Modesammlung - well it isn't there....
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is not really a tourist trap but a travel guidebook trap. In several travel guides and on the internet I saw that there is a collection of clothing from past centuries in Vienna, a famously large collection including court dresses. I definitely wanted to go there and after finding out it was a bit South of Vienna, in Hetzendorf, in a castle, we went there. Well, what can I tell you....there was a nice plaque on the castle gate saying that the fashion collection ("Modesammlung") was there as well as a fashion school, but inside the building there were just school offices. Finally we found some people inside an office and asked them about the museum/collection and they were absolutely surprised and had no idea what we were talking about. - Well, after I got home, I did some research and it seems that this collection is not open to the public. Maybe I should tell this to the travel guide publishers....

Currently (summer 2003) there is an exhibition about 20th century fashion in the Hermesvilla in the Lainzer Tiergarten. We didn't go there for lack of time but it sounded quite interesting. Otherwise - wait until you get to Bath/UK and visit the fabulous Museum of Costume....

You don't get what you booked
  • Tip Rating:
  • When booking the Salzburg tour of Vienna Sightseeing Tours,we were asked which language we wanted and said "German". It was noted on the receipt and we paid almost 100 Euro. However, when we were in the bus and after the tour had started, the tour guide told us that there weren't enough German speaking tourists in the bus, so the tour would NOT be in German. It was in Italian and English. To me that meant I had to do lots of translating, and I'm sure I forgot many details since all this was new to me,too. I wouldn't have minded if they had told us when signing up for this tour, but nothing was mentioned about a minimum number of people for a language. I guess we were lucky that there were enough Americans in the bus, so the tour was at least given in English. Had there been many Japanese tourists, we would have paid and would have understood nothing. The tour guide was nice, but she said she couldn't do anything about it, it's the company's policy. They know that tourists are only in Vienna for a short time and once they've got the money, they couldn't care less.

Go with a large group of people who all speak the same language and ask twice, if the tour will be given in your language.

    Expensive Beverages in City Centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • When summer comes to Vienna, it comes suddenly and with such heating force. One day, it is nice and cool, and then the next, it is sunny and hot. When it gets hot, people gets thirsty easily and they will be wanting a nice cool drink - fast. But do not be tempted to buy drinks from the city centre food stalls, shops, etc. The prices of these cold drinks will be very expensive when compared to supermarket prices. A bottle of mineral water will cost Euro 1.50 while in supermarkets will cost less than Euro 0.50. A cold Coke or Iced Tea can cost you Euro 1.80 - 2.00. So, if you plan to spend a long time outdoors, it is better you carry your own water.

Well, if you are really dying of thirst, go ahead and pay a premium price for water, coke or other beverages!

    Versailles take two...yawn..the Belvedere
  • Tip Rating:
  • It IS impressive, but honestly...after 1,234 rooms that all are a funky yellow and very large it just gets boring. I would save my time and money for something else.

Skip the palace and walk through the estate

    Go to the Hundertwasserhaus

    MOZART TRAPS In the pedestrian...
  • Tip Rating:
  • MOZART TRAPS In the pedestrian streets around the Cathedral you'll find many 'Mozarts' offering you all kind of 'authentic' concerts of Mozart, Strauss... music with ancient diguises and so. I must admit I've never been to one, but if I wanted to see a concert, I'd go to the Opera House ticket box office (outside the Opera Building).

    Driving by Fiaker is expensive

Don't use the Fiaker (those carriages with two pulling horses) if you don't have money burning a hole in your pocket. They're expensive - I think you'll pay € 100 for an hour and about € 50 for a small tour through the Altstadt. The Fiaker will let off some jibba jabba about the buildings, but you could probably find all of that in any city guide. After all, they're not so much the historians they seem to be with their funny coats and hats. They want your money no less than those fraudsters in Rome who sell "dancing" Mickey Mouses and flour-filled balloons with faces on it. For much better results in seeing things and acquiring knowledge, walk by foot (strengthens your legs) and read about the things you see (improves your reading skills). Or ask some of the people erring around aimlessly. They will be happy to show off their knowledge and English skills to a foreigner. You may think that it is romantic to see the city from a carriage, and you may even feel like a king doing it. But you're wrong, you're not a king then and people will think about you as a pathetic tourist who has way too much money (and who thinks that what he does is romantic, which it isn't). BTW, the people driving the Fiaker carriages are called Fiaker as well. Thus, a Fiaker drives a Fiaker. I guess you always wanted to know that.

Walk by foot! Ask somebody about the building! Look it up in a city guide! Read the signs the municipality has kindly and providently installed on the buildings!

    Another bogus exhibition!
  • Tip Rating:
  • It costs eight euros per person and the installation is a really crappy installation of a couple of crappy photos and paintings. The exhibition is partly in BA-CA Kunstforum on Feyung and partly in Kunsthalle that you have to pay for ---extra! so the exhibition is called SUPERSTARS - from Warhol till Madonna and the poster features Merlin Monroe. So my mom and I attracted by Merlin went in there and hell we were disappointed: only one, yes one! photo of her! And the rest of the works were really crappy. Pardon my french but dont waste your money and time!

    Schloss Schönbrunn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schönbrunn is jam-packed with tourists - especially the Gloriette Café. If you want to enjoy it at its best and with smaller crowds, go in the early spring.

Instead of the Café at the Gloriette, get the U4 to Hietzing and head for Dommayer.

    The Schubert Museum (Schubert's Guberthaus)

  • The Schubert Museum (Schubert's Guberthaus) - Vienna
    The Schubert Museum

Franz Schubert is one of my favourite classical composers so I felt that I had to visit this museum dedicated to him. This early 18th century building is where the great composer was born in 1797. The building has been handsomely restored. However there is little in the way of interest that might give you some insight into the life of Schubert. The kitchen that the Schubert family used has be kept intact. There are also some painting and sketches of Schubert along with a broken pair of spectacles that he owned. Furthermore Schubert only lived in this home until he was 4 years old so he probably had little of way of memories of it. The house, in case you still want to visit it, is located at Nussdorferstrasse 54.

Vienna card---It won't save you money
  • Tip Rating:
  • I bought Vienna Card like in other cities(Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels), but this one turned out to be a total mistake. 1. It doesn't entitle you a big discount, not like in other places, you'll have free entrance to some museums, it only deducts the prices for 1 or 2 euros. 2. If you are a student, you get bigger discount with your student ID than Vienna Card, and it's not mentioned at all in the manual! 3. It has only 3-day version, not like in other places you have the choice of 1 or 2 days. This product by Vienna official tourist board did a bad job in showing a good image of Vienna to tourists, I would say...
