Vienna Flights

There are a few budget airlines serving within Europe now offering cheap prices to fly directly to Vienna. They include Air Berlin (Germany), Sky Europe (Slovakia), and Blu Express (Italy). You can go to their website to check out the prices.

Other international airlines offering cheap flights include Qatar Airline, Turkish Airlines, Italia Air, British Airways, etc.

Vienna International Airport is a nice, modern airport located just 20-30 minutes from downtown by auto or train. It has 2 terminals and 3 concourses serving about 80 airlines and serving as the home airport and hub for Austrian Airlines. Upon arriving at Vienna, we quickly went through customs and flowed through to the transportation area. We found a money exchange, picked up a few Euro, then headed toward the bus area.

Transportation to and from Vienna International includes direct Bus (6 EUR/person - 30 minutes), express CAT train (9 EUR/person - 16 minutes), local train (3 EUR/person) or taxi (23 EUR).

As could be expected, prices in the airport are very expensive... for example, a tall Starbucks cappuccino cost 3.50 EUR.

Located about 10 miles southeast of Vienna, Flughafen Wien is an international gateway to the world. Easy access as well as a simple layout makes this a great place to land after a long flight from North America.

This is a train which takes 16 minutes (exactly 16 minutes and 18 seconds! :-D ) to takes you from the wien-mitte (landstrasse U-Bahn stop) to the airport.
It is a modern and first class train. It is air conditioned and probably the most efficient way to go to the airport. The ticket price is 9 euro one-way or 16 euro two-way if bought in advance. The interior of the train is clean and comfortable.

When you are in the Landstrasse (wien mitte) U-Bahn station, just follow the CAT signs (a green square with an airplane on it).

For a cheaper alternative, you can use a normal train that stops at every station and probably is not a first-class train.

All international flights to Vienna go to Wien-Schwechat Flughafen. The airport is located outside the city, about 18km away. All major airlines service the airport. Not one American airline company flies to Vienna, but their partner companyies do.

Transportation into the city is cheapest by the S7 Flughafen / Wolfsthal tram, which will end at Wien Mitte, a short U-Bahn ride to the center.

Cost is 3 Euro

The ride takes 30 minutes and leaves every 30 minutes from 5 to 21:30

Vienna airport is about a 30 minute ride from the city centre on the S-bahn 7 route, the fare was about 35 ATS at the time.
Pretty much the only reason I would go to Vienna was to either pick someone up at the airport or accompany them back to Vienna after staying with me in Graz!
The S-bahn station is underground in the Airport building which was pretty handy and there was a regular service to the city every 20-30 mins.

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is 18 kilometers (11 miles) southeast of Vienna's city center. It is often referred to as Schwechat -- the name of the nearby town.

Neither my incoming or outgoing flights were direct to/from Vienna. Instead, my incoming flight from Newark, New Jersey had a brief layover in Munich -- and my outgoing flight had a brief layover in Berlin.

The airport itself is clean and pleasant -- with some nice cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops if you are there for an extended period. Most importantly, it offers some very convenient transportation options into the Vienna city center. Upon my first arrival, I took a bus with Vienna AirportLines (ÖBB-Postbus) to the Westbahnhof for 6 Euros.

My next trip to the airport was also by bus -- this time from Bratislava. The bus from Bratislava to the Vienna Airport also cost 6 Euros -- and left me in the same spot as from where I took the Vienna AirportLines bus a week earlier. Since the bus stop is directly across the street from the hotel (NH Vienna Airport Hotel) at which I stayed my final night in Vienna, it was extremely convenient.

While staying in the NH Vienna Airport Hotel, I took the S-Bahn (suburban metro railway) train into the Vienna city center. At the airport, the S-Bahn station is next to the station for the City Airport Train. The difference is that the City Airport Train is more direct (no in-between stops) -- and more expensive. In my opinion, though, the brief difference in time does not justify the difference in the price.
