The VogtturmIn in Zell em See

by Paul2001

The Vogtturm is folklore museum located in an interesting old tower that is part of the 16th century Rathaus of Zell-em-see. The tower actually was built long before the rest of the building and dates from the 9th century. Inside the museum, there is the usual array of costumes, decorative and popular artifacts that comes along with "folklore" museums. I was a little spent on such pieces by this time in my trip and found that most of it was unmemorable.

Swarovski's Crystal Museum

by Bregman

If you are a crystal fan and you are in the Tyrol area, near the town of Wattens, you should visit the Swarovski's Crystal Museum. Caution: Be aware that the museum has a huge 'gift shop' at the end. This shop is full with expansive crystal artifacts.

The South-East......

by tigger_bounceuk

I've lost count of the people I've told about the second largest city in Austria......none of them had heard of it!GRAZ is tucked away in the South East in Styria It's friendly and much more 'typical' of local life. There are still mountains surrounding it (if you take the train from Vienna, you travel through the Ennstal past Schladming) as well as easy access to surrounding countries, like Slovenia, Croatia, Italy.........Although some parts of it look very traditional, it is a university city with a young population and was even the European city of Culture a couple of years back.

Moserwirt - Bad Goisern

by nhcram

The food here was typical of most restaurants we found in the region. The Wiener Schnitzel was good as was the self serve salad buffet. The service was good and we were not rushed to leave even though we had finished our meal and stayed in the restarant talking to friends.

Ausgrabungen (Excavations) at Magdalensberg

by Paul2001

Anyone who has read my pages thoroughly knows that I am a sucker for old ruins. Therefore I had to visit the Ausgrabungen (Excavations) at Magdalensberg while I was in the Carinthia region but I was somewhat at a loss on how to approach it. After checking out a map in the tourist office in St. Veit I discovered that you could hike most of the way there from Hochosterwitz Castle several kilometers to the north. This seemed like fun at first but it was humid that day and the walk, all up hill, turned into a somewhat sweaty outing. Finally after stopping at a cafe and old church on top of the mountain halfway to Magdalensberg, I arrived just before it closed for the day. The site is the location of a Celto-Roman town that was located here from 100 B.C. to 40 A.D. It was more of a trading outpost for the Romans. The town was abandoned in the time of Tiberius and forgotten. Only in the 16th...

Take a hike on the Liesersteig.

by joefred28

It is located along the Lieser river, between Spittal an der Drau and the Lake Millstatt (Millstatter See.)It is a tranquil, wooded path along the fast moving river.I don't know how long it would take to go from one end to the other because we only had one and a half hour parking in Spittal and had to turn around after 45 minutes. We did not know that there was a small parking area along the path where there was no time limit and no parking fee.Don't have to worry about drinking water, it is coming out of the mountain side at several places. The path is fairly steep at some places but that did not seem to bother several bicyclists as they whizzed by us.

Look for castles!

by nighthawk

It s almost a pity we only use Austria as a travel-through-country for we see so many castles along the way.I always try to think how it must have been ages ago, when only travel was done by horse or horse pulled carriage.Don t succeed however, it must have taken them forever to get where they wanted to be!
