Have you ever seen a "divided church" ?

by globetrott

Geteilte Kirche in Gmünda "divided church"This little church, divided into 2 parts with a street between them is close to the Portsche-museum in Gmünd, so you can combine it with an excursion to that area:In the first moment the expression "divided church" sounds very strange and when I saw the signposts to this church I wanted to know what it is all about this so-called "divided church".Talk a look at my photos: on the left there is the church with the altar and on the right - divided by the road in between - is the part of the church, where the audience / the believers are sitting like on a balcony. The road between the 2 parts of the church was the main road once and I read that the people who had been sentenced to death could walk that way on their last way to the hangman through the church and ask for forgiveness. In order to get there you have to go through the "Oberes Stadt-tor" in...

Villach : Burg Landskron

by globetrott

Burg Landskron: high above VillachVillach is a small town in the south ov Austria and high above this town you will see a great castle-ruin. At first you have to pay a toll for the steep private road to the castle. The parking on top is free of charge and the visit of the castle is free of charge as well. Its mainly a restaurant with various restaurant-gardens with an excellent view and large halls for incentives and private festivities. You can attend eagles-shows there, where eagles are flying free close to the audience, its a pity that I missed it, they have 3 such shows in summertime and thats the only thing you have to pay extra !Greifvogelshow in Landskron-castle : eagles are flying free in the arena of the castle several times a day ! I missed the eagles-show in a large "arena" on top of Burg Landskron. I saw a similar performance in Werfen castle close to Salzburg some time ago...

Villacher Fahrzeugmuseumis a nice car-museum for the whole family ! Dont expect any special showcars there, but instead you will see mainly the common cars of the ordinary people of past times and most of them are still in a very good condition. It was great for me to see again some of the cars that my parents had over the years since my childhood, it was just like a step back into these times. This museum shows also a nice collection of motorbikes and mopeds / mofas and bicycles, plus radios, photoequipment, sewingmachines and a lot more collectibles of the past 100 years. ----------------------------------Villacher Fahrzeugmuseum is open for visitors:daily between 10.00am and 06.00pmentrancefee is 6,50 Eurosa printed guidebook is 2,90 Euros extraand it includes also the fee for photographers !Their address is: Zauchen or Villach-Zauchenhttp://www.oldtimermuseum.at/ How to get there:...

Spital an der Drau

by globetrott

Make a stop in Spital an der Drau, while driving from Villach to Gmünd, it is an interesting small town with a great palace and some lovely baroque houses. The main attraction of Spital an der Drau and a good reason to leave the highway A10/Tauernautobahn is Schloss Porcia, the former palace that is used nowadays mainly for theatre-productions.The palace dates back to the year 1524 and is worth seeing inside as well, but unfortunately I was there late in the evening and was able to take just a few photos of the outside of the palace.---------------------------------------Spital an der Drau is in southern Austria, ca.250km south of Vienna and some Km north of Villach. Go there by train or by car and combine it with a visit to Hochosterwitz castle, Villach, Gmünd (Porsche-museum)

Stuebing is a small village just about 18km north of Graz and there you will find one of the most interesting open-air-museums in Austria :Freilichtmuseum / open-air-museum StuebingOn quite a large area in a side-valley you will find more than 90 old traditional buildings from all parts of Austria, that were reconstructed again in Stuebing some years ago. All of these buildings are fully furnished and after having payed the entrance-fee of 7,50 Euros, you may walk around on your own. - The whole tour takes more than 2 hours !------------------------------------------In order to get to Stuebing you can take the "Watzke"bus #110 or bus #131 from Lendplatz in Graz, or you can drive a few Km on the highway - direction Bruck an der Mur and leave at the 2nd exit of the highway !

Bad Fischau: a restaurant in Hundertwasser-style

by globetrott

Bad Fischau is another place in Austria, where you will be able to see some interesting architecture by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Bad Fischau is a small spa and also a restaurant on a carparking of the highway A2, south of Vienna. There once used to be an ugly restaurant and Friedensreich Hundertwasser was asked to decorate it a bit in his very own style. And that is what happened here: The ugly building with large windows and a lot of naked concrete dating back to the early 1950s looks nice and interesting all of a sudden thanks to Hundertwassers architecture. In the basement of the restaurant you will find the restrooms and they are also a part of Hundertwasser's architecture. There are some funny ideas, colorfull tiles and even a puppet sitting in front of the toilet. Hundertwasser created also his own german word for his kind of architecture : "behübschen", thats a word that did...

Bad Blumau: a spa in Hundertwasser-style

by globetrott

Dont miss to visit Bad Blumau and its famous Hundertwasser-Therme and Spa, when you are travelling between Vienna and Graz. Its quite hard to catch a good photo of the golden dome, that you see in my main photo here, when you are not staying inside the hotel, but I tried to do my best. It was one of the principals of Hundertwasser's architecture to give back to the nature as much as you have taken from it. So he took away the grass at the place, where the hotel was built and at the end the same amount of grass was finally added on top of the building. And trees that had to be taken away there, were planted there again afterwards and sometimes even on the balcony of the house. Not everything, that was planned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser is built yet and some parts obviously will never be built at all. But you can see a small-scale-model of the resort as planed by him in one of the halls...

It is a boarding school today and well known for the beautiful interior of its basilica, the library and a few beautifully decorated rooms inside the monastery.
