Austrian are very nice. But they are extremely neat and like to sort trash in al sorts of ways. They hate it if you don't sort your trash at campgrounds. Do you see how clean the road in this village is?
Although many Austrians speak English, a few words of German mnake a world of difference. And I cannot emphasize enough two things - Austrians ARE NOT GERMANS and they are very conscious of their past - the empire and all that.
1. Austrians are neatniks. If you stay in an Austrian home, make sure to pick up after yourself. 2. Water is expensive in Austria, so be nice to your hosts and don't take long showers. 3. Service is generally not included in your bill, so you should tip. I tipped 10%, which seemed to be ok.Something else I found interesting: In Austria, you never have to bus your own table, even in fast food restaurants. They have an employee to do it for you.

The official language of Austria is German, but with certain local peculiarities. While Germans will greet you with 'Guten Tag', Austrians will say 'Gruss Gott' or simply 'Gott'. A simple detail to remember surely makes a big impression.
Walking area often have booklets of the mountain huts in which you can insert their stamp when you arrived there on a hike. These stamps are worth so many points according to distance and height travelled and can be accumulated to gain a walking medal - I found it an incentive when I was faced with a steep climb , to the hut at the top! This is certainly the case in Ellmau where I managed a silver medal in one week. I think in Kitzbuhel you have to go on a hike with the guide from the tourist board. This is not my style - I like to go at my own pace and stop (often!) when I get out of breath.
I do have some rules. If I post a place, I've been there!! If I recommend a hotel, I know that hotel!! AND I only put 'I will be there' next to places I am going SOON. No dreaming -- this is my real life! I rate exactly as I see it. So, yes I've actually given a 'not very helpful' rating though only once or twice-- yet otherwise this is just a game for people.I love this site but do not want to abuse it. your friend in Travel. -- Greg
