    The Prater amusement park and Riesenrad (the giant ferris-wheel). Although I would not exactly call it a tourist trap this is not the first place I would visit on a short trip to Vienna. Nevertheless the ferris-wheel is a landmark in the city and from it you’ll have a great view. There are several restaurants around, f. ex. the famous Schweizerhaus, overcrowded most of the time. – By the way, the ferris-wheel and post-war Vienna was the set for Carol Reed´s film “The third man” (1949) after the novel by Graham Greene, starring Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard etc. A classic espionage thriller. What really happened to Harry Lime?

  • It's expensive plus u might not get the right thing. Always wait and see what u can find further on, that works and u could bargain - mercants boost prices artificially.

    The Prater. It is a amusement park located just outside of the inner city. There is so much culture in Vienna, that unless you have little kids, don't waste your time. It does have a giant ferris wheel with cars that can hold around 20 people and are as big as a Ford. But other than the great views of the city from atop the wheel, it is just wasted time.

  • Since February 2000 there is every thursday the so called 'Donnerstagsdemo' against the current government.
    Don´t go with your car to the city and avoid public transports in the inner districts, such as e.g. tram 1, 2, D, that are going on the 'Ring', but also the demonstrating people.
    Just keep in mind that you are doing your things in the city on another day than thursday after 7 p.m. .

    Or, hey, join the demonstration!

    There are hundreds of pictures on the web about these demos, but I guess if you just type 'Donnerstagsdemo' on google.com you´ll see them. So it´s not necessary, that I publish here some of them. ;-)

  • The Frued Museum if you aren't interested in him at all! Since I studied him at Uni it was mildly interesting but if you don't know squat about him don't bother - you'll be bored out of your mind!

  • The 'Evening in Vienna' musical concerts scheduled in various historical palaces around the city are comparable to commercial luaus in Hawai'i. These are promoted by costumed 'Mozart clones' around the State Opera house, the old City Hall, and other tourist locations. The program is carefully crafted, mindful of a tourist's attention span, and entirely lacking in Wiener Blut (Viennese spirit). However it is a good costume show and the waltzes are in the genre. I get the feeling these concerts provide pocket money for conservatory students.

    Impossible to find a parking place on the street.
    They are strictly policed and fines are high.
    Parking cost:oS60per hour!!!!!!

  • A guided tour around the Opera House is really not to be recommended, as the groups are extremely large and you really don't see much. The cost is Euro6.50 for about half an hour and this is definitely not good value.
