Salzburg was good, Innsbruck...

by Beefy_SAFC

Salzburg was good, Innsbruck was okay, but the real highlight for me was the mountain scenery. My favourite place was a toss up between Hintersteinersee and Grossglockner glacier - the latter about the only time in Austria when I felt the air was noticably on the thin side - a portent of things to come, because only a short time after, I was on the way to Tibet. Funnies time again...Only one of note. If you've been up on the mountain walks, you'll know what I mean by 'Tinkerbell Cows hiding in the fog'.* Picture: Grossglockner.Beefy at http://www.geocities.com/beefnetuk

by MVP

(When visiting Obertraun that is) ... spend some time at the Strandbad.Literally it means 'beach bathing area' and although the bathing applies, the 'beach' consists of the large green you see on the picture. But it's main function is more of a social nature. This is the meeting place for visitors to mingle with the locals. There is a small open-air café where you can enjoy refreshments, a light snack, delicious soft ice cream (my favourite !) and above all the breathtaking landscape you are presented with at the top of this page.As it is in open-air, opening hours depend on the weather. Only 'Wanns sche is'. Landlady 'Resi' (Theresia) Held or daughter Doris will gladly explain to you what this means. Or just visit the Strandbad website. If you happen to pass through Obertraun in the last week of any May, the first week of any June or at the end of any August, you are very likely to find...

Meet Local HeroesAs I said, good skiers are found all over the country, but the best are grown in Flachau! This town in Salzburg province is well proud of its son Hermann Maier - they've even got his museum there. Needless to say, everybody's free to try Hermann's home slopes.

Visit CarinthiaLet's start the tour in the South. Carinthia (Kaernten) is the region of wonderful lakes which can be counted in dozens. Wortersee near Klagenfurt is perhaps the best known one. This photo, however, is of Millstattersee near Spittal. Its pristine surroundings will melt the hardest of souls and soothe the most stressed-out nerves. If you've forgotten how silence sounds, this is the place to experience it.If you prefer a different kind of sound, drive a bit up the road and visit the Porsche Museum. See, the area caters for any kind of ears!

by oja

Let's get this sorted straight away: Austria stretches much further than Vienna and Salzburg. These are superb places, but not the be-all and end-all. Austria is rich with small scenic towns (often so small that you blink and eye and miss them) and has to be savoured slowly. (Well OK, each place has to be savoured slowly to be honest!) So: you must take time! Sitting at the balcony of my friend lotharlerch in his house near Innsbruck and chatting the evenings away. And of course, being guided around Tirol. He's the best guide of the area you'll ever find.

evebeals's General Tip

by evebeals

Though my previous visit was short, it was well worth taking the ride up to the AlpenZoo in Innsbruck, since the small zoo really gave the feeling of seeing these Alpine animals (otters, lynxes, wolves, mountain goats) in their natural habitat, and is a nice way to experience the Alps when you don't have the time for extensive hiking or exploring.

by daBertl

You absolutely must - stay there for a year since activities are certainly not limited to one particular season!A wonderful time to visit though would most certainly be September. If you are lucky however, since sometimes it can be really cool at this time of the year. On the other hand, when you are lucky, like I was a few years ago, you can have the most amazing trip ever. You start, of course, in the Capital Vienna and spend a few days there exploring one of the most beautiful cities of the world with all its history and traditions and then make your way down to the state of Burgenland (that's where it's really flat). In Burgenland you must visit a wine farm and you will get the best wine you ever drank in your entire life. Just ask me why it's not as famous as like French or Italian wine. Easy answer, Austria is small and farmers can not produce as much wine as they could easily sell...

Like the rivers, the lakes in Austria abound, the Attersee Lake was one of the most crowded we saw, but it did little to detract from the surrounding scenes. This was the view from our guesthouse room.

Gmunden

by steventilly

Gmunden is a rather smart and self confident town on the lake Traunsee in the Salzkammergut region. It is famous for it's pottery - you can buy Gmundenware throughout Austria, and there is a pottery museum here and you can also take a tour of the factory. The building in this picture (the Rathaus) has a Carillon made up of ceramic bells, but strangely they are not made in Gmunden, but are Meissen china. It is sure a beautiful sound when this Carillon plays.

by steventilly

Salzburg is another of the 'must see' cities of Austria, and it certainly is a nice place. It will be especially magical for all those who love 'The Sound Of Music' and/or Mozart - which unfortunately does not include me. There are many refernces to both of these throughout the city, and any guided tour is dotted with anecdotes about them. Most of these (and especially the Sound Of Music ones) were just lost on me.
