Hiking in the Austrian Alps

by Paul2001

The Austrian Alps are stunning and offer great hiking opportunities. The paths are well marked and numbered so you will not get lost. Each path is rated on its level of difficulty so as hikers will not get "over there head". They range from easy to strenuous. I have included pictures taken while hiking in the Austrian Alps in a travelogue section.

Mariazell

by KiNyA

Almost in the middle of nowhere, where leed you winding routs, or better told, on the north of the Styer Landscape, lies a little town called Mariazell. And why is it so special? Because it's the Austrian place of pilgrimage. I was surprised of church expanse (how did they build it?!) and huge pipe organ inside. Otherwise the town of Mariazell is very picturesque. Worth of seeing!

Babbling Brooks and Rivers

by Carnation

Rare and Beautiful PlantsHopefully this natural beauty will prevail if hikers continue to merely admire the flowers around without plucking them as these plants often need two decades to develop completely. And they suffer a lot from deteriorating environmental conditions already.

Alpines and Caves

by Carnation

Ski Pistes and CavesA mountain of thousand alpine flowers. Hiking on the rugged plateau is especially attractive for the colourful sea of alpine flowers blossoming on rocks and meadows. While the Feuerkogel shows some signs of interference with the landscape due to winter sports, only a few meters off the ski pistes, you can see mother nature presenting herself in full glory. From Alberfeldkogel with a terrace on the top, you can see the lakes Vorderer Langbathsee and Traunsee. The view into Salzkammergut valleys is just stunning. The whole mountain is dotted by caves, some deep down inside which have not yet been explored much.

Mountains and Glaciers

by Carnation

WaterfallsIn former times the karstic plateau of the mountains between the lakes Traunsee and Attersee was not really considered very inviting. Otherwise people would not have named them Hoellengebirge ('Hell Mountains'), Hoellkogel or Totengraben ('Valley of Death'). Today the Hoellengebirge is an attractive hiking area which reminds me of paradise rather than hell. The Grosser Hoellkogel, highest point of the massif, is a fantastic vantage point. There is a great view of the Boehmerwald in the upper Muehlviertel region to the Dachstein glaciers and of the Traunstein to the Hohe Tauern.

... history...

by alirom

The Alpine lands and the fertile plains of the Danube Region were settled in prehistoric times. The existence of rich mineral resources - most notably salt and iron - gave rise to a prosperous Celtic culture which established itself as a major trading partner of the neighbouring Roman territories during the first century BC. Around the birth of Christ this region, known as the kingdom of Noricum, was conquered and subsequently incorporated in the conglomerate Roman Empire and became a Roman province - along with Rhaetia (western Austria), which the Romans subdued at the same time, and Pannonia (western Lower Austria and Burgenland). The Romans held sway in the Danube region for almost five hundred years. When they finally gave way to the onslaught of the tribal migrations and withdrew from the Danube, they left behind them several once-thriving cities.

Schonbrunn Palace

by Sharrie

Visit SCHONBRUNN PALACE, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs. The palace was built by Austrian architect J. B. Fischer von Erlach modelling after Versailles. The palace contain 1441 rooms. This delightful palace is one of Habsburgs' favorites and the Apartments of Franz-Joseph and Sissi are opened to the public for viewing. The Porcelain Salon and the Vieux-Lacque-Zimmer where rooms were filled with Chinese prints, porcelain and exotic screens are particularly interesting. Official Site: www.schoenbrunn.at/eng/schloss/main.html

Tip Photo
Hofburg

by Sharrie

Proceed to HOFBURG (the Imperial Palace) State Apartments & visit its TREASURY: where Franz-Joseph I and Empress Elizabeth (the very beautiful and noble Sissi) once resided. A visit to the Treasury (at least 3 hours are required in order to see most of the display) leave a lasting impression. The insignia of the Holy Roman Empire and the 8th-century Holy Lance, Scepter of Austria are all kept here. An eye-opener for me!

St. Stephen's Cathedral

by Sharrie

Start your exploration of Vienna from ST. STEPHEN'S CATHEDRAL (STEPHANSDOM): Vienna is a very pleasant city to walk in. Pick up a city map from the concierge and you can hop onto its public transport and start experiencing the wonder of Vienna. The cathedral is in the city centre and can be reached by bus as well as the subway (Stephansplatz). To know more about Stephansdom, proceed to www.austria.org/jun97/stephen.htm Strolling around Stephansplatz and enjoying its architecture are very pleasant during Summer. This city is full of remarkably beautiful sights and music is everywhere. Vienna has concerts every night!
