  • Oompah band having fun - Austria
    Oompah band having fun
    by nhcram
Whilst out one day we found a lovely bar in the mountains that had live music. The guys in the band wore traditional costume and they clearly loved entertaining the locals and tourists alike. The bar soon filled and many people were clapping and joining in. The clapping part was good as everybody did it at different speeds! It was great fun and it certainly made you stay and have more beer and schapps!
This bar was in the Bad Goisern area about an hour from Salzburg

Lower Austria is the largest federal state in Austria, with a surface of 19,163 sq km and a population of 1 600 000 inhabitants.

The Lower Austria margin Vienna on all sides.

The landscape of the region is very diverse, from the Danube Valley to the high mountain Schneeberg, then to the hills covered with vineyards, fruit trees and forests.

Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) is a province with an old history, and many ancient buildings, with a superb architecture and an extraordinary significance for the whole Austria.
Here, in the Lower Austria it was discovered the 25,000- year-old statue, named Venus of Willendorf, one of the earliest archaeological finds in Europe.

Since 1986, the capital of the province is St.Pölten, an old and quietly town, with a population of 49,000 inhabitants.

The Danube Valley creates a fantastic ferry tall landscape, and a marvellous atmosphere.
On the banks of the Danube River, there are a lot of towns and villages with an extraordinary face.
Melk is an attraction for the many tourists or wanders that come here to the famous Melk baroque monastery.
On the shores of the Danube you can find the old towns Krems and Dürnstein.

Semmering is an important and known winter station in the south part of the province.
Here you can find a good made ski piste, good hotels and restaurants for all the desires of the tourists.

    The Rax Alpe,
The Schneeberg is the highest peak (2,076 m) in Lower Austria.
The Erlaufsee with its fascinating landscape of its shores,
The spa town Baden with its Romans Bath,
    The lovely small village Kleinzell,
and many others constitute the treasures of the region.

Vienna is he capital of Austria, and the political and administrativ centre of the country.

On a surface of 415 square kilometres lives a population of 1 600 000 people.

The Danube Valley is an important part of Vienna’s natural scenery, but the low hills of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) also make a good combination with the large river.

Vienna has a lot of parks and gardens with splendid flower combinations, clean and romantic alleyways, and a quietly atmosphere.

All the stone constructions of the city make a good mixture with the green part of the region.
The history of Vienna is very old, and it began to the Celts that made here the Celtic tribe named Vinid.
The Romans arrived here around 15 BC, and built the camp Vindobona there.
The ruins of the ancient fortress are to be seeing in the centre of the city, in front of the Imperial Palace, Hofburg.

Now, Vienna contains 23 districts, but the many old constructions, with historical significance there are in the 1st district, named Innere Stadt.

The city is like an open-air museum, with very important buildings.
For the many tourists that come here, there are a lot of attractions here:
The Imperial Palace Hofburg, home of many generations of Austrian Imperators,
    The Palace Belvedere,
    The Palace Schönbrunn,
    The Stephansdom,
    The Staatsopper,
    The Museums Quartier,
The Kunsthistorisches and the Naturhistorisches Museum,
And many other remains of the ancient history, there are in the old city.

Vienna is also the capital of the music and its middle point.
Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms, Haydn and many others, are very important names for all the lovers of the classical music.

But Vienna is not a city that lives only in the past.
The present of the city is a very modern and active basis for the future of it.
The new buildings, the large boulevards, the modern parks, the elegant restaurants, hotels, and shops, represent an important part of Vienna.

But all these architectural, artistic or historic components signify the creation of the fantastic nation that lives here.
The Viennese are hospitable, friendly, clever, and have a good attitude across from the many tourists that visit this city.

Vienna is the heart of the country and the country is the heart of Europe.
The life, here, is a part of the life of the old continent.

For much imformation, you can visite my Vienna Home Page.

  • Durnstein from the Danube - Austria
    Durnstein from the Danube
    by Paul2001
I took a quick tour of Durnstein after my boattrip down the Danube River. It is a pretty town with a lovely Baroque church that dominates the town. The tower of the church is considered by some to be the finest Baroque structure in all of Austria. For my money, I prefer Melk but the tower is magnificent just the same. The ruined castle on the hill overlooking the town is supposedly where King Richard the Lion Hearted was held hostage by King Leopold of Austria. I sort of wish I had spent more time here and the town was quite charming.

  • Kastnersturm, Zell am See - Austria
    Kastnersturm, Zell am See
    by Paul2001,
    1 more photos
The Zell am See is one of the must see regions to visit if you are touring Austria. There is much to do and see here to keep you busy for several days. I primarly came here for the hiking and its access to the Krimml Falls, which can be visited by a short bus trip. The town itself is picturesquely located on a glacial lake surrounded by high mountains, some 3000 meters high. Although for me I visited Zell am See for its outdoors attractions, there are sights of a historical and artistic nature in the town itself. Zell am See dates from the 8th century and there is a 11th century church and a fine tower from that same time, the Kastnersturm. Zell am See also has an abundance of decent restaurants and some fun if touristy bars.

For me the highlight of the region around Zell am See is the wonderful hiking. There are so many trails that it is difficult just deciding where to go if your time is limited.

The area that would one day become Salzburg was settled by the Celts in about 15 B.C. The area is rich in salt, and the Celts established settlements in order to mine the mineral. In about 45 A.D., the settlement came under the Romans, who called it Juvavum.

Not much happened in the area until about 700 A.D. At that time, Saint Rupert chose the settlement as the site of a monastery and bishopric. He also renamed it Salzburg, which is German for "Salt Fortress." For the next 1,000 years, Salzburg was ruled by the archbishops of Salzburg, the leading ecclesiastics of the German-speaking world. During their reign, most of Salzburg's historic buildings were constructed.

In 1802, Salzburg was transferred to Bavaria, which ruled the area until 1816. At that time, Salzburg became part of the new nation of Austria as part of the terms of the Congress of Vienna.

During the Second World War, Salzburg became a part of the German Reich. It paid a heavy price, as about 40 percent of its buildings were destroyed during bombing raids. In the 1950s, tourism became one of the most important industries in the city. Tourists were attracted by the city's Old Town, which is among the best preserved city centers in Europe. In addition, Salzburg is the gateway to the Tyrolean Alps, one of the premier areas in Europe for winter sports. Among tourists today, Salzburg is famous as the birthplace of Mozart (1705) and where The Sound of Music was filmed (1964).

Nowadays, Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria, with about 150,270 inhabitants, and is the capital of Land Salzburg province.

    When you're ready for
    something other than beer...
    by pchamlis
Austria, like Germany, is a beer drinkers country. Sure, there's wine around, but it tends to be an afterthought at most small gasthofs and cafes. So, if you've been to the local cheese place, and you'd like some wine with your cheese, I'd suggest looking for one of the numerous small wine shops that can be found in any Austrian village.

Having some nice chilled white wine with our cheese and hard bread sandwiches one afternoon.

    Chocolate treats are
    everywhere in Austria!
    by pchamlis
ONE of the best things about Austria has to be the chocolate stores. Every town, no matter how large or small, has its share of places to buy quality Austrian candy and chocolate treats.

    You'll be like "a kid in a candy store". : )

The wonderful chocolates are among my fondest thoughts of Austria.

  • Cheese, please! A grocery store in Zell am See - Austria
    Cheese, please! A grocery
    store in Zell am See
    by pchamlis
The best place in any Austrian town, especially a ski village, to find snacks and cheap eats is the local grocery store. You can get reasonably priced cheese, bread, meats and even beer. If you want wine, you'll usually need more of a specialty shop.

But, if you'd like to have a snack and only spend a few Euros, hit the store.

Buying a loaf of crusty bread and some Emmenthaler cheese for an afternoon snack. (....we also slid by the wine store!)
