Spanish Riding School: morning riding sessions
  • Tip Rating:
  • if you are also considering the morning exercise sesions as a cheap alternative to the actual Lipizzaner performances in your Vienna trip, DON'T~! the sessions were just looking at jockeys riding the horses with (classical?) music playing in the background and 6 Euros is absolutely not worth it~

    The original Sachertorte
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the famous "Torte" from Sacher; it looks very good, the package is very fine, but ... it is not delicious ! (my opinion, de gustibus et de coloribus non disputandum).

Brick wall is not brick! :)
  • Tip Rating:
  • When we walked around Vienna, in the centre (1-st district) we saw big brick cube and it was not only one cube, but a few of them. From first sight it seems like made from brick, but in real it is only illumination and they need it for reconstruction different objects. Some people just work inside these cubes and reconstruct sculptures, the parts of buildings and so on in this way. It is quite good way, I think. This one side of "brick" cube is near Hofburg palace.

Do nothing, just know there are no bricks.

    Pretty much everything
  • Tip Rating:
  • which calls itself "Authentic" , "Original" or "Typical Viennese". The most horrible things are the "Inner City Authentic Heurigen" ... there are no "Inner City Authentic Heurigen". A "Heurigen" implies that somebody is selling wine from his own production. If you wanna go too one go too Grinzing (but lots of tourist traps there too).

Best ones are outside Vienna though ... I ll post a tip on how too get there too

    Avoid Vienna Sight Seeing Tour
  • Tip Rating:
  • We went to Budapest with Vienna Sight Seeing Tour. We were very disappointed. There were only 7 of us in the tour. The tour was actually done by Euro Bus company. The bus company uses the same bus for the tour as well as for transporting bus passengers from Vienna to Budapest. The bus had to make a detour to Vienna airport to pick up more passengers. Upon arriving Budapest, the bus made a detour to Budapest Euro Bus terminal to drop them off. When returning, we had to wait another half an hour to pick up passengers at Budapest Euro Bus Terminal again and drop them off at Vienna Airport. They also use the same bus to transport cargo., which means more delay. On the way to Vienna, we had a tour guide who did not provide much information, only pointed out the mountains and lakes to us. Once we arrived in Budapest, we had a local guide, she only spent a short time with us. The tour made 3 stops only: 1) Hero's Sq. 2) one-hour lunch stop 3) Castle District for about 40minutes which is not enough. After that the tour guide left us shopping in down town for 2 hours. We did not stop at the most beautiful building in Budapest - the Parliament. The bus just drove by the parliament. I suspect Vienna Sight Seeing Tour pays higher commission to agents, so most agents promote Vienna Sight Seeing Tour. Ask agent if they have other tour company. We booked the tour at Westbahnhof Information Desk.

Ask them how many stops they make. Ask for photo time at major location

Book with Royal Tour. In Salzburg, avoid Salzburg Sight Seeing Tour. Go with Bob Tour, so rent a car.

    Money changer in West Bahnhof
  • Tip Rating:
  • I wouldnt use this place to change money. I did only because it was Lira I was getting rid of and knew already I was leaving for the states before I would return to Italy. So I just wanted to get rid of it. Money exchange places are never a good value.

Go find an ATM and pull out the money you need. If you are carrying cash from other countries use a bank.

    City Centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • There appeared to be people with flyers for oncerts everywhere. Wearing questionable "period" clothing they try to sell you tickets to what seems an endless number of concerts.

Go more towards the Palaces and places like The Spanish Riding School area where it appeared more under control.

    The seventh commandment

    still!

We had a few small beers at the Trzesniewski sandwich bar (see restaurant tips). These beers are really small (0.125 litres) and are called "Pfiff". Now you might know that I like to keep special glasses as a souvenir. These tiny glasses which look like the beer glass of a Barbie doll are really special, they even feature the logo of Trzesniewski and the word "Pfiff". Of course I wanted to keep one. I put it into my pocket and left earlier than my colleagues who finished their beer slowly. After a while Thomas came after me and told me to return my glass because the others are "kept hostage" by the waiter. He refused to let them go without giving the glass back. Apparently he counts all glasses because he has to pay for them from his own money... I brought my glass back secretly and left as quickly as I could ... totally ashamed ;)

Apparently the glasses cost 2.50 EUR. Maybe you can ask and buy one? Or then, be smarter than me and leave quickly with your whole group...

    Thou shalt not steal.

Cental Cafe: the service was bad
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Central Cafe first opened in 1860 in the former Bank and Stockmarket building in Herrengasse 14, and was a meeting place for Viennese intellectuals to come to discuss over coffee & pastries. Therefore, the cafe holds some historical value which is one of the attractions apart from their good food & drinks. When I got here, I waited for 20 min but the waiter never came round to ask for my order so I left without ordering anything. I guess since the place is packed with tourists, the cafe can afford to choose their patrons. From the menu, the prices are higher than average so bring extra money in case you want to have more than a hot beverage.

  • Tip Rating:
  • usually, people go to a 'Heurigen' while in Vienna. Do not go to Heurigen which are recommended in guides. For example, the big Heurigen in Grinzing ('Hauermandl', 'Reinprecht') are tourist traps and usually full of bus-tourists. Rather ask somebody for a small Heurigen a bit off. These usually aren´t open all the time, but they´re very natural. Examples: Zawodski, Zeiler, Sirbu (all 1190 Vienna)
