by kucha

Find a favorite tea house and park yourself there in the afternoon with a pot of tea and wonderful Viennese pastry. There used to be a tea house on nearly every corner in Vienna. I would bring by study materials or the paper and spend late afternoon enjoying the atmosphere. You will not be kicked out for taking your time!

by kucha

Spend a Sunday afternoon in the hills outside of Vienna enjoying the many, charming wine houses -- or 'Heurigen.' There are many hundreds from which to choose and most are just north and west of the city. I think there was one at or nearby the home of Beethoven. Sit outside on a sunny day and enjoy the experience. After a light 'deli-style' meal and wine tasting, there are numerous beautiful walks to take in the nearby hills.

Vienna just oozes history!...

by stuffitinme

Vienna just oozes history! Wandering the Christmas market, staying at a Pensione that was over 200 years old, and visiting the palace grounds. Salzburg is beautiful - the surrounding mountains, and the Mozart museum are a must see. My fondest memory - well two of them - was visiting Zentralfriedhof in Vienna to see all of the composers - and the mountains at sunset in Salzburg - breathtaking!

Salzburg is the archetypical experience. The castle, the gardens, the FOOD and BEER, the old town. Positively outstanding. We camped in a campground overlooking the Danube under the spires of the cathedral in Melk. Serene beauty.

by Clarktr

Go skiing (snowboarding), I find that these activities are very well condoned in communities in Western Austria. Kaprun being one of my favorites. And any city in that area is very 'cozy'. My fondest memory would have to be standing near the peak of Grossglockner, and marveling in the beauty that is the Austrian Alps. And then drinkin' a lot of good beer afterwards, and having my friends, and myself get shot down left and right by beautiful Austrian girls, we were just sitting ducks for cruel letdowns.

by elizab

Visit Durnstein. It's in the Wachau on the Danube between Salzburg and Vienna (closer to Vienna). It is the location of the ruins of the castle where Richard the Lionhearted allegedly was held for ransom during the crusades. It is truly a fairytale village. If you take the steep path to the castle ruins and the top of the mountain, you will pass through a forest of knarled trees that you will swear are inhabited by gnomes and elves. The villagers are very friendly and it is touristed primarily by Viennese.Lermoos is a quaint ski village in the Alps which is barely vistited in the warmer months. A shame. The hiking is wonderful and the scenery breathtaking.

by kywildcat

Get on one of the highest mountains and look down. It's a total rush! As a child when visiting granny, I used to watch the helicopters fly up there looking for missing or wounded rock climbers. It's very dangerous to go out on your own, but if you're really into it you can go with a group of experienced rock climbers or just go up there and take a peak down into Mallnitz and it's surroundings. It's absolutely gorgeous! Austria has THE best food and the people are absolutely great! The hotels are very unique and their restaurants as well. There's a lot of woodwork and carvings and it's very romantic. You can eat by candlelight and check out their woodcarvings on the walls and beams in awe!

Taitsu's General Tip

by Taitsu

Alpbachtal has something like 42km of slopes and a great variety of slopes depending on the skills of the person skiing. The great thing about this resort is, that according to those who have been there often, it hardly never gets so busy that you have to wait for the ski lifts longer than 15 min, which is obviously important if you want to make the most of the sunny slopes ;)
