Vienna

by steventilly

Well when in Austria I guess you simply must visit Vienna. This is a picture of St Stephens Cathedral, Vienna. We have visited many large cities, and several Capitals, but Vienna struck us more than most with the sheer 'grandness' of it's buildings. There are areas like that in other cities, but the whole of Vienna seemed to be mightily impressive.

by steventilly

Innsbruck, the capital of the Tirol region is beautiful historic city. It's small enough to make it a day-trip destination if all you want to see is the city, but there is so much surrounding Innsbruck too that you could easily spend longer here. This is the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof), probably Innsbruck's most famous sight. What we loved about Innsbruck was the ancient streets of the Aldstadt, crammed with cafes and bars, and the galleried shops that stood back from the streets. The atmosphere around the city was just so laid back, much less hectic than in Salzburg and Vienna.

Village By A Lake

by steventilly

Another contender for 'most picturesque village in Austria' is Hallstatt. Like Traunkirchen it is sited below the hills on the side of a lake, in this case the Hallstattersee. It is an easy train journey away from Traunkirchen, but the fact that it has so many hotels, gasthoffs, B&B, apartments, campsites, etc of it's own means that it's a great place to actually base yourself for a holiday in this area.Again, see the upcoming travelogue for more details.

by steventilly

Zell Am Zee is another nice lakeside resort. It's not so plush as Kitzbuhel but it's still very nice, and has the added bonus of being right next to a good sized lake. This lake is surrounded by strandbads and hotels and there are some good mountain destinations close by too. The town centre is quite small and there are one or two historic buildings, including this, the parish church.

by steventilly

Bad Ischl is one of Austria's most famous spa towns, made famous by its patron Emperor Franz Josef I. It has some interesting attractions, some good shops, cafes etc, a riverside promenade and an excellent annual summer festival (whic we visited - see travelogue). There is also a fantastic Konditorei here - Zauner (see elsewhere).

by steventilly

Melk is a small town standing on the Danbue in the wine region near Vienna. We took a short coach tour in this area, just to get a flavour of what it has to offer. It really was a lovely area and one day we will return here just to visit this region. At Melk we had a short look around the abbey, which is truly huge, and totally dominates the town!

by steventilly

Kitzbuhel in the Tirol region is just about as plush a resort as you will find. It is crammed with lovely shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and top class hotels, but it keeps a friendly air about it and is certainly not snobbish. There are also some real old buildings in Kitzbuhel, some dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. At one end of the town these two churches stand side by side.

Tip Photo
Gmunden

by steventilly

Gmunden was a really lovely place. In addition to its nice shops and cafes it has a long, long lakeside promenade at one end of which is a strandbad (bathing area) and at the other end is Schloss Orth, a castle that stands out in the lake. From Gmunden you can take boat trips around the lake and as far as Traunkirchen, mentioned above, and Ebensee at the other end of the lake. These steamers also stop off at some remote lakeside gasthoffs where you can just relax, have a cake and wait for the next boat. On Sunday the historic steam ship Gisela operates, and this is a real nice way to see the lake.

by steventilly

The village of Traunkirchen in the Salzkammergut region is one of the most picturesque villages in Austria (though admittedly there are MANY picuresque villages in Austria). It sits by the shore of lake Traunsee, and a small chapel stands on a promentory jutting out into the lake. The village is very small, with 2 hotels, a couple of Gasthoffs and one cafe. Nightlife is almost non existent, but if you long for peace and tranquility in a beautiful setting then this is a nice place. By day it's easy to travel out of Traunkirchen on the railway or lake steamers, though these both stop running relatively early in the evening.See the forthcoming travelogue for more information.

Go to a place called...

by Boru

Go to a place called FrankenFells, it's a small town but it's the most beautiful place I've ever been to. It's quiet, very scenic, it's got the green and the waterfalls, the kind of place you dream of finding. It's clean fresh and the lakes are spectacular. My fondest memory would probably be the summer festival's which go on every Wednesday and Saturday and the bar stays open until the last person leaves, which of course was us Irish Lads. In the winter their was the snow and you can emagine what we got up to, a lot of skiing and snowball fighting.
