Pre Paid Sim Cards

by lotharscheer

Removing the Sim lock is in some countries legal (like Austria, usualy €10 in many fonshops, but might not be possible for some new, sophisticated fones), in others illegeal (like Germany). But you can try to do it by yourselfe:http://www.yesss.at/index.php?id=V54You can buy a prepaid sim card in most countries, there is a ceiling of 59 cent per minute for EU simcards roaming inside the EU, but much more for calls outside EU. Lokal calls with Austrian prepaid sim card for around 7 cents (depending on Provider).

Vienna, the capital of Austria

by Fam.Rauca

Vienna is he capital of Austria, and the political and administrativ centre of the country. On a surface of 415 square kilometres lives a population of 1 600 000 people. The Danube Valley is an important part of Vienna’s natural scenery, but the low hills of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) also make a good combination with the large river.Vienna has a lot of parks and gardens with splendid flower combinations, clean and romantic alleyways, and a quietly atmosphere. All the stone constructions of the city make a good mixture with the green part of the region. The history of Vienna is very old, and it began to the Celts that made here the Celtic tribe named Vinid. The Romans arrived here around 15 BC, and built the camp Vindobona there. The ruins of the ancient fortress are to be seeing in the centre of the city, in front of the Imperial Palace, Hofburg. Now, Vienna contains 23 districts, but the...

Salzburg

by traveldave

The area that would one day become Salzburg was settled by the Celts in about 15 B.C. The area is rich in salt, and the Celts established settlements in order to mine the mineral. In about 45 A.D., the settlement came under the Romans, who called it Juvavum. Not much happened in the area until about 700 A.D. At that time, Saint Rupert chose the settlement as the site of a monastery and bishopric. He also renamed it Salzburg, which is German for "Salt Fortress." For the next 1,000 years, Salzburg was ruled by the archbishops of Salzburg, the leading ecclesiastics of the German-speaking world. During their reign, most of Salzburg's historic buildings were constructed. In 1802, Salzburg was transferred to Bavaria, which ruled the area until 1816. At that time, Salzburg became part of the new nation of Austria as part of the terms of the Congress of Vienna.During the Second World War,...

ATM - Cheat Sheet

by irvbur

Although ATM machines are to be found all over, the transaction is always in local currency. BE PREPARED. For example, do not go up to an ATM and think you'd like to withdraw $500 worth of local currency. You first must know the amount in local currency that $500 will buy. I always carry a currency cheat sheet when travelling. In addition to ATM transactions, it's also easier to bargain and make purchases. For a cheat sheet go to to http://www.oanda.com/cgi/convert/cheatsheet

Austrian Beer

by morgenhund

One of the many things that has helped ensure that I stay in Austria for an extended period of time has been Austrian beer. Curiously it is not exported - apart from Zipfer which has become a fashionable beer in the UK. This of course means that there is more of the fine nectar to enjoy in Austria:Obviously taste is a personal thing but I would recommend the following beers - all often available at supermarkets and bars at reasonable prices.Wieselburger (with a distinctive wire cap)MurauerGösserKapsreiterOttakringerVillacherHubertusStieglReininghausZipferHirterOthers that you may come across (which I personally don't quaff)SchwechaterPuntigamerGambrinus (only in cans!)Other more obscure Austrian beersPieschingerTrumerEggenbergerProst! There is nothing finer than enjoying a cold beer freshly poured from the tap sat by a lake watching the sun go down, or sat up a mountain surrounded by...
