Europe's Bridge, near Innsbruck

by hopang

Europabrücke or Europe's Bridge in English is located just south of the city of Innsbruck. It was officially opened to traffic in 1963. Construction of the one of the most famous bridges in Europe began in 1959. The bridge is approximately 780 meters long and 192 meters high from the bottom of the valley. It was at one time the highest bridge in Europe! The six lane A13 Brenner autobahn passes over this bridge between Austria and Italy. A13 Brenner autobahn is a very busy traffic highway with heavy traffic around the clock. Below the bridge is the Sill River meandering across the Wipp Valley. The snow-covered Alps can be seen from the bridge. Occasionally there are bungy jumping from the top of the bridge arranged by the organisors. Europabrücke is among the five highest bungy jumping locations in the world as described in the website below.

Hallstatt: decorated headbones & more

by globetrott

Hallstatt is a MUST for every tourist in Austria and although it is a village of just 2000 inhabitants, it gave the name to the so-called "HALLSTATT-CULTURE" - it was a time in the stone-age and refers to the kind of settlement in Hallstatt. In Hallstatt the catholic cemetery is so very small, that the dead bodies remain under the earth only for a a few years, so they will be un-buried after a few years, cleaned and decorated and placed in the carnel. The Carnel is open during the day and in the high season you can only enter it after having payed a small fee of 1 Euro to the lady at the entrance. You also get a small leavlet with some infos and pics togeather with your entrance-ticket.You may walk into the carnel on your own all the rest of the year or you may just take a look through an iron fence into the carnel and take your pics from there like I did for that picture. The head-bones...

Werfen : a great castle & falconry

by globetrott

The castle of Werfen can be visited easily on your own, you may walk uphill or take the newly built funicular. Already at the ticket-box at the large parking you have the possibility to fix certain times for the tours on your ticket ! Audioguides are available in vqarious languages. The belfry of Burg Hohenwerfen dates back to the year 1535 and inside of its basment you may get inside and find the souvenir-shop there, the upper part of the tower is part of the guided tour and you may see the large clockwork and the bells that were ring in case of fire or enemies approaching. On the very top of the belfry you will have a great panorama-view, but there is just a quite steep stair to climb up.Dont miss the falconry-show :Normally I never cared very much about such performances, BUT this time I had payed for it in my ticket already and it started exactely when the guided castle-tour was...

Hellbrunn is a Must in Summertime !

by globetrott

Hellbrunn is a baroque castle in the south of Salzburg and every summer you will be able to enjoy there quite an unique park with waterplays and more :1)Fuerstentisch (table of the prince-bishop) and the Roemisches Theatre (roman theatre) is the first attraction of Wasserspiele Hellbrunn that you will see during the guided tour. This table has some fountains built into each and every chair, except the one for the princebishop of course and back in the old times, while everbody was dining the fountains would start to flow all of a sudden. It certainly was a lot of fun in the old times and it also is still today, when the tour-guide will ask for voluteers...2) Muschel-Grotte / Grotto of the sea-shells is another attraction of the guided tour through Wasserspiele Hellbrunn. That Grotto was built in the basement of the Schloss Hellbrunn, and when leaving that bGrotto again, you better watch...

Salzburg : the brithplace of Mozart

by globetrott

Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and you will be able to enjoy all important sights there within 1-2 days :1) The fortress of Hohensalzburg thats the castle high above the city orf Salzburg. Get up by a funicular or take the steep path uphill. The fortress is like a small town with a church, various buildings and parks and an interesting museum. From the terrace you will have an excellent panorama-view of the alps ! At Christmas-time, they also have a christmas-market there.2)Schloss Mirabell has an interesting history : It was built in 1606 by Salzburg's Prince-Archibishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his mistress Salome Alt.HE was a catholic archibishop and SHE was the daughter of a jewish merchant. They had 10 children and even had something like an official wedding-ceremony in Salzburg ( and at the same time he told the pope in Rome, its all not true, and only bad propaganda by...

Graz : The Landhaus & a lot more

by globetrott

These are some other attractions of Graz :1) The Grazer Landhaus with these great arcades reminds me a lot of the great italian architecture of the Renaissance. You can enter this innercourt during the day freely and without restrictions - no admission charge - and in wintertime they will have a giant crib made of ice there !2) Sporgasse Nr.3 is something special for all fans of great Jugendstil / Art-Nouveau-facades.Sporgasse is a small street going up the hill from Rathausplatz - this house is on the left just a few steps from Rathausplatz - and as the street is rather narrow there, you might easily miss it.3) The Dom, the cathedral of Graz looks rather like the church of a small village from outside, BUT it is really worth to go inside and you will be surprised by the many unique works of art there. The most precious works of art inside the Dom are certainly the 2 shrines on both...

Graz : the 2nd largest city in Austria

by globetrott

Graz, the 2nd largest city of Austria, is worth a visit as well ! My favorite attrations there are :1) The Grazer Uhrturm (belfry) is certainly the most famous sight of Graz and you will see it from many places all over the city. At first the Uhrturm was part of the fortification and got it's characteristic clock and the wooden balconies not before the year 1712.2) Landeszeughaus : it is one of the biggest collections of medieval arms and iron-armories in the whole world ! And the most interesting fact about this museum is , that the Zeughaus still looks the same as hundreds of years ago and it has a total of 30.000 rifles, helebards, swords, guns, etc.You could equip a medieval army of several hundred men with these weapons and even the stairs are made in a way, that the troops are able to march into the different floors, take their weapons and get into war !3) The Burg of Graz dates...

What to do when you have only 2-3 hours in Vienna

by globetrott

In the forum we often have the question : What can I do in Vienna, when I have just 2-3 hours to spare ? This is what I can recommend to you as a good first impression of a city that might deserve in fact at least 3-4 days to see the most important places :It is the best, when you start at Karlsplatz or Oper - both of them are in the centre of town and it is really easy to get there by tram and U-bahn U1, U2 and U4.On Karlsplatz you will see first the Art-Nouveau-stations built by Otto Wagner , they are used as a cafe today. Karlskirche is great to see from a distance already, but to enter it, you have to pay an entrance-fee.Go back to Ringstrasse and Oper :take first tram #1 (the right place to enter the tram is in front of the Bristol-hotel!)and go till Schwedenplatz, there you change to tram #2 and will get back to the opera. A dayticket will allow you to hop on and off these trams...

Oberösterreich ( Upper Austria )

by Leipzig

Upper Austria means stunning mountains, the crystal clear lakes and vast forests. In the north there are granite and gneiss hills, which are separated in the middle of the province from the Alpine foothills by the Danube valley, and to the south lie the limestone Alps and the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut region. The capital of this federal state is LINZ. I have been once to this state, visiting Linz and the area around. Have a look on my Linz page for more photos and info about.

W I E N ( Vienna )

by Leipzig

The federal state of Vienna is the smallest of Austria. It is situated on the eastern foot of the Alps. Vienna is Austria's capital and with it's 1.6 Million inhabitants it houses approx. one fifth of the country's population. It is a very diverse city, with many ethnic groups residing there.I've been to Vienna in 2002. Have a look at my Vienna page for more details.
