Dornbirn: the largest Rolls Royce-museum on earth

by globetrott

In Dornbirn / Austria you will find the museum with the largest museum-collection of Rolls Royce-cars. I really did not expect to see more than just a few cars, but the total number of Rolls-Royce-exhibits is more than 1000 - thats not only cars, but also all sorts of RR-accesories, I estimate the number of cars around 80 maybe.Cars are displayed in a museum, 3000 sqm wide, on 3 different floors of a former factory and there is also a garage, where Rolls Royce cars are repaired and restored and you can even walk there and watch the workers. You will even see the original Rolls Royce of Laurence of Arabia, not in a perfect condition of course, but maybe perfect for its time and for the purpose it served for in the deserts. The hood ornament / radiator mascot / Kühlerfigur of all Rolls Royce cars is called "Emily" or the "Spirit of Ecstasy" since the year 1911.There are various versions of...

By boat from Melk through the Wachau

by lotharscheer

Depending the weather a real nice excursion from Viena would be by train to Melk, visit the abbey then boat to Duernstein, train to Krems and back to Vienna. Try to avoid weekendshttp://www.oebb.at/en/Travelling_in_Austria/Lower_Austria/Offers_and_Products/Wachau-Ticket/index.jspa bit cheaper take instead the "Einfach Raus" ticket to melk (1 day by slower trains, first train from Wien Westbahnhof at 9.18, by at vending machine, no reservation needed), 28 Euro for up tp 5 people, then with Brandner Boat at 13.40, 14 Euro http://www.oebb.at/en/Tickets/Groups/Einfach-Raus-Ticket/index.jsphttp://www.cusoon.at/brandner-schiffahrt-wachauhttp://www.stiftmelk.at/englisch/index.htmlhttp://www.duernstein.at/http://www.krems.gv.at/system/web/zusatzseite.aspx?menuonr=218454324&detailonr=220288925&bezirkonr=0

The Getreidegaße

by traveldave

The Getreidegaße, which means "Corn Alley," is the most fashionable shopping street in Salzburg, if not in all of Austria. Great pains have been taken to preserve the old-town atmosphere, and substantial alterations to the buildings are prohibited. In fact, many of the buildings do not even have electric elevators. Neon signs are prohibited, and most shops have traditional and elegant wrough-iron signs above the door. The narrow street is lined with five- and six-story buildings built by the city's burghers from the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries. This is not the place for those on a budget, as the shops and boutiques are rather expensive. Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Hermès, Bally, and Mango are just some of the exlusive retailers that are on the Getreidegaße. Shoppers can buy expensive jewelry, high-fashion clothing, rare perfumes, fine leather goods, Italian shoes, and gourmet...

"Sound of Music Tour"Cost 33 Euro a head. You can book with one of two tour companies. I used Panorama ToursIt leaves from Mirabellplatz at 9:30am and 2pm. It is a fun thing to do if you've seen the movie and know the soundtrack. It also gives you truth and Hollywood back stories, as well as history of Salzburg and it's peole.

Salzburg - Augustinerbräu Kloster Mülln

by ant1606

If you like beer and ambience, this is the right place. Both are outstanding, but there's more to make Augustiner a truly unique place. Don't miss a great experience! You're welcome to bring in your own food to be drowned in local beer. In the event you walk in barehands, you'll find stores selling bread, sausage, cheese and other delicacies. Then you'll take your one-liter (a quart) ceramic beer mug, rinse it at a fountain and present it to a counter. You pay the due and get it back with a fragrant head. Walk through huge rooms and find your seat, joining other joyful parties at long tables or chosing a more intimate 4-seater one. Best would be sitting next to elderly chatters, with whom you might try to exchange buzzed conversations in kind-of-German language. It's also a place for families and the alternative would be to talk with low-grader kids, who are yes, sober, but still speaking...

DACHSTEIN

by mtncorg

The Dachstein is one of several Alpine massifs featuring high elevated limestone plateaus. To the north, the peak is more sloped, falling down to the lakes of Halstatt and Gosau. From near Halstatt -itself a very interesting town crowded along the shores of the Hastatter See - you can take the Krippenstein cable car to the Dachstein Ice Cave and to a viewpoint out over the Dachstein plateau - is a great website beginning for these trips. It is the south face of the Dachstein that is incredible. Dropping 1000 meters to the pastures of the Ramsau, the sight is awesome. Cable cars ascend to the Hunerkogel (2694 meters/8840 feet), a peak along the massif's summit ridge. There is a ski area atop here. From the upper station, the high peaks of the Tauern (Grossglockner and Grosser Venediger) appear in the south. The Alps of the Salzkammergut are to the north. The Hohe Dachstein - massif high...

Ski jumping mad

Schloss Schonbrunn

by DueSer

With over 1400 rooms, and who knows how many acres, this palace is, in my opinion, better than the Hopfburg Complex because, Schonbrunn is what I imagined a European royal palace would look like. It is HUGE. It's surrounded by woods to keep out the riff-raff. There are fountains and a zoo and a greenhouse and a hedge maze and several other attractions all accented by amazing gardens. Maria Theresa ruled from here for 40 years. Mozart performed here when he was six years old. Marie Antoinette grew up here. It's magnificent and I don't use that word very often. That's the good part. The bad part is that it can be expensive and the ticket options are insanely confusing. There are multi-option tickets or individual site tickets, tickets for children, tickets for this that and the other thing. Ug! But here's the other good part - to just walk around the grounds admiring the house from the...

Vienna is the cultural heart of Austria if not Europe. It was the seat of the Habsburg dynasty that ruled central europe for much of the 14-17th century. It is also still and has been a center for classical music.
