Kaprun: Vötter's Fahrzeugmuseum

by globetrott

Vötter's Fahrzeugmuseum Kaprun is a great place to visit, when you like museums with lots of old vintagecars. This museum is inside the hotel Sport-Kristall in Kaprun & that is just a few km from Zell am See. The museum shows about 150 cars and lots of bikes and mopeds. Even the smallest space of the museum-halls is crammed with cars. You will find a lot of cars that you might remember from a long time ago, and most of them are are not "shining" like in other museums, but they rather look like to be in a private garage, waiting to be repaired or so.I really enjoyed this place, it is just a pity that some of the most precious cars you almost cannot take a photo of, because they are hidden behind many other cars. The museum is open daily10.00am - 06.00pmIt is not easy to find this museum, except that you drive through the village of Kaprun in direction to the castle and stop at the Hotel...

Kaprun: dont miss the Sigmundklamm

by globetrott

This is an interesting hike in the area around of Zell am see and Kaprun: Sigmund-Klamm !It is an easy walk and you have to pay some small entrance-fee before you will be able to walk over and along a fresh mountain-stream making its way through the rocks. At the end of the Sigmund-Klamm you can decide, whether you go back all the way that you came through the Klamm or you might take another path through the woods as well. The total walkingtime from the carpark through the Klamm and back will be around 1,5 hours. Sigmundklamm is open for visitors:from end of May till end of Septemberdaily from 09.00am-05.0pmentrancefee was 3,30 euros in 2009

Zell am See: The Hundertwasser - Brunnen

by globetrott

This is something that might be of some interest for all fans of friedensreich Hundertwasser, the famous austrian painter & architect: Hundertwasser's Austria-fountainin Zell am SeeYou will find it inside the area of the Grand-Hotel, next to the lake. It looks quite interesting and colorfull like all works by F. Hundertwasser and it is accessible all day and night. The water is pumped to the very top and will finally flow down in these stonebridges, thats all.-------HOW TO GET TO ZELL am SEE--------It is quite easy to get to Zell am See by train and the trainstation is also right in the middle of the village and just a few meters from the lake, the Zeller See. You will find some lockers for your luggage at this station and you can change there as well to the narrow-gauge trains of Pinzgauerbahn that takes you to Krimmler Wasserfaelle, the highest waterfalls of Austria. For the timetables...

Schwarzsee - a warm, healthy lake in Tirol

by globetrott

When you are searching for a great place to relax with your whole family, while you are on vacation in Tirol, I can highly recommend this lake, that is warmer than other lakes in that area, because there is healthy moore on its ground:Schwarzsee is in the outskirts of Kitzbühel, east of the town, in a drivingtime of just a few minutes from the centre of town and the local bus is going there as well. There are two restaurants, a large carparking and also a swimming-area with a wonderful park and various hiking-paths around the lake. From Schwarzsee you will have an excellent view of the surrounding mountains like the area of Wilder Kaiser (my 4th pic) and Kitzbühler Horn in my last picture.

Stams - a great monastery

by globetrott

The baroque monastery of Stams is another great stop-over, when you are driving along the highway in the west of Innsbruck. Stams is a small village in a distance of just 8km to Telfs, in the west of Innsbruck and you will see its giant monastery already from a large distance, when passing by on the highway A12 or by train.Take a stop-over there in order to explore the village and the wonderfull churches, even when you dont have enough time in order to take the guided tour through the monastery.Read more about this place in my Stams-page! Dont confuse it with the town of StaNs !It is interesting as well, but situated in the other direction !

Telfs in Tirol

by globetrott

Telfs is an interesting village west of Innsbruck with some interesting local architecture in the centre of town. All of these buildings are in the main street through the old part of Telfs, where also the parade of Schleicherlaufen (read more about it in my Telfs-page)will go through."Lüftelmalerei" is the expression for the wonderful paintings and frescos that you can still find on many houses of that area, and also in places closeby in Bavaria. ----------------------------------------How to get to Telfs:take the train or the highway from Innsbruckthe distance is about 30 min for both of them !

Spare 15 min for a great church in Tirol

by globetrott

This is a very special church and it will take you only 15 extra minutes for a stop-over on a tiny carparking when you drive on the highway from Innsbruck in direction Kufstein:Karlskirche in Volders is just about 1 km from Wattens and it is directely situated next to the highway to Innsbruck. The church dates back to the year 1620 and Martin Knoller made the wonderful frescoes of the ceiling and the painting of the main altar. The church is open for visitors all day long and you will be able to take a look through the ornate iron-fence that is worth seeing as well. Its a pilgrim-church and the church for the monastery-school next to it.---------------------------------------------How to get to this church:This church is just about 10 meters from the highway A12 and it has its own highway-parking, when you are taking the highway from Innsbruck to Kufstein (not in the other direction!),...

Hall in Tirol: close to Innsbruck

by globetrott

When you plan a visit to Innsbruck, spare an extra half-day for this very special town : Hall in Tirol is just about 9 km east of Innsbruck and it will still show you a lot of medieval and baroque houses and large parts of the medieval townwalls. Hall in Tirol did produce for some centuries most of the silvercoins that were used in the austrian empire and there is an interesting museum about this in Hall nowadays. It is best to calculated about 2-3 hours in order to see the most interesting parts of this town, and when you can spare half a day, that would be even better.-------------------------------------How to get to Hall in Tirol:Hall in Tirol is just 9 km east of Innsbruck, take the highway to get there or the train.

Burg Tratzberg in Stans / Tirol

by globetrott

Burg Tratzberg in Stans is in a distance of just a few km from Wattens and you will see it also when driving on the highway from Innsbruck towards Kufstein. The castle has wonderful frescoes in the innercourt and a really interesting interior with unique furniture of the 15th and 16th century.Unfortunately its not allowed to take any photos inside the rooms, but at least it was allowed to take pics in the innercourt. Almost every hour there is a guided tour and thats also the only way to see this castle's interior. There is a large carpark from where you can eighter walk abourt half an hour to the castle or you take the "road-train" to the castle, the price was just 2 euros p.p. return and it really saves you a lot of time and sweat. ------------------------------------------How to get to Stans :Burg Tratzberg is east of Innsbruck, about halfway between Jenbach and Stans, get there by...

Gmünd: a lovely old town in southern Austria

by globetrott

Gmünd is an interesting, small town in the south of Austria and it is of surprises. You will still find most of the medieval townwall, some towngates and high above the village there is also an old castle-ruin. Inside of these old castle-ruins you will find a very good restaurant with family-friendly prices and the only place where you have to pay some entrancefee is the tower, where you will find a box where you can/should throw in 1 euro per person before stepping up. I skiped this part of the castle because the stairs were quite worn out and I was in a hurry anyway and the view from the restaurant-terrace was great as well !There is a hidden road up to the castle, but parking up there is limited and walking uphill is done easily anyway from 2 sides of the hill. The town-square / Hauptplatz of Gmünd has a lot of lovely and beautiful baroque houses, dont miss to take a walk there, there...
