture too - Wien Werkstätte, some Klimt and Schiele. The Museum unfortunately fails to engage with Vienna's more troubled history of the twentieth century; this is not the place to go if you want to know what happened to the Jews of Vienna in the 20th century. The post-World War II era is skimmed over as well. I hope that this museum will some time live up to its responsibilities.

His work... well, lots of the color gold.

I like what I see... though I had no words for them.
It's kinda like music... either u like it or u don't.
    As simple as that.
The easiest way for anyone to understand descriptions about arts, as far as I'm concerned, is to see them for yourselves!
