Blow the Alphorn!

by Roeffie

Der singender Wirt also plays Alphorn. This man has two hotels int he Montafon valley in the town of Tschagguns he owns Sporthotel Sonne and in Parthenen Hubertusklause: His nam Hubert Schöpf. On certain days he treats his guests on the local Austrian tones of the Alphorn. He sings for them on the "Heimatabende". All kind of typical Austrian music and ofcourse "jodeln".

mysterious blankets, windows.

by chaistarr

blankets are often wrapped in a cover- kind of like a pillow comes in a case, the blanket comes in a puch. I still dont know how you use it properly- sometines i crawled in like a bug, snug in my pouch and other times i just put pouch and blanket ontop of me.and windows are opened- even in winter but just for a short bit. cold air isnt feared- its a cure for the common cold!

greetings

by chaistarr

Austrians are very friendly. However many dont wish to speak English...but I bet they know some English! It surprising how little of German you need though, to function. Use the universal smile and wave! Also, the typical hello that even strangers give is "gruss gott"

Climate

by keeweechic

Temperatures depend largely on altitude, with averages 5C lower for each additional 300m of elevation. The long-term average maximum and minimum temperatures of Salzburg (435 m) are 1/-5C in January, 15/5C in April, 25/15C in July, 14/5C in October. Summers can be hot, with temperatures occasionally reaching 37C, summer evenings are usually cool. April and November the wettest periods.

Grüß Gott !

by MVP

The complexity of greeting one another.Don't be surprised to be greeted in this way when you meet someone on the street. A much regarded custom, it is considered highly impolite when you don't return this greeting with a 'Grüß Gott !' yourself. Whether you actually believe in god or not is of no importance. However, it doesn't stay that simple. It is up to the 'younger' person to greet first. So when you spot someone approaching you, decide if he or she at least looks older than you and beat him/her to it.Then, if you have been greeted by a young person or a child your answer should be 'Grüß dich'. And if you happen to know the ‘opponent' you can say ‘Servus' (originally Latin, meaning Your Servant).Do try to get the hang of it!

Banks

by keeweechic

Banks are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Exchange offices at airports and major city rail terminals are open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., in Vienna to 10:00 p.m., in resort areas a few hours each day seven days a week..

by Rhondaj

Shopping: I wish there was a shopping category because I don't know where to put this tip. Anyway, if shopping for SWAROVSKI CRYSTAL, don't bother with their main store in the old city. The sales persons there are rather snotty. A few doors down at a shop called GESHENKSLAUB'N, a very kind woman by the name of Ursula assisted me. She gave me a great product catalogue to take home to the states. (not some little flyer) Ursula said that Swarovski sets prices for their pieces and no matter what store you shop in the prices will be the same. (I kept my eye out for that afterwards and it seemed true.)

by Rhondaj

If you are a music fan, don't forget to drop into a music store and buy some CD's you won't find back home. I am a pop music fan, so when in Austria I picked up two CD's. One by a female artist: KOSHEEN and one by a group called BRO'SIS. Perhaps an Austrian can tell me if they are still popular?

Sights in Böckstein>: Our favorite Maria zum Guten Rat Pilgrimage Church (constructed from 1764 - 67, the most important early Classical work in the SalzburgerLand). In this beautiful church the domed ceilings has frescoes depicting group of miners. Altböckstein Montane Museum and the Altböckstein Montane Settlement (Medieval mining community). The 14th century Paris Church in Dorfgastein has been partly remodeled in Baroque style. The Pfarfkirche in Bad Hofgastein is late Gothic Parish Church dating from the late 15th century, but it has a fine Baroque altar.Mystery Church near Klammstein (in the natural cave, see the Gastein Valley above). It is one of the most important caves of Hohe Tauern and the largest of the Salzburger Central Alps (guided tours Tue – Sun 100 ATS).

by UKbrit

I think that one of the best things about Austria is the drinking age. It is only 16 I think and I reckon that is really great. Also try their ice creams out there as they are lovely. Nice and large woth plenty of fruit and sauce. Also, you can greet people in areas like the Tirol with local phrases such as Grussgot. This goes down well with some of the locals as it is better than a bog standard Hallo.
