Hartberg, between Graz and Vienna

by wadekorzan

If you happen to be travelling between Vienna and Graz, and you would like to make a break in a really pretty and typical town instead of at one of the highway rest stops, it pays to make the very short detour to the center of Hartberg. Hartberg is said to be the 2nd prettiest town in the Austrian province known as Styria (Steiermark), and we are really happy we stopped here. The town has just over 6000 inhabitants and has one of the best preserved old medieval town centers in Styria, the town itself having been founded in the year 1122. It pays to just wander around the main pedestrian street, but if you're looking for specific "sights", then there is the old town wall, the church on the square called "Kernstockplatz" (built according to the rules of the Capuccin monks), the Hartberg Castle (in the middle of town), and the city hall.

History Everywhere

by 850prc

Almost every single little town in Austria, or in the crown of Europe for that matter, has its share of history on display. Be it a church tower, a clock tower, city walls, etc... it's all there for the viewing and enjoyment. And in many cases, it's free. So, put on some comfortable shoes, get your camera set and go exploring.

Vorarlberg

by turnip2000

Located in the far west of the country on the Swiss/Liechtenstein border Voralberg has its own variety of German (like Swiss German) and cuisine (try a bit of horse). Worth the trip especially as a nice contrast to the oh so sophisticated Vienna. According to a recent poll, still today more than 80% of people would favour joining Switzerland over remaining part of Austria.

Higest in Austria - Grossglockner

by nhcram

I waa nervous of going on the Grossglockner pass as I was told of the many turns in the road and the height at which it takes you. I need not have worried! I am so glad we drove up there (and of course down again)We started our journey about 8.30am as we had both woken up early. The journey can take you as long as you like but stopping on the way to take photos and take in the magnificent views is an absolute must. The first part of the journey is free but then you reach a toll and you have to pay to go the rest of the way.The road is 48 km long and was built between 1930 and 1935. There are numerous parking spots on the way and there is an observation tower at Eidelweiss spitze. If you are lucky (and we were you can even see marmots which live in the montains. They are beatiful creatures.

The Durnberg Salt Mines

by traveldave

The area around Salzburg contains vast salt deposits which have been mined for hundreds of years, and the city was named after its most important commodity (salz is German for "salt"). An interesting and fun side trip involves a visit to the Durnberg Salt Mines. At the entrance, men and women are directed to seperate changing rooms where they put on overalls for the descent into to the mine. An electric mine train takes visitors deep into the heart of the mountain. Once inside, the tour proceeds on foot, although when visitors descend to different levels, they slide down long, polished wooden slides. The mine shafts have been carved into solid salt, and there is a large salt lake deep inside the mine. On top, there is a museum which has informative exhibits that explain the history of salt mining over the centuries.

Maria Saal near Klagenfurt

by Paul2001

The Maria Saal is a seemingly ancient pilgrimage church located a few miles north of Klagenfurt. The original church was built in the 8th century and incorporated old Roman tombstones in the construction. The carving pictured here on the south facade of the building is an excellent example of one of these tombstones. It is suppose to portray a Roman postal wagon. The church was rebuilt in the 14th century. It is surrounded by fortified walls which were used to defend the church against maurading Magyars and Turks. The interior of the church has the usual Gothic religious relics but is most famous for a 1425 image of the Virgin Mary.

Petersfriedhof (St. Peter's Cemetery) in Salzburg

by Paul2001

The Petersfriedhof (St. Peter's Cemetery) in Salzburg is an ancient cemetery where many of the most important families of Salzburg have been buried. One such person is the sister of Amadeus Mozart, Nannerl Mozart an accomplished violinists in her own right. On the grounds of the cemetery are several chapels, the most important of which are the Romanesque Chapel of the Holy Cross and St. Margaret's Chapel. The Petersfriedhof also has a small set of catacombs carved into the rockface of the hill pictured here. It was used by early Christians.
