"I think Mike is totally gross." "Oh, totally." by DueSer, 4 more photos My absolute favorite thing about Vienna is the little unexpected things I came across while looking for something else. There are unique buildings, fountains, sculptures, even a bus terminal that, when I saw it, made me stop what I was doing so I could go over and take a picture because it was just so pretty and/or different. The bus station at Karlsplatz is spectacular. Just go see it for yourself. And the columns on this building in the picture here are so cool. I love the casual pose, like they're waiting for a ride or something. There were a lot of things I came across like that - just little surprises. The big buildings get all the attention but it's these little touches that make a city special and give it its own personality. I'm a big fan of just wandering around a new city and Wien is the perfect example of why it's so much fun. Plus, it's free. Leave a Comment

Haas-House by Hans Hollein by csordila The square of Stephansdom is opened up by the glass facade of the post-modern Haas-House designed by the star architect Hans Hollein. He used the principle: Medieval houses of the city were built on top of Roman ruins, modern houses were built on top of medieval ruins! The glass, steel and stone structure quotes the ancient Roman citadell Vindobona, the mirrored façade of which seems to mock Stephansdom, standing opposite. The House is an example of how old and new architecture can combine harmoniously.

by ealgisi Apfelstrudel is a traditional pastry of Austria and a popular dish in many countries that once belonged to the Austro-Hungarian empire. It is the most widely known kind of strudel. Well if you like sweet, don't miss that, you are inside the country who is really specialist in making that, in every way, so taste it, well the portions are usually pretty big, so enjoy it and lick your mustache :)

by ealgisi Well this is another specialty, that you don't have to miss. Sachertorte is a chocolate cake, invented by Franz Sacher in 1832 for Klemens Wenzel von Metternich in Vienna, Austria. It is one of the most famous Viennese culinary specialties. The trademark for the "Original Sachertorte" was registered by the Hotel Sacher, which was built in 1876 by the son of Franz Sacher. Nobody knows the real recipe because is well kept secret... You can imagine why. It consists of two layers of dense, not overly sweet chocolate cake with a thin layer of apricot jam in the middle and dark chocolate icing with shreds of chocolate on the top and sides. It is traditionally served with whipped cream without any sugar in it.

euromoney by WStat as to tipping in Austria: although there is no strikt rule on tipping, I would recommend to tip about 10 percent in restaurants, if service was acceptable; otherwise a polite "thank you" will also do. Hotel staff, taxis: in general 1 Euro will do for a good service, although especially in taxis tipping is generally not necessary. As snacks (to go with beer) Austrians like a kind of salted white radish ("Beer-Rettich"). A kind of creamy, red-pepper spiced curd ("Liptauer-cheese") is also a common and delicious snack, especially for cheese-lovers. Leave a Comment

St. Paul by lotharscheer Removing the Sim lock is in some countries legal (like Austria, usualy €10 in many fonshops, but might not be possible for some new, sophisticated fones), in others illegeal (like Germany). But you can try to do it by yourselfe: http://www.yesss.at/index.php?id=V54 You can buy a prepaid sim card in most countries, there is a ceiling of 59 cent per minute for EU simcards roaming inside the EU, but much more for calls outside EU. Lokal calls with Austrian prepaid sim card for around 7 cents (depending on Provider). Leave a Comment

Vienna is he capital of Austria, and the political and administrativ centre of the country. On a surface of 415 square kilometres lives a population of 1 600 000 people. The Danube Valley is an important part of Vienna’s natural scenery, but the low hills of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) also make a good combination with the large river. Vienna has a lot of parks and gardens with splendid flower combinations, clean and romantic alleyways, and a quietly atmosphere. All the stone constructions of the city make a good mixture with the green part of the region. The history of Vienna is very old, and it began to the Celts that made here the Celtic tribe named Vinid. The Romans arrived here around 15 BC, and built the camp Vindobona there. The ruins of the ancient fortress are to be seeing in the centre of the city, in front of the Imperial Palace, Hofburg. Now, Vienna contains 23 districts, but the many old constructions, with historical significance there are in the 1st district, named Innere Stadt. The city is like an open-air museum, with very important buildings. For the many tourists that come here, there are a lot of attractions here: The Imperial Palace Hofburg, home of many generations of Austrian Imperators, The Palace Belvedere, The Palace Schönbrunn, The Stephansdom, The Staatsopper, The Museums Quartier, The Kunsthistorisches and the Naturhistorisches Museum, And many other remains of the ancient history, there are in the old city. Vienna is also the capital of the music and its middle point. Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms, Haydn and many others, are very important names for all the lovers of the classical music. But Vienna is not a city that lives only in the past. The present of the city is a very modern and active basis for the future of it. The new buildings, the large boulevards, the modern parks, the elegant restaurants, hotels, and shops, represent an important part of Vienna. But all these architectural, artistic or historic components signify the creation of the fantastic nation that lives here. The Viennese are hospitable, friendly, clever, and have a good attitude across from the many tourists that visit this city. Vienna is the heart of the country and the country is the heart of Europe. The life, here, is a part of the life of the old continent. For much imformation, you can visite my Vienna Home Page. Leave a Comment
