The Erzberg consists completely of iron and the Iron is won simply by taking the rocks down from the mountains . That way the mountain consists today of many terraces - it is a special sort of desert within Austria - you might try to take a walk - but it is forbidden - and it still is an active mine and big trucks take down the iron and do not have time to concentrate on hikers. The Vogtturm is folklore museum located in an interesting old tower that is part of the 16th century Rathaus of Zell-em-see. The tower actually was built long before the rest of the building and dates from the 9th century. Inside the museum, there is the usual array of costumes, decorative and popular artifacts that comes along with "folklore" museums. I was a little spent on such pieces by this time in my trip and found that most of it was unmemorable. Leave a Comment

The area around Salzburg contains vast salt deposits which have been mined for hundreds of years, and the city was named after its most important commodity (salz is German for "salt"). An interesting and fun side trip involves a visit to the Durnberg Salt Mines. At the entrance, men and women are directed to seperate changing rooms where they put on overalls for the descent into to the mine. An electric mine train takes visitors deep into the heart of the mountain. Once inside, the tour proceeds on foot, although when visitors descend to different levels, they slide down long, polished wooden slides. The mine shafts have been carved into solid salt, and there is a large salt lake deep inside the mine. On top, there is a museum which has informative exhibits that explain the history of salt mining over the centuries. Leave a Comment

The Gardens of Upper Belvedere are worth to have a walk through and enjoy the lovely nature and art of man! rather do it in a summer day as fountains are working, but you can't have all the wonders in the same time, I mean Christmas could never be in the summer right LOL Leave a Comment

The Maria Saal is a seemingly ancient pilgrimage church located a few miles north of Klagenfurt. The original church was built in the 8th century and incorporated old Roman tombstones in the construction. The carving pictured here on the south facade of the building is an excellent example of one of these tombstones. It is suppose to portray a Roman postal wagon. The church was rebuilt in the 14th century. It is surrounded by fortified walls which were used to defend the church against maurading Magyars and Turks. The interior of the church has the usual Gothic religious relics but is most famous for a 1425 image of the Virgin Mary. Leave a Comment
