The Schloss Leopoldskron Palace

by traveldave

The Schloss Leopoldskron Palace is a privately owned villa located on the outskirts of Salzburg. Anyone familiar with the movie, The Sound of Music, will recognize it as the setting for the von Trapp home. The Schloss Leopoldskron Palace was built in the early 1700s in the Rococo style of architecture by Prince Archbishop Leopold Anton Firmian as his private residence. It was designed by Bavarian architect Pater Bernhard Stuart, a Benedictine monk from Regensburg and professor of mathematics at Salzburg University. The building has three floors and an octagonal tower in its center. The intricate stucco work was done by Johan Kleber. After the First World War, the villa was purchased by Max Reinhardt, a co-founder of the Salzburg Festival. During the 1930s, the Schloss Leopoldskron Palace was a center of the Salzburg social scene. Because Max Reinhardt was a Jew, he fled Austria in 1938...

Baernbach : a church by Hundertwasser

by globetrott

Hundertwasserkirche in Baernbach is an important sight for all fans of Hundertwasser's architecture : It is the only church worldwide, that was decorated by Hundertwasser. The original church was quite poor and built in 1948, shortly after WW II.The interior is quite simple, made by other artists, Hundertwasser made mainly the facades and the church-tower.The churchtower is my favorite part of Hundertwasserkirche in Baernbach. Take a closer look for the fine details in the decorations. Friedensreich Hundertwasser was born in december 15th, 1928 as Friedrich Stowasser. His mother was jewish and 69 members of her family were deported and killed by the Nazis. Between 1938 and 1945 he became member of the HJ / Hitlerjugend in order to protect his mother and in fact he was able to.The Prozessionsweg (procession-path) around the church was Hundertwassers idea and so he had built 12 gates and...

Grafenegg castle - 60km west of Vienna

by globetrott

Grafenegg castle is a great day-excursion and you will find it in a distance of about 60km west of Vienna. Grafenegg castle , the way you see it today, was built in the 17th century and used to be a water-castle in former times. Today the moat is dried out, but still there are just 2 bridges to enter the castle. In the 19th century Graf August Ferdinand Breuner had the castle rebuilt in neo-gothic style , similar to english castles that he had seen during his travels there. In my childhood I lived 5 years in Grafenwörth am Kamp - just 4 Km from Grafenegg, and this castle was the very first castle I saw in reality, OUTside of fairytale-books....It looked very sad, but still romantic for me from the distance, as it was not possible to enter at that time and plenty of windows were just broken and people told me, that all the interior was stolen after WW II and the russian occupants even...

Radetzky,the famous White Horses & vintage-cars

by globetrott

Kleinwetzdorf in the north-west of Vienna is the place, where Feldmarschall Radetzky is buried.Josef Gottfried Pargfrieder was a rich and weathly merchant, who delivered most of his goods to the austrian army. He became a good friend of Feldmarschall Radetzky and his friend Feldmarschall von Wimpffen and offered them a special place to be buried : the "Heldenberg" (the hill of heros). Radetzky at the other hand did not enough money for a nice place to be buried, so he agreed about Heldenberg and now his remains are down in the tomb below the obelisk, next to Pargfrieder and von Wimpffen. After the death of Radetzky Pargfrieder tried to sell Heldenberg for 1 million Kronen to the emperor, who did not want to have it, so Pargfrieder, who did not have a family finally gave it to the emperor as a present.------------------------------------------------Next to Heldenberg you will find a...

Ruine Aggstein

by globetrott

Ruine Aggstein is a medieval castle of robber-barons in the Danube-valley between Melk and Krems. A steep and rather small one-way-track leads up the hill, where you have a tremendous view over the valley - the old knights really knew where to build their castles and from their castle they had a great place to watch out for victims who would have to pay high tolls for the transport of their goods on the river Danube. You have to pay a small entry-fee of about 3,- € for the ruins and can walk around on your own - and you also have a nice self-service-restaurant with local food inside the ruin .The castle and the restaurant is open until sundown. There is a small rock with just a wooden fence around it now, that once was called "rosary" - a tiny garden high up on the hill. This "garden" was used to get rid of enemies and prisoners, in a brutal and very direct way:In the old times it had NO...
