Rust & Neusiedler See

by globetrott

Rust is a great daytrip from Vienna and it is situated at the banks of Neusiedler See, the largest lake of Austria, it is surrounded by a thick belt of reeds and is mostly not deeper than 2 meters or even less.Rust is famous for its population of storks, in summer 2007 there were around 63 storks to be found in the nests on top of the chimneys of almost every house in the small town of Rust.Rust is a "Freistadt" - that priviledge was granted by the austrian empire after the city had given the whole production of wine plus a certain amount of money to the court in ....Beeing a "Freistadt" furtheron included certain priviledges and high prosperity and you can still see a lot of it in the plenty of great buildings in the centre of Rust.Take a walk and you will see 3 churches in quite a small town, a really high number of fine restaurants and wine-cellars.Auge Gottes - Haus (my 2nd pic) is a...

A 161 years old bridge

by omehes

While you visit Semmering and its ski resort, cross the resort and drive down a narrow and winding road towards Steinhaus. Apart from the scenic route and nice wooden pub, you come across a high bridge with many arcs built during the 1848 revolution which shook the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It stands in a beautiful and peaceful area only few kilometres away from the resort.

A Different Part of Mirabell Gardens

by DueSer

When visiting Salzburg, I don't think anyone would consider Mirabell Gardens as off the beaten path but most people just stay in the gardens. If you wander off the garden's path and actually head indoors, you're in for a real treat. Schloss Mirabell is the reason for the gardens and inside, you will find some amazing things. One of those is the angel staircase. Carved in 1726, it's a beautiful piece that can hold your attention for several minutes. The other is the ceiling. It reminds me of a wedding cake. It's white and pink and delicately accented with plaster flowers. It's free to get in to this palace, that was originally built in the 1600s but rebuilt in the 19th C. after a fire. When I was there, taking these pictures, I passed a couple of women, one of who made a snide comment about how I was wandering around inside instead of being outside but don't make the same mistake she did....

Enjoy the Simple Things

by Wife_of_chaser

Choose a block and just start walking, especially in residential parts of the city. The summer houses are so unique and well kept, it makes for a very relaxing walk and if you have children there's a certainty you'll run across a park or playground along the way. Also a good way to find little family restaurants and shops off the main streets.
