 | Vienna Bus,tram&Metro Reviews | Tips 31 - 40 of 188 | | I like Vienna's trams. They drive you everywhere you need and it is ecologically best transport to save the Planet >:)... one day ticket costs 5 Euro and one ride just 1.50 Euro. But it is better to buy the whole day ticket. For those who want to save for Sacher torte or coffee and like to walk, there is no problem to see all important sightseens just using this transport :) I did it twice but if you want to see Schoenbrunn it is pretty far away by feet :) Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The public transports are excellent in Vienna, and also the website of Wiener Linien (the company that runs them) is very helpful. It is in German, but it has a page of information for visitors, in English and in Italian. I strongly recommend to visit that site to get all the details of the various kinds of tickets, with up-to-date prices, but I wish to add a detail that is not mentioned in the tourists' section, but can be found in the ordinary pages in German. There is one more option to the ones described there, that is the weekly card (Wochenkarte), which is valid from Monday to the following Monday 9 am. You may think it is not convenient if you are going to use it only for 5 days, but if you check the price you may give it a second thought: it is 12.50 euro, just 50 cents more than a 72-hrs card, and 11.50 euro less than an 8-days card. I saw lifts in most tube stations I used, for the elderly, disabled, passengers with luggage and the just plain travel weary. What a wonderful system they have here!!! Leave a Comment

As well as strolling along the often leafy footpaths of the Ringstrasse, you can see a great deal by using the tram. The 1 and 2 tram routes run all around the Ring and allow you to hop on and off at will to see the sights, with tram stops conveniently located around the ring, taking you to all the major sights around the ring and linking up with all the underground lines (U1, U2,U3 and U4) that have stations on the Ring. The ring lines are now served by the Siemens Porsche designed ULF (Ultra Low Floor) trams, making it easy to get on and off - even with a wheelchair and/or a push chair. The thing to remember is that the 2 runs anti-clockwise and the 1 runs clockwise. Normal ticketing applies. Leave a Comment

The Wien metro is the best means of transport to move across the city. There are five lines (61 kms) but the network is being considerably extended. You can find a map in the site below. Metro stations are signalled in the streets with a U, as you see from this photo. Leave a Comment

We decided to purchase a 3-day ticket (72 hours) at our hotel. The ticket is valid on any train, metro and bus. It cost us 18,50 euros, which were charged directly to our room. We needed to obliterate it the first time we used it. With the ticket, we were given a city guide with a lot of coupons and discount opportunities - even at monuments, museums, ... by showing the metro tickets at the moment of purchase. Vienna underground system works very well. Trains are always on time and a lit display shows when the next trains are coming. You will never need to wait more than 6 minutes, though. Stations and trains are always enough clean, I found them in a better condition than Paris's and London's. Theme: Subway/Metro

Vienna has one of the best transport systems in Europe. The new buses and trams have low floors - useful for wheelchairs, pushchairs and people on crutches. You can buy tickets on board most buses and trams either from a machine or in some cases the driver. But make sure you have the right change and if you forget your ticket then there's a fine to pay of around 60 Euros. (You then have to travel to the Service Centre at U3 Erdberg to pay the fine). You pay a fine of 40 euros if you are caught smoking in the underground area. For info there is a centre at Stephansplatz underground. If repairs are being done, lines are being extended or if there has been a breakdown, you might find that your tram, schnellbahn or Ubahn are not running. You will need to find the Ersatzverkehr (replacement) which is usually a bus using the tram stops or waiting above the ground near the station exit, often it will have a sign or will be the same number as the transport you were on. Transport survival tip: don't be surprised if you get pushed about a bit during rush hour! Its not usual to queue for anything but to see how quickly you can get on to find a seat before everyone else does or off to get your next connection, it can be amusing to watch if you aren't in a hurry yourself! For timetables try out the wienplan website below: WHAT TYPES OF TICKETS ARE THERE? (Prices - Dec 2004) Fahrschein (Single ticket) 1.50 Euro in advance, 2 Euro in the vehicle Die Monatskarte (Month ticket 45 Euro valid 1 calendar month) Die Wochenkarte (Week ticket) 12.50 Euro (valid one calendar week - Monday- Monday 9:00) Die 8-Tage-Karte 24 Euro (valid 8 days) Die "72 Stunden Wien"-Karte 12 Euro (valid 72 hours) Die "24 Stunden Wien"-Karte 5 Euro (valid 24 hours) Die Wien-Karte (Vienna Card - see General Tips) 16.90 Euro Die Wiener Einkaufskarte (shopping) 4 Euro (valid from 09:00 - 20:00 not on Sundays) Buy your ticket from machines in the station, Tabak shops or ticket booths in bigger stations. Don't forget to stamp (validate) it!! Leave a Comment
