When you click on my picture, you might understand the meaning more easily: There are the 2 marble sculpture-towers and between them there is another sculpture and on the right a very small person on his knees - that sculpture has sad meaning, dating back into the times, when the Nazi regime took over in Austria : The sculpture on my 2nd picture shows one of the many jews, who had to brush the streets of Vienna after the take-over by the Nazis - Doctors, Professors from university and other formerly rich and famous citicens of Vienna on their knees, cleaning the streets, watched and jeered at by their neighbours... Btw.: The sculptures were made by Alfred Hrdlicka, who still calls himself a communiste today. The mountain village Turracher Höhe, situated on the Carinthian-Styrian border is the winter hit, a small but beautiful ski resort nestling in the snowscape. Since last winter the Kornock railway and the Turrach railway, two modern and comfortable detachable six person chair lifts, have enhanced the fun of skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer on Turracher Höhe. You can take the chair lift from TH to Kornock and then continue on foot to the top. The trail ->Turracher H?he ? Kornock ? Rinsennock ? Kor Hut ? St.Wolfgang is one of the most famous and most beautiful villages of the Salzkammergut. An old steamtrain of 1892 will take you up on a hight of 1780 meters for a great view over several lakes. "Im Weissen Rössel am Wolfgangsee" is a great and well known operetta by R. Benazky and here in St. Wolfgang you will see the real Hotel "Weisses Rössel" - it is a **** Romantic Hotel now, with a great sea-terrace and even a heated pool inside the lake during wintertime Leave a Comment |
I don't remember exactly where this pic was taken, but it was in one of the towns at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser. I just want to show you this lovely chapel. Tyrol is a great area in Austria with many lovely villages with typical architecture, and mountain scenery. Leave a Comment Directions: Bundesland Tirol |
In Mauthausen you may see the former KZ ( Konzentrationslager ) of the Nazis ! Mauthausen is about 20 Km east of Linz, and the former KZ was recently restored and is open for visitors. You will need strong nerves to see all this, as already when entering the first court ( on top of my pic ) you may get an idea of the atmosphere of the KZ. The ovens were rather small in Mauthausen, as the prisoners had to work so very hard carrying big stones up the " stairs of death " ( on the left of my pic ), that most of them were killed by the hard work and the treatment by the guards... The Abbey Church of Melk is the most beautiful such building in Austria and to this day the most impressive Baroque building that I have visited. It's setting on a bluff looking over the blue Danube River is stunning. Although the abbey began its life as fortified place of worship in the 11th century it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century. Hence the marvelous baroque architecturial stylings. The abbey building is dominated by its church, the golden Stiftskircke. The church had been damaged by a fire in 1947 but has been painfully restored to its previous glory with its awe inspiring frescos and statues. I visited the abbey church of Melk on a daytrip from Vienna from which it is a 45 minute train trip. It is from Melk that you can begin boat cruises down the Danube to Krems. The Dom of Graz is a good place to start a tour of the old city of this lovely city. The cathedral was begun in 1438 but was completed many years later. The interior has been renovated in a baroque manner. The cathedral also has an interesting mausoleum. The Schloss Mirabell and the adjoining gardens is one of the most popular attractions in Salzburg. The Schloss was originally built in the early 17th century by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his mistress, Salome Alt (you got like a name like that for a mistress). Over the centuries the Schloss has changed hands a couple of times, each time being renovated by its new owners. Eventually the Schloss building would become a civic administrative building. The Schloss Mirabell has since become famous for its stunning gardens. The centrepiece of the gardens is the copper statue of Pegasus, a creation of the sculptor, Caspar Gras. There are numerous other statues within the grounds of the gardens. They include four baroque statues that surround a lovely pond. The statues here represent the four elements. From the gardens you also have a very impressive view of the Hohensalzburg Castle on the hill overlooking Salzburg. The most notable attraction within the Schloss itself is the staircase called ?Donnerstiege?, meaning ?staircase of thunder?. This is an excellent example of baroque extravagance with massive amounts of marble being used in its creation. It is decorated with many sculptures. St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) is probably one of the most significatives buildings in Wien. As many other Cathedral who have been built in a long period, the Wien Cathedral has different styles. Started at the XIII century, St. Stephen still keeping the romanic Northwest side. The major part of the building is in gothic style and was finished in baroque style. St. Stephen is also known by its famous roof, make it with coloured tiles in the shape of V. The Austrian Open-Air Museum is one of the the best such museums that I have ever visited. It is dedicated to rural life in Austria over the centuries. There are 85 authentic buildings spread out over 100 acres through the lovely Mur Valley. They include smokehouses, farmhouses, blacksmith shops and even a school. There is even a firehouse with an old fashion fire engine. These buildings have been transported here from all over the country and are maintained by the Austrian Government. The curators have gone to great care to make sure that each room in every building looks as it did hundred of years ago. Every house has all the utensils and furniture that you would find in a rural homestead in past times. This is an excellent museum to visit if you are traveling with children as they might be amused by the afore mentioned firehouse and school. The only downside to my visit was that it was a dreary day when I visited the museum. Just 8C and damp. Think about taking an umbrella. The Austrian Open-Air Museum is open from 9am to 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays. The museum closes down from November to late March. It cost 5.70 Euros for adults and 2.50 Euros for the children to visit. Leave a Comment Address: 03124/53-700Directions: The Austrian Open-Air Museum is located in the town of Stubing which is 16km north of Graz.
