Hofburg is the Imperial Palace in Vienna, and the pride of the whole Austria. The build of the palace has begun in the 13th century. The oldest part of the Hofburg Complex is the Schweizerhof with its famous entrance the Swiss Gate. The Amalienburg and the Leopoldinische Trakt, the Michaelertrakt and the National Library are parts of the ancient wing of the palace. Neue Burg is the newest part of the building. That was built in the year 1913, before the beginning of the First World War. The Burggarten is a splendid component of the beauty of the palace, and the Heldenplatz – the Place of the Heroes is a popular and well-known place in front of the Neue Burg. Hofburg was the home of the Habsburgs and now it is a place for relaxing and edification for many tourists that come here, but also for the Viennese that have an attraction for the history. Gosausee on Christmas Day by nhcram We visited the lake at Gosau on Christmas morning 2004 and the glacier behind the lake stood proud. It glistened in the sun and the scenery was amazing. I never thought it could be warm in the snow... How wrong I was. The lake was frozen over when we were there but I am sure you can swim here in the summer. There is a lovely walk around the lake for young and old alike Leave a Comment Address: Salzkammergut region of Austria

In May 1869 took place into the new build Opera House the opening concert, with the Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. The new edifice was made after the plans of the architects Eduard von Nüll and August Sicard von Sicardsburg. The Viennese were not enchanted about the new construction that was certificated as a big railway station. In the Second World War’s time the Opera House was destructed by bombardments, and the new rebuilding was finished until the year 1955. The new opening of the edifice took place into the year 1955, with the opera Fidelio of Beethoven. Every year, in the last Thursday of the carnival time, the Opera Ball takes place in the there. This is a popular and famous event in Vienna, and the meat point for the High Society from the whole world. Burgthater Vienna by nhcram Lucky enough to have spent a few days in this wonderful city with VT member Ursula. The Burgtheater (the former imperial court theatre), is one of the most important theatres in Europe, and is the the second-oldest theatre still in existence. Even though it has nearly 1200 seats it is worth buying tickets in advance. Leave a Comment Address: Franz-Lisztstr. 1Phone: 43-1-51444/4105Directions: First district

The Hohenwerfen Fortress near Salzburg by Paul2001 The Hohenwerfen Castle is possibly the most dramatic situated castle that I have ever visited. I sits on a rocky crag in the middle of the deep Salzach Valley flanked by high mountains. In fact when I first saw the castle on a brochure, I was so taken with its setting and beauty that I decided to visit Austria just to see it. The photo here does not do justice to its majestic setting as I took on a rather dreary day (on top of being hungover). The fortress was built in the 11th century by the Archbishop Gebhard von Felsenstein in order to protect Salzburg from it's southern flank from invaders from Bavaria. The castle has been rebuilt several times and what you see today is general from the 16th century. The castle has been used for the most part as a prison for which it developed a severe reputation because of the inhumane conditions here. The castle can only be visited by German speaking tour. If you ask they might give you some English speaking summeries. The tour takes you through several dining halls, state rooms, a fresco chapel and torture chamber complete with a rack. There is a good snack bar here that serves beer and has a patio in the impressive courtyard. Astute observes might recognize the fortress in several films. It can be seen in the background in that insipid film "The Sound of Music" during the "Do-Ra-Mi" song. It was also used as the setting for the film "Where Eagles Dare" with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. The castle is open at wildly varying times throughout the year but it usually opens at 9am and stays open until 5pm. It cost 8 Euros to visit. Leave a Comment Directions: It is hard to miss as it dominates the village of Werfen. Werfen is 40km south of Salzburg and it makes a great daytrip along with the Eisriesenwelt ice caves nearby.

The Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Hansberger, the Imperators’ family from Austria. The edifice is a beautiful architectural jewellery piece in the middle of Vienna, and one of the most important buildings of the city. The built of the castle began in 1696, under the Imperator Leopold I that assigned the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, to build an enjoyment palace, for the imperators’ family. Between 1743 and 1749, the construction of the castle followed, under the command of the architect Nikolaus Pacassi, and under the order of Maria Theresia, and the palace became the summer residence of the Hansberger. The visitors have yet the possibility, to visit the 40 showrooms of the palace and to walk on the romantic paths of the wonderful castle garden. The name from the palace came from the many fountains that are there in the parks of it.
