Visit the village of Mondsee...

by BeverlyTyler

Visit the village of Mondsee and see the beautiful CHURCH WHERE THE WEDDING SCENE FOR THE SOUND OF MUSIC WAS FILMED. The church was built in 1487 and the Baroque alter inside was bilt in 1626 by Hans Waldburger. This is a lovely town to explore. It is peaceful and quiet with many wonderful shops and places to eat as well as interesting architecture and a fine view of the mountains and lake.

Travel to the Austrian lake...

by BeverlyTyler

Travel to the Austrian lake district to the secluded village of Hallstadt. THE VILLAGE OF HALLSTADT AND THE LAKE provide a picture-perfect setting where you can enjoy the unique architecture, the special churches, the restaurants along the lakes and in the village square, the almost unbelievably spectacular view of the lake and mountains and the wonderful hospitality of the people here.

ATTEND THE SOUND OF MUSIC...

ATTEND THE SOUND OF MUSIC PLAYERS DINNER THEATER IN SALZBURG. Here we watched a 10 minute film on the life of Maria Von Trapp, listened to the Sound of Music Singers perform, joined in on a number of the familiar songs, and watched while some of our group joined the singers and dancers including our tour leader Bishop Alex McCollough (center).

Visit the city of Salzburg. Here in August, 2000 we Walked Along the river between the old and new city; ENJOYED A BEER AT AN OUTDOOR RESTAURANT ON THE EDGE OF THE GARDEN OF MIRABELL-PALACE; bought lunch at an outdoor market; shopped in the many interesting stores in both the old and new city; visited the birthpace of Mozart and the extensive museum of his life and works; listened to the glockenspiel in the tower in Mozart square while enjoying apple strudel; enjoyed a guided tour of the city and cathedral; toured the church of the convent of Nonnberg where Maria Auguste v. Kutschera (later Von Trapp) was a novice; took a railway up to the fortress of Hohensalzburg; sat in an outdoor cafe enjoying coffee and pastries and watched the world go by; spend one evening at a dinner theater featuring the 'Sound of Music Singers,' who sang and performed with audience participation; and the next...

You must absolutely visit...

by kim83_50158

You must absolutely visit Salzburg! It is the one of the most wonderful cities in the world!! It is a very unique city. The Altstadt (old part of the city) has a certain charm. Anywhere you are in the city, you can look up and see the fortress almost right above. It is very amazing. The shopping is fun, too. The city is very artistic and full of music. It is Mozart's Hometown and the also the location where 'Sound of Music' was filmed, not to mention countless other movies. I also highly recommend Innsbruck...a little different from Salzburg, but has the same charm as Salzburg. The mountains in Austria are really very beautiful...and it is on a whole--very peaceful in the country. Austrians are very nice and hospitable--or at least the ones that my group met were. There are absolutely amazing views anywhere in this beautiful country!!

Grainne's General Tip

by Grainne

I very much liked the town we stayed in. It was called Feldkirch, and was just over the border from Switzerland. The difference was unbelievable...in prices, in friendliness...everything. We travelled on the cheap - stayed in the local youth hostel, which was a wonderful place, took local buses and trains, and shopped in the local supermarket. A great, if unorthodox, introduction to Austria! We were there for New Year's Eve, and the guy in charge of the youth hostel cooked a wonderful fondue, and we had a party with the other residents, a German family from Stuttgart, and a young bunch of skiers. One of the best 'Sylvesterabend' ever!

Stay at a small, Mom & Pop...

by diver-x

Stay at a small, Mom & Pop hotel. We found some places where retired folks had rooms for tourists in their homes. They had the BEST breakfasts! Don't let the language barrier hold you back if you don't know much German. All you need to know is: 'Haben zie zimmer frie?' and you'll know if they have a room available or not. You can use sign language for the rest! Anyway, most folks know just enough English to help out a tourist. Believe it or not, some of my fondest memories are of shopping for munchies at the wonderful grocery chain Julius Mienl. We'd find the yummiest cookies and bread and cheeses then chow down on the way to the next sight!
