Museum alter Bauernhoefe in Kramsach / Tirol

by globetrott

In case that you travel through Tirol and you want to see some great, old rural architecture, make a stop-over in Kramsach, because I am sure you will enjoy the museum there !In Kramsach you will find an interesting museum-village of old, tyrolean farmhouses that were taken from all parts of Tirol, including South-Tirol (that is a part of Italy nowadays). These houses were rebuilt again in groups like small villages and you can walk through and take a look inside the houses that are fully functional with all the furniture and machineries. There are partly farm-animals as well, so this museum is also a great place to visit for children !In my last picture : Hochmuthmuehle, a mill dating back to 1821, with a giant construction of an artificial waterway that takes the water in a wooden "bridge" over several hundreds of meters before it will finally move the large wheel of the watermill....

Swarovski Kristallwelten in Wattens / Tirol

by globetrott

When travelling through Tirol, this is a place for all fans of products by Swarovski: Kristallwelten by Swarovski might be a good reason for some tourists to go to Wattens, a small town in the east of Innsbruck. Swarovski is not really "my cup of tea" and therefore I did not go inside the exhibition, but rather had a look over the fence in order to take a photo of the famous fountain there. There is a large carpark there for visitors of Kristallwelten, and the parking is free of charge !For some more details about exhibits etc. please take a look at their webpage below !My 2nd and 3rd picture: The Swarovski-mouse was obviously one of the first works of art made by Swarovski and you can see it next to the entrance of the Kristallwelten / Crystallworld. When I read that correctely, the production of the mouse was started in 1976 more as a joke by a technical illustrator named Max Schreck,...

Schloss Ambras in Innsbruck

by globetrott

When you are travel through Tirol by car or by train, this is a great castle where you should make a stop-over for a few hours:Schloss Ambras is a wonderfull palace in the outskirts of Innsbruck. Schloss Ambras has a great collection of medieval armouries and a giant hall with beautiful and ornate frescoes all over. What I liked very much about Schloss Ambrass is the fact, that photography is no problem at all there throughout the palace and its great gardens ! Calculate at least 1-2 hours for this castle, there is a guided tour or you do it on your own, both is possible !There is also a nice castle-restaurant in the innercourt of Schloss Ambras !

Stanglwirt in Going / Tirol

by globetrott

When you are travelling by car in Tirol, and get into the area around Kufstein, this might be a great side-step for you, when you love scenic landscapes and the great local architecture:Stanglwirt is one of the best-known hotel & restaurant of the area around Ellmau and Going and it was for purpose that I listed it here as a sight, and not as a restaurant or hoteltip, because the main building is a lovely old farmhouse in the local style and I think it is really worth seeing, even when you dont go to eat there !Going and the Stanglwirt is also a great halfday excursion from Kitzbühel or Innsbruck. Stanglwirt is also a farm that you can visit, they have horses and a ridinghall and a lot more.Stangwirt is no cheap restaurant, but a great place to stop and have a look for some great rural architecture.

Elmau & the Wilde Kaiser

by globetrott

Ellmau & Wilder Kaiser is a great area for tourists in summer and in winter ! This lovely village can be visited in combination with Kufstein or Kitzbühel and the "Wilder Kaiser" is a wonderful mountain-group that is really worth to go there as well, when you are spending some time in Kitzbühel. A funicular will take you uphill and you children will find a wonderful playground up there. Also the village of Ellmau is worth seeing, just take a look at my Ellmau-page !

Innsbruck : the Golden Roof / Goldenes Dachl

by globetrott

The most famous sight of Innsbruck is without doubt the so-called "Goldenes Dachl" ( Golden Roof ) dating back to the year 1420. It was built as an extra balcony for the residence of Friedrich IV and Siegmund der Münzreiche ( Siegmund with the many coins).2657 gilded copper-tiles gave the name to this building, that is today the most famous sight of Innsbruck. In the frescos and reliefs you will see emperor Maximilian and both of his wifes and various coats of arms. The Goldenes Dachl is beautifully lighted all night and some of the fine details are best to be seen at night !-------------------------------------------- The Goldenes Dachl is open daily for visitors :May - September : 10.00a.m. - 06.00p.m.October - April : 10.00a.m. - 05.00p.m.

Rattenberg - the smallest town in Austria

by globetrott

Rattenberg is a peacefull and car-free town in Tirol, just a few kilometers west of Innsbruck, and a town with only about 900 inhabitants. Only some local people are allowed to drive to their own houses in the towncentre of Rattenberg, so walking and exploring the old town is really very easy. So you park your car ouside of the village and take a walk of just a few minutes and will get into a completely different world ! Rattenberg is one of the smallest towns in Austria and it was built on a tiny spot between the river Inn at one side and the mountains at the other side. Some parts of the medieval townwalls of Rattenberg are still visible and the most significant part of it is the towngate in my 2nd picture, facing the river Inn. The small town of Rattenberg was built at a stratigically excellent place, with high mountains at one side and the river Inn at the other side. All of the...

Hochosterwitz: Austria's most scenic castle

by globetrott

Hochosterwitz : a scenic castle owned by the same family since 1570Just imagine you drive through the landscape and all of a sudden you see a freely standing hill, that is covered all over by a castle and the only way to get into the castle is to walk up a steep path going uphill like a spiral through several gates and fortifications. Burg Hochosterwitz is owned by the same family since 1570 and their name is "von Kevenhueller".There used to be a castle at this place already in the year 860, but the castle that you see there nowadays dates back to the year 1570, when the Landeshauptmann ( similar to the president of a county) Georg Freiherr von Khevenhueller bought the castle and had it rebuilt step by step. Hochosterwitz castle was ment as a place to flee to for the whole family, who owned several castles. Hochosterwitz was special, because there was just a small path around the...
