by Grete

As a kid, we used to go skiing in the Alps at Easter time. We went to Schladming - wich was great for kids and adults. Skiis were rented and the rusty skills were soon history.Competing with eachother downhill was really loads of fun. This is my fondest memory. I hope to come back in adult life - BUT THE WORLD IS TOO BIG ! SO MUCH TOO DO AND PLACES TO SEE AND SO LITTLE TIME !! - Sigh!

gema's General Tip

A weekend in Kitzbühel/ Tirol!!Okay, I admit it. Sometimes I have a lucky hand and so I won a weekend in Kitzbühel for two persons. :-))Unfortunately at first there wasn´t enough snow to ski and then there was far too much (see picture)and far too stormy to have skiing fun.It was ok, because we didn´t need to pay for it. ;-))Also we had sauna and a swimmingpool in the hotel, and besides the main theme in Kitzbühel seems to be: party, party, party...The pubs are quite crowded even it was low season at this time and for some strange reason they only sell beer in 0.3 or 0.2 glasses (But I am usually thirsty!! ).

Where I came from is probably...

by Tenzin

Where I came from is probably the world's most open economy i.e. Singapore. We've got no choice but to trade and hence I've come to believe that any country that doesn't sell anything to us or through us can't be rich. Until I come across Austria, that is. A country so achingly beautiful that it probably can survive, nay prosper on tourism alone. Tourism is about the only industry where you earn foreign exchange just by sitting there; literally. No wonder I hardly see any Austrian good in Singapore, they don't need to! People just go there to spend money without them having to sell anything across their border. I've been to Vienna twice and can't wait to go there again. In a different season perhaps. I just can't recall where I took this photo. The interior of this church was refreshing cooler than the summer heat outside and WOW what majesty indeed! No 2-D photo is ever going to do...

by Luis_Alberto

There's quite a lot to see in this beautiful country. Depending on what one's fancies are?. The museums of Vienna are quite a site. There's beautiful Salzburg, always an ideal place to visit, anytime of the year. I have been in Vienna and Salzburg twice, and I still have not seen enough of these places. You can also enjoy the Danube river with all kind of activities, where the Viennese really have lots of fun! People from all over the world, come to visit this picturesque and fairytale country. The city of Vienna, so majestic and impossing. Where it still seems that emperor Josef will come around the corner with his entourage. I will always remember when I heard the waltz music in the park, It was a beautiful spring evening and the city started to come alive.

by Shar

Go to a small town called Grunau. There is a great **** hostel (yes four star) there called the Treehouse. Its only 1 hour from Salzburg via Wels. The train trip is beautful too as you go through the snowy fields (or green in the summer I suppose) and head towards the looming mountains. The hostel is only a 3 minute walk to the slopes where you'll find easily the cheapest lift passes in the world (ha well from what I've seen anyway!!). You don't have to worry about ski gear, the hostel lends it to you. Though its always hard to drag yourself away from the cosy TV room to face the cold. The hosts are so friendly (yes I used to work there) you'd swear you were staying over at a mates house. When travelling throughout Europe this was my European home. They don't need to adverise as word of mouth keeps them busy. Once you've come you'll never want to leave and if you do it won't be long before...

Visit the castle in Salzburg,...

by CMC007

Visit the castle in Salzburg, preferably walking to it from another hill or taking the tram up from town. Walking is great, as you hear bits of Mozart's music wafting up the hill from various locations in the town. For those of you who love to drive, the Grössglockner Road in western Austria (near Zell am See) is a wonderful route full of switchbacks, beautiful scenery and a giant glacier. From one of the peaks along the road (there's a marked turnoff to a gift shop and viewing tower), you can see about 7 of the other higher peaks in the Alps. I love high-performance cars and had an absolutely fantastic drive here (some of the BMW ads on TV showing the cars on mountain switchbacks are filmed on this road). The Grössglockner drive was absolutely wonderful, but dinner at the castle in Salzburg ranks right up there, too.

Salzburg: You must wander up...

by DesertRat

Salzburg: You must wander up the steps to the old monestery on the Kapuzinerberg at night and sit on the benches along the old defensive wall to gaze at the spotlighted Old Town below -- best done with a 'significant other'. It's got to be one of the most romantic spots in Europe. Evenings spent with friends listening to Schrammlmusik in a tavern; the strains of Mozart drifting out of the windows of the Mozarteum conservatory, etc., etc., etc.
