  • Tip Rating:
  • PAY-PER-PIS If you are in a hurry in the middle of Vienna and there are no cafes around, you can use public WC, but remember to carry some small coins with you, as you'll have to pay 0,50 euros per visit.

things you should be prepared for
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna, they say, is quite a safe city. Still tourists should be aware of: - middle-aged people's ignorance of any language other than German - cigarette-butts and dog boops spread on the sidewalks like flowers in meadows - alcoholics, penhandlers and pickpockets in subways - drug abuse in areas like Stadtpark, Karlsplatz and U6-stop Burggasse - partly racist attitude to black people - intrusive glances by locals if you wear something bright and colorful or speak a foreign language I've been to Vienna for 3 years, I should know. As long as you're a tourist though, all will be fine.

Watch out where are you going and what is up :)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Heading to the Rathaus I noticed so special view... There were some reconstruction activities in the street next to the Parliament but imagine the temporary shelter for workers on the top of the house...and such terribly placed without any sense... so watch out...who knows how long it will keep its position ..hehe

    This DIFFICULT German language...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Unfortunately, not speaking German may bring some trouble. Even though I have wonderful friends in Germany, my contacts with strangers in Austria, Germany or CH (German-speaking) were not too nice. I was always treated with indifference, and found no attempts of being friendly except for the people at the hotel. But go try and learn these long, 26-letter German words!

No free parking at the city
  • Tip Rating:
  • Parking is not free - this itself is not annoying. But... Even if you do not see a traffic sign saying that you have to pay for parking, and even if you do not see a parking meter, parking is just NOT FREE. I have learnt it from the fine. I suppose you can pay for parking at some kind of kiosk, however, I'm still not sure.

    Attention Pickpockets
  • Tip Rating:
  • The sign - Attention Pickpockets I've found at the entrance of Schonbrunn palace , but it is probably valid for Vienna in General (as in every big city - keep a close eye on your stuff) In the Ubahn in the evening you can see some spooky characters. That's why they've put recently webcams and huge rooms with equipment and monitors in the main stations. Better safe than sorry....

    Crossing the street
  • Tip Rating:
  • In many southern cities and practically everywhere in the world crossing the street may be very chaotic, even on X-crossings. In Vienna you can feel safe: People keep standing for about 4 minutes before crossing the street, staring at the green traffic light for at least several minutes before they finally walk off. So what's the danger here? Austrian police charge a certain amount of money if they detect people crossing the street when the lights are red. Ridiculous but true.

    TICKS/ZECKEN
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna is a very safe place crime wise and as a woman you should have no fears about walking most places on your own. Try to avoid Prater and 2nd and 10th district parks where it is quiet very late at night. Watch out for TICKS!!! (in German: Zecken)Be careful of long grass and check for little black ticks as they carry Lymes Disease and can also lead to Meningitis. They are rare in the city centre but watch out for them if you go walking in the woods. If you find you have been bitten don't just try to pull it out, go straight to the hospital for the antidote injection. If you plan to stay a while then get a course of injections against the diseases (get them in Austria though as they are very expensive in non-infected areas.) The picture shows what the insects look like in case you aren't sure, they like warmth so check carefully.

    Kurzparkzone & Parking-tickets
  • Tip Rating:
  • Parking a car in several districts in the centre of Vienna ( mostly inside the Gürtel and a few more )you have to pay for the parking during the day. There will be NO EXTRA signs for the parking-zone except white lines with spaces and at the entrance to the district the word " ZONE " is printed on the street... . And you have to buy parking-tickets in a newspaper-shop and put it behind the windscreen.. . And if you use e.g. 2 parking-tickets of 1/2 hour for 1 hour parking - please make sure you fill out the same arrival-time on both tickets ! This sound un-logical to you ? don't worry : WIEN IST ANDERS ! (means: 'Vienna is different!') - and that is exactly what it means ! - read carefully the backside of the parking-tickets - it is explained there clearly in best GERMAN! - Anyway, folks how about Parking-tickets in your hometown ?Would they make any notes in German in Chicago, Oslo, Rome or Nepal ????(:-)))
