Security: no need to worry, just use common sense
  • Tip Rating:
  • Having lived in Vienna for quite a while now, I can conclude this is one of the safest cities I've ever been to. There are no really "dangerous" areas at all, public transport is very safe. The only real dangers, I guess, are pickpocketing and bicycle theft. Use caution and common sense. Some areas (Karlsplatz, Praterstern, Schwedenplatz) have crowds of drug addicts hanging around. These people may look scary to some, but are generally harmless (I walk through Karlsplatz on a daily basis and have never seen any actual trouble). There's also a lot of police surveillance there. You may also see drunk and aggressive individuals sometimes, in that case simply stay away. Just as in *any* major city of the world, it is always advisable to "blend in", stay calm, try not to look too much like a helpless and clueless tourist. Although I haven't seen any place in Vienna I wouldn't walk alone at night, it's probably sensible for women to stay in company if possible.

Take a sack for my cack!

Whilst the horses that pull the Fiaker are now required to have a bag to catch their droppings, you are still advised to watch you step. A far bigger problem though is the fact that Viennese dogs seem to be poorly toilet-trained - sadly their snooty and uppity owners don't have the decency to use one of the (scarce) dog loos, but think it fine to allow their pets to foul. Take particular care in parks - I had to berate an ignorant old biddy that letting her dog foul near a children's play area was irresponsible. She went off grumbling and muttering that it was a trek to the nearest dog loo, but at least was better informed. Fortunately since October 2006 there has been a new initiative launched with posters advising to "Nimm ein Sackerl für mein Gackerl" (Take a sack for my cack!).

    Magazine vendors on the street
  • Tip Rating:
  • Along the main shopping streets you will find people selling magazines - a wide range of current affairs, fashion and lifestyle magazines and also a large number of ehem... adult magazines. They carry a lot of foreign titles, e.g. Vogue or Cosmopolitan. If you do think about buying a magazine, you are better off going to a news stand. The magazines sold by street vendors do not have their price regulated - often a copy of British Cosmopolitan will cost in excess of EUR10, and also there is no guarantee that the issue will be the current one. You are better off heading to somewhere like Morawa.

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD??
  • Tip Rating:
  • ...because the green man (walk sign) was lit up! Ok, I know, its an old British joke regarding chickens, but if you are from a country where the green man means no cars are moving, you will be surprised in Austria. Here a green man means that some cars still have the right to turn where you are crossing and you should still watch out especially to see that no-one is talking on their mobile phone and driving round the corner at the same time! Also watch out for trams as they may be running parallel to a crossing and a step in the wrong direction could ruin your holiday plans! Apparently (although I have escaped all fines and arrests so far) it is also against the law to cross when the pedestrian light is red! However if you have ever spent time in the South of Sicily, crossing roads in Vienna will be a piece of cake!

    Chavoriten
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna is a generally safe city, although it does, like any city of close to 2 million inhabitants, have its seamier side. The 10th district, Favoriten, is probably the roughest district - it is a residential area, although most popular with the lower echelons of society. It has a more cosmopolitan feel than other parts of town which can be verging on the twee, but ultimately it is the only part of Vienna I would have to suggest that it is not a wise idea to walk around at night. There are few severe violent attacks, but there is a lot of petty crime, and you may put yourself at an unnecessary risk. As my tongue-in-cheek title suggests, there are a lot of problem teenagers in the 10th.

    WATCH YOUR STEP!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its almost a mathematical equation... Austrians like dogs therefore many Viennese people own dogs therefore they all take them for walks in the street plus there are no rules concerning clearing up after your dog so this equals a bit of a mess sometimes if you are not looking where you are going. Its really the only downside to the city and limits your gazing up in awe at some of the buildings.

    Dangers of Vienna ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Basically there are none. Well ok not more than in any other Big City. But with about 20 murders / year Vienna is actually one of the most safe cities in the world so dont be afraid. The only major problem are pickpockets. Be careful about your stuff. And plz ... DONT LOOK LIKE A VICTIM : This does include : Dont wear your backbag in front (They will just think you got valubales in there and grab from ya anyways). Dont walk around looking at a street map. Look at it. get a direction, ask people if you need more info. Walk as if you know the area (even if you dont) ... They wont steal from ppl which look as if they live here or know the area even if they dont live here. (Think this goes for all places all over the world) There are some areas which you should not go to but as a tourist you wont end up there anyways. But even then its not really dangerouse .. just well ... creppy. Best thing too do if you are in an area in which you dont feel safe is call a cab. (All Cab company have cabs that take credit cards ... but be sure too mention it when you are calling.) Just go too the next street corner look at the street signs call (Best company is 31300 cause they give their drivers schooling on how too deal with foreigners). Cab should be there within 3 - 4 minutes.

Look where you are walking! Beware of dog poo !
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be careful where you put your feet down next time. Vienna has a shocking dirty "secret" - dirty as in doggy poo or dog droppings. Dog poops/droppings are litterred on the streets, alleys, pavements and walkways. Vienna has a lot of dog lovers, and the viennese dogs seemed to be pampered creatures. You can see young and old ladies carry their cute doggies in their arms, in doggy bags, etc., in the metro U-Bahn, restaurants, cafes, parks, etc. You can also see men walking their big dogs in the streets, parks, restaurants, etc. I was at first shocked, later disgusted to see the dog-owners allowing their dogs to pee and poo everywhere they like, especially againsts building walls, on sidewalks, and near parked cars. I am just glad that the dogs don't drop their smelly droppings in the metro or restaurants. Vienna has started a campaign against dog poo and dog owners are now required to clean after their dogs. Hopefully, this action will help to make Vienna a cleaner and better smelling city. :-))

    Horse doo doo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Since Vienna is the big horse buggy town, of course the horses are involved in the game. The city has a loose regulation on the usage of protective doo doo collectors but not eveyone is using them. Eventhough horses are vegetarian, their doo doo smells reaaaallly bad so please make sure you dont step into some. PS The poo is everywhere in the street and yes there is a chance you wont notice before you step in it!

    Karlsplatz
  • Tip Rating:
  • Karlsplatz subway station is in the plain centre of Vienna, next to the Opera house. If you go down you`ll discover the other side of this elegant and impressive city. Especially in winter the subway station is packed with drunk, drugged and homeless people. Sometimes you can hardly breath there because of wads of cigarette smoke. Although they installed some kind of video surveillance last year and although there is a lot of police there, the situation is getting worse and worse in my opinion. BUT, although I walk through the subway station several times a week, I never had any problems with those people, I was never robbed or something like that. Only once some drug addicted insulted me because I didn`t give him money.
