  • Burning the schnapps - Austria
    Burning the schnapps
    by nhcram
The schnapps burning is a local tradition normally carried out on 26th December. You have a quarter pint of schnapps (or more if you want!) and a load of sugar cubes. The waitress sets the schnapps alight and then you have to melt the sugar cubes over the schnapps using forks. It takes quite a long time but it was worth the wait. The schnapps now has a syrupy texture and is much sweeter.
I am not sure if all places do this but we were lucky to find one that did just outside Bad Goisern

    Singender Wirt!

Der singender Wirt also plays Alphorn. This man has two hotels int he Montafon valley in the town of Tschagguns he owns Sporthotel Sonne and in Parthenen Hubertusklause: His nam Hubert Schöpf. On certain days he treats his guests on the local Austrian tones of the Alphorn.

He sings for them on the "Heimatabende". All kind of typical Austrian music and ofcourse "jodeln".

Sights in Böckstein>: Our favorite Maria zum Guten Rat Pilgrimage Church (constructed from 1764 - 67, the most important early Classical work in the SalzburgerLand). In this beautiful church the domed ceilings has frescoes depicting group of miners. Altböckstein Montane Museum and the Altböckstein Montane Settlement (Medieval mining community).
The 14th century Paris Church in Dorfgastein has been partly remodeled in Baroque style. The Pfarfkirche in Bad Hofgastein is late Gothic Parish Church dating from the late 15th century, but it has a fine Baroque altar.
Mystery Church near Klammstein (in the natural cave, see the Gastein Valley above). It is one of the most important caves of Hohe Tauern and the largest of the Salzburger Central Alps (guided tours Tue – Sun 100 ATS).

The Lederhosen to many people is a special sign of their Alpine citizenship and a proof of their cultural heritage. Owing a pair of Lederhosen still is a sentimental tradition of descendants of Austrians throughout the entire world. In the Alps people wear the Lederhosen for special occasions like 'Oktoberfest', 'Sonnwendfeier' and 'Kirtag' (Kirchtag).

The wood sculpture is a traditionally local custom in St.Wolfgang.
The many creations are to buy direct in the atelier Marbler, 3 kilometres from St.Wolfgang away.
