~~~ Avoid the Karlsplatz ~~~
  • Tip Rating:
  • Here are hundreds of drug attics and criminals standing, sitting, begging, stealing and lying! I haven't seen any representativ of law enforcement or security, too! It seems it is the worst public place in central Europe (next to the railway station in Frankfurt/Germany)...
    Walk, walk and walk again...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Even if you are a tracker, you'll found that Vienna is a city where you have to walk A LOT!!! Take with you a cream for your tired feet, they'll desperately need a rest after a day walking! A pair of very comfortable shoes is also a must. The risk is to have the need to use the Queen's Wheel Chair in the picture... ;-)
    Overpriced Cafe Houses
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Cafe Mozart is not the most beautiful Kaffeehaus in Vienna - but the prices are among the highest. It is located right next to the famous Hotel Sacher, which Cafe is far more beautiful, but at the same price range.
    Look both ways!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Car drivers in Vienna often take their cue from race car driver Nikki Lauda, so if you are a pedestrian you have to be very careful. Remember, walkers DO have the right of way, but as a visitor to Vienna, you must act like you know this. Drivers won't hesitate to keep on driving if a pedestrian in the crosswalk stops or hesitates. They have no fear, so don't let them sense that you do. While generally good drivers, the Viennese are not "care-free" when they drive, as they might be with the rest of their lives. Be careful out there.
    Asian female travellers beware
  • Tip Rating:
  • OK so this is more an annoyance than a danger. I've been to a few cities in Europe and there are always men who try to pick you up just because you are visibly 'foreign' and single female traveller. I met the most annoying man of all my travels, in the heart of the old city-at St Stephens (Stephensdom). I was looking for souvenirs at the stand (another indication that you are a tourist) when this man of Greek/Albanian extraction approached me. He was polite at first but warning bells kept ringing. Insisted on accompanying me on the rest of my sightseeing in spite of my polite, though indirect decline of his offer. (Maybe it is an asian disadvantage, our culture of always trying not to be impolite-i.e direct, hoping that unwanted men would get the message and go away. I guess it does not work.) The last straw was when the idiot started to put his hand around my shoulders and caressing my arm. While I managed to make a swift exit, my excuse I have to go watch a concert (he insisted to follow me to the door, i guess to make sure that it was true) The next day, I was in the old city again, and lo and behold the idiot was there, in his same jacket, standing around looking out for single asian female travellers and he saw me again, and started trailing me. He was insulted that I lied to him that I was catching a flight at the very time he saw me (he insisted on breakfast, lunch with me so I said I had to fly back). This time, after mulling and fuming over the idiot's actions and words, I had more courage and was more impolite and direct and asked him to GO AWAY, LEAVE ME ALONE. Later, I saw him talking to an asian female tourist, no doubt using the same intro line as he did with me- I guess he makes it a hobby hanging around the tourist area, hoping to trick timid, compliant females into bed, if not to cop a feel or two.
    SUNDAY TRANSPORT
  • Tip Rating:
  • We waited for ages for a bus on a Sunday and eventually came to the conclusion they weren't running and took a tram instead. I've been told they do run on Sundays but you may find the timetable is reduced or different so check that out before wasting precious sightseeing time waiting for one!
    If you decide to try Danube near Copa Kagrana, be aware that water is not clear at all, actually it has color of mud, so once you enter you won't be able so see your legs. Brrr. I didn't find it appealing at all.
    Those stairs are leading to Bermuda triangle, area known for many small pubs. They say that people get lost in these pubs during the night, therefore maybe it is better to avoid those stairs? Otherwise you might be risking to get drunk!!!
    This is not a serious warning but more of a heads up. It's not dangerous either. There are virtually no bagel shops in Vienna. For me this was a huge change always going to Tim Hortons for my bagel and cream cheese or popping one in the toaster at home. There are available..there are two bagel shops which I know of...but they are about 15 canadian dollars for 12 bagels. The way we go through them we would be broke! So a handy tip in this dept. is to bake them! We made 6 dozen today..my mom and I. They are not too difficult but they are a little time consuming. For the easy recipe we used, leave me a comment asking for it...and I would be glad to share it with you.
    Attitude
  • Tip Rating:
  • I just moved here from London and have been rather disappointed with customer service. I find most shop assistants to be rude and unhelpful. My daughter's pushchair is searched in some supermarkets, i fins this unexcepetable. I find that most people in Vienna are rude and disrespectful to black people (most of this I think this is due to ignorance). The dog poo on the streets really bothers me. Apart these and some other stuff, i like Vienna, some of the people and the coffee.
