Museum of Fine Arts (Kunsthistorisches Museum in German) is located at Maria Theresienplatz just opposite the Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum). It is one of the leading art museums in the world! The facade of the building is identical to that of the Natural History Musuem. It was also designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer in neo-Renaissance style of architecture and was constructed of sandstone between 1870 and 1890. It was officially opened by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1891. The building measures approximately 170 metres long, 70 metres wide and 60 metres high.It houses mainly famous art collections of the Hasburgs. Neptune Fountain, Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna

by hopang

Neptune Fountain (Neptunbrunnen in German) is located at Schlosspark at the foot of the hill between the Gloriette and Schönbrunn Palace. The popular Baroque fountain was constructed in 1780 in honour of Empress Maria Theresia. It was believed to be designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and Wilhelm Beyer. In the center of the grotto rises the sea god Neptune in a chariot which is in the shape of a shell. He is holding a trident on his left hand. Kneeling on his right is Thetis, the sea goddess looking to Neptune for a favour in favour of her son Archilles who was about to capture Troy. A nymph is located on his left. Several Tritons who are actually half human and half fish can be seen riding on horses at the foot of the grotto as depicted in our second and third photographs. Don't miss the Neptune Fountain when you visit Schönbrunn Palace on your vacation!

Gloriette, Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna

by hopang

The Gloriette (literally meaning little glory in French) is located on the summit of the hill approximately south of Schönbrunn Palace. It is also a major tourist attraction in the summer months! The viewing platform complete with a café cum restaurant certainly has a commanding and spectacular view of the surrounding area and the palace due to its height. Unfortunately the Gloriette is not opened during the winter months. The Gloriette was designed by popular Austrian architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and was constructed in 1775 in neo-classical style of architecture. The Gloriette was built to dedicate as a monument to peace. We certainly hope to visit the Gloriette in our next trip to Vienna!

It is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Vienna State Opera is famous for its Vienna Philharmonic whose members are recruited from the Opera House. Haas Haus is located at Stephansplatz just opposite St. Stephen's Cathedral in the heart of the city of Vienna. It was designed by Austrian architect Hans Hollein and was constructed in 1990. Many Viennese did not want yet another glass building so close to their historic St. Stephen's Cathedral!Today many Viennese have accepted that this modern shopping mall is an architectural masterpiece. It is considered one of the most beautiful architectural buildings in Austria! Incidentally St. Stephen's Cathedral reflects perfectly and beautifully in the glass facade of this modern Haas Haus as depicted in our photograph above.
