Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna.- Schönbrunn, the building of which was begun by the princes of the House of Austria, was the object of Maria-Theresia's particular affection. It was she who completed it, and, in order to accelerate the work, part of it was done by torchlight. The castle is delightfully situated on the right bank of the Wien.

Salzburg is my favorite place-it has everything-the river a castle a palace good food great shopping and great photo ops. I lived in Germany a while back and when I down to Salzburg fior the day I always stopped for KFC cause there was no 'fast food ' where I lived and even though the Austrian food is fantastic- one yearns for the familiar!
Take a ride along Höhenstrasse to Kahlenberg. Enjoy the views of Vienna all way long and finally from the terrace of Kahlenberg Restaurant. (Avoid the restaurant!) Drive on to Leopoldsberg which gives you an additional view of Klosterneuburg, and has a decent restaurant. If you can wait, preferably stop off at Häuserl am Stoan on your way back. Overwhelming variety of magnificent mountain scenery.

My travel orders were to go through Austria by train, wearing civilian clothes while in Austria.I had one stop in Austria, where I had to change trains. As I was waiting in the Austrian train station, a man with a cane and a neatly trimmed white beard began shouting at me in German. He was pointing his cane at the 'U.S. Army' stenciled on my duffel bag. I smiled at him and tried to explain in my very limited German that I was just passing through on my way to Germany. I don't know whether that man was a Nazi, a Communist, or a fiercely patriotic Austrian citizen still ready to fight any foreign soldier who dared to invade his homeland.

If you're a ski fan, go try the slopes. Austria has the most mountains in Europe so try to imagine their slopes. The view at the lake in Zell-Am-See. It's a shame the pics can only catch the view and not the feeling.
