As well as most European airlines which offer services to the Austrian capital, there are also three Austrian-based airlines: Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air, and Tyrolean Airways, which offer flights from Europe and the US
Airport Wien Schwechat
Vienna’s international airport is 20 km. (12, 5 miles) southeast of the city. Taxis to the centre cost about € 32.00; the airport bus costs € 5.80.
A commuter train on the S7 line also operates between 5 am and 10:15 pm and is a cheaper option at € 2.00.

Most international airlines and some budget airlines fly to Vienna which makes its very attractive for the visitor to come and visit. Also the train connection to/from the airport is ather easy to the city.

I found the set up a bit confusing. Normally on arrival at a new airport I am ok with my orientation. Trying to identify public transport to the city was tricky - there were a variety of people touting for your business.
The official transport was a bus. I took it into town - but the journey terminated at a buding site with a wooden hut.
Best plan your route before arrival. Subway/metro is best if you do not have too much luggage.

VIE is linked to the world by many airlines (Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Iberia, SAS, ect.) and also offers good connections to Eastern Europe. And now a couple of low cost carriers connect Vienna to Germany (Air Berlin, Germanwings).

The Airport is located way out of the city, but there are frequent busses going into Westbahnhof and Sudbahnhof. There also was a bus going directly to Bratislava, Slovakia.
The bus/streetcar/Sbahn/Ubahn system is reliable and extensive

I flew Lufthansa via Frankfurt from LAX. On the way back, our Vienna to Frankfurt flight was delayed and we missed our connection. Lufthansa put us up in the Steigenberger Airport Hotel.
If the weather is good, everything within the 'ring' is a pleasant walk. Cab-drivers, from my experience, are 100% honest. Or you can take a horse-drawn carriage in the city center.

If you're flying in, I would recommend using Lauda Air, which is one of the best carriers my wife and I have encountered in years. Founded by Austrian race driver and entrepreneur, Nicki Lauda, this is a class act. We flew them to and from Amsterdam, and on this relatively short, hour-and-fifty-minute flight, we were treated to wonderful food on real china, which we haven't seen outside business class in years. (See accompanying photo.) The seats, by the way, are goat-hide.
The staff is well-trained, friendly, and highly efficient. The only glitch was the insistance that a largish carry-on bag be checked, a bag we had happily carried on with us -- at a similar size and weight -- on many previous flights.
The airline serves most major European airports, North America, SE Asia, and the Far East.

Vienna is a city that never ceases to astound me - I still have to explore a lot of its nooks and crannies - that's one reason why I love the city as it seems to be made up of lots of smaller towns......
