Doll and toy museum - very expensive glimpse!
  • Tip Rating:
  • As an avid dollhouse and miniatures fan I was eager to see the Doll and toy museum (Puppen- & Spielzeugmuseum) in Vienna. According to the information I had, there were some lovely doll houses to see. The museum is housed in a nice old house with a lovely courtyard. We went up to the first floor and were charged the amazingly high admission of Euro 4.70 (about 4.50 US$). Vienna is not cheap, but generally doll and toy museums are quite small. Well, our expectations were high after paying so much. What we found was three medium-sized rooms which showed dolls of all kinds and sizes and ages and just one single doll house (and not further toys to mention). It was nice for someone who really likes doll, but the admission was outrageous and maybe they should change their name to doll museum, because as it is now, I think they did a bit of false advertising.

If you really like dolls and are willing to fork out nearly 5 $ for seeing them - you'll be fine. But only then.

    "heurigen" inn

Grinzing stands as a synony for the many small inns selling "heurigen", the "young" wine, and many tour operators organise trips there. Therefore, what once was a laid-back vineyard village at the outskirts of Vienna, has been commericalised and prizes have rocketed. I´m sure there are still cozy nice places, but you have to know them. There are convenient alternatives in less travelled vineyard villages, easily accesible by public transport.

I can recommend Nussdorf - you can get there by bus or tram, and easily find a "buschenwirtschaft" - a place selling the heurigen. A piece of bush tied at the entrance indicates you found a "heurigen" place. Often these inns have gardens as well, and live traditional music

WHAT NOT TO DO IN Vienna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some friends and i went to vienna over the weekend. (1) DO NOT go anywhere by yourself at night. (2) If you see 2 people arguing with each other like a female and a male and he is hitting her, DO NOT interfere. I was walking back by myself to my hotel near San Marco square. I saw 2 people arguing and the male was slapping the female around. I YELLED "STOP!" Well he didn't like that and came after me. We started to fight and he finally decided there was no winning the fight (or so i thought). He went his way with the female and i continued on my way to my hotel. I continued down the back side of the square and noticed a man coming towards me. He acted like he was asking me a question and then out of no where he swung at me and hit me pretty good. Dazed cause of what just happened and confused I fled running and running he ran after me. i later had to jump a fence and go into the water cause i was scared for my life because the man would not giveup. After jumping in the water he realized there was no way he was coming in after me... Security found me and helped me out of the water and called the police for me... The water was very very nasty being that thier plumbing from thier bathrooms and bathubs all run into the water....So you know what that means... I was all cut up from the confrontations and had to be later treated for infections from being in the water...

have a MAP with you avoid dark alleys TRAVEL IN PAIRS OR MORE. remember you are in a different country so its a different world. carry some type of language translation book

  • Tip Rating:
  • Schloss Schoenbrunn - absolutely everybody who visists Vienna goes there. You should do it too. Interesting also around Christmas with its Christmas' market - Christkindlmarkt, which opens each year at the end of November. Trink some hot red wine with spices and juice, called Gluehwein. Extremely helpful in a cold austrian winter.

  • Tip Rating:
  • I would agree with other writers - the quaint-looking little carriages that take people for rides around the city will soon empty your pockets. Those horses must be the best paid inhabitants in Vienna!

  • Tip Rating:
  • HORSE CHARIOTS These chariots are like gondolas in Venice. If you are a tourist, you are supposed to take a ride in one. But if you finally do, bargain hard, as they are terribly expensive!!

  • I never went to a Strauss concert, but I can imagine that many tourists go to one - because of the countless salesmen on the street selling tickets to them.
