Stockerwirt: Stockerwirt

by Greg_V

A very nice restaurant in a very nice setting. It's hard to beat wild game in the middle of the Vienna Woods. This is the place to come if you like (or would like to try) wild game. They have other menu items, of course, but the venison, and the wild boar is delicious.

The restaurant at the Stift (monestary) in Heiligenkreuz is excellent. We walked there several evenings for dessert, and ate dinner there once. A great experience is to go to evening vespers at the monestary, and then eat at the restaurant. The food is all very good, but be sure to save room for dessert. My favorite is Moor im Hempf.

In austria you can have the most wonderfull 'restaurants' on top the mountains,in the skiresorts try to find a little hut they often have homemade products .take your plate outside enjoy the mountain vieuw. Have a Germknoedel they are absolutly the best.Have a schnaps to drink, you will instantly get warm again!!

No particular favorite, though I loved the Heurigers which featured more than the buffet, i.e. warm food. As a vegetarian it was hard to find a lot of food besides bread and salad at Heurigers that only had buffets. German Potato Salad. I probably ate at least 10 pounds of it while I was there.

I don't have a favorite, but in general the restaurants in Austria are very good. You can find a good restaurant in even the very small villages. I think this is due to the great number of tourists that visit Austria! Fritattensuppe and Wiener Schnitzel!

by oja

Wienerwald is a chain of restaurants serving just what people expect to be served in Austria - Wienerschnitzel (fried pork steak, known also as Milano steak), Rastkartoffel (roast potatoes) and Kaiserschmarn (a desert made of pancake dough). They can be found all over Austria including motorway stops. Typical of Austria are also Sachertorte and different versions of Strudl. Most of traditional Austrian food is filling and heavy, so avoid it if you're on a diet ;-)

There is no particular restaurant to mention yet a particular type of restaurant. If you wanna eat traditional Austrian food you must distinguish between East and West or even between Vienna and the rest of the country. Vienna, once the capital of an enormous empire, is a blend of people from all those former states of the old empire. That's why a typical Austrian name must not necessarily be a German name. Typical Viennese names are Hrudlicka and Navratil just as Husanovic, Petrovic or Meier and Schulz. You will hear all the time that a real Viennese has at least one grandmother from Bohemia. Anyway, a country's food is nothing else but a reflection of its population. Viennese cuisine is a mixture of Hungarian, Bohemian and Balkanese food. Certainly, there is old traditional Austrian food as well, Or what do you think where Apfelstrudel, Sachertorte and Wiener Schnitzel comes from?Fine,...

by steventilly

OK. I promise, last restaurant. Throughout the Austrian mountains and especially in the Tirol there are mountain huts. These all offer hot or cold meals and drinks throughout the day, and sleeping accomodation at night. It is claimed that you will never be turned away from a mountain hut, even if it means you have to sleep on the floor. This makes them great for hiking across the mountains. We never did anything so adventurous but we did stop at several for cooling drinks and some nice food.Location, convenience - there always seems to be one just when you really need one! Spinat Knodlen - basically semolina dumplings filled with spinach & blue cheese, drowned in garlic butter and covered in parmesan. I dread to think just how many calories were in it, but after a hard climb up the Hahnenkamm who cares!
