Dodgy Places at Night.

  • Avoid waiting for the U4 alone at night if possible. Alot of the stations are away from heavily populated areas and sometimes you're all alone with extremely dodgy people around. Around the U4 stations were the only places I saw people totally strung out on messy drugs (like heroin) and constantly approaching me for money. I never get afraid travelling alone but on many of the U4 platforms at night - I was pretty tense.

    Riding the public transport without ticket

  • You can ride almost without any danger to run into a control on the tramway lines circling on the Ring. I have never seen an inspector checking the tickets there. Controls are not too frequent overall, but be careful when riding the U1 (the red subway line). There are quite many controls there, compared to other lines. If you are caught, the price to pay is € 60.

  • No doubt the usual guidelines about pickpockets apply. But what I mean is, Vienna is very expensive. And this from one who lived in London for ten years!

    This is one of the safest and cleanest cities outside of Switzerland I have visited. Unless you streak with a Nazi flag tatooed on your face through the Prater Park at midnight I think you will be perfectly fine in Vienna.

  • Use your head. Vienna is a large metropolis and tourists stand out. When my friend and I were having lunch in in Vienna, a woman came in to the cafe with a sign in German, French, English and some Slavic-looking language that she was a deaf mute and please give her money. So watch out for scams like that.

  • Stay away from the bus tours. The travel brochures looked really nice but it was useless. We decide to take the city tour and the tour guide was aweful. He spoke at least 5 different languages at the same time so it was hard to understand him (we took the english tour) and we just flew by all the sights not knowing what they were and why we were there. Better off footing it yourself.

  • Austria may be one of "the richest countries in the world", yet it has not been able to afford something other countries have long been able to achieve: an electric entrance control to the subway. It has the advantage that foreigners can travel unnoticed without any tickets (since you can get on and out freely), however, keep in mind that in case a controller snatches you, you'd pay about 60 Euros, and 2 Euros in addition for the ticket.

  • Vienna tends to be quite an expensive city - especially if you are tempted by the famous sachertorte in any of the touristy areas.

  • If you mind smokers-be warned. Austrians are quite fond of smoking. You most likely won't make any friends complaining about too much smoking in Austria. Even though i smoke some of the bars in vienna are so smoky that i cannot even stand it in there. Very few restaurants have a smoking or non-smoking section.
