Hundertwasserhaus, Vienna

by hopang

Hundertwasserhaus (Hundertwasser House in English) is located at the corner of Löwengasse and Kegelgasse in the third district of Vienna. It has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city! This oddly designed residential building was designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and constructed in 1985. It is a colourful apartment block with crooked, uneven and undulating walls, balconies and terraces. Plants and trees are growing from the roofs. There are approximately 50 apartments in the building. It has certainly become part of cultural heritage in Vienna. Hundertwasser can be compared to Antoni Gaudi who designed La Pedrera or Casa Mila in Barcelona! Unfortunately visitors are not allowed to enter and visit the apartments as they are private properties. Undoubtedly the building has an amazing piece of architecture, it has to be said! Visitors can visit Kalke Village...

Stadtpark, Vienna

by hopang

Stadtpark (City Park) is the largest public park in the city center of Vienna. It was founded in 1862 as the first public park of the City Council. The park is certainly a great place to go for a stroll, sitting on a bench, people watching or simply breathing in fresh air to escpae the chaos of the city! The park has also been a favourite meeting place for the locals.A bronze statue of musician Johann Strauss Junior (1825 - 1899) with a violin in hand was designed by E. Hellmer and erected in the park in 1922. The bronze statue is certainly one of the most photographed monuments in the city of Vienna! When we were in the park, some Chinese practitioners were practising Falun Gong with music in the park. We believe they were trying to recruit new members. They certainly attract some attention from foreign tourists visiting the park!

St. Charles' Church, Vienna

St. Charles' Church (Karlskirche in German) is located at the southern end of Karlsplatz, approximately 200 metres from the subway station with the same name. The church was constructed in the early 18th century and was designed by Johann Bernard Fisher von Erlach in Baroque Rococo style of architecture. This Roman Catholic church is the most famous Baroque church in Austria. It was built in honour of St. Karl Borromäus. St. Charles' Church is approximately 55 metre long, 40 metre wide and 70 metre high. Two 33 metre high Triumph columns were added in front of the church later. The church can be visited by local and foreign tourists for a couple of euros.

Austrian Parliament, Vienna

by hopang

The Austrian Parliament Building is certainly one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Vienna. It was constructed between the years 1873 and 1888 and was designed by Theophil Hansen. Its front facade has eight Corinthian columns, reminiscent of a Greek temple. It is also a favourite meeting place for the locals.Today the Parliament houses the National Assembly of the country and the Ministry of State and can be visited through guided tours. Pallas Athene Fountain located in front of the Parliament Building was also designed by Theophil Hansen and was sculptured by Karl Kundmann. The figures of the gods at the base of Greek Goddess of Wisdom represent the rivers Danube, Inn, Elbe and Vltava. Unfortunately the Austrian Parliament Building was extensively damaged during the Second World War through bombing in 1945 and was completely reconstructed in 1956. The Statue of...

Burgtheater is the National Theatre of Austria. It is located just opposite Rathaus (the City Hall) and is considered one of the popular tourist attractions in the city of Vienna along with the City Hall. If you visit Vienna before Christmas or during Christmas festive season, you will be able to see beautiful Christmas lightings and decorations around Rathauspark between Burgtheater and Rathaus, not to mention the large lovely Christmas Markets at Rathausplatz.Burgtheater was founded in the mid 18th century by Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa. It was designed by Gottfried Semper (exterior) and Carl Hasenauer (interior). It is still one of the most elegant German theatres in Europe and probably in the world! Hofburg Imperial Palace, Vienna

by hopang

Hofburg Imperial Palace today houses the official residence of the President of Austria. It was formerly used as a winter residence of Habsburg whereas Schönbrunn Palace was used as their summer residence. Hofburg has been expanded over the years to include among others the Burgtheater (National Theatre), Natural History Museum, Spanish Riding School, Imperial Library and the Treasury. It also houses several museums that are opened to the public such as Efesus Museum, Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments and the Imperial Silver Collection. As we were in Vienna just for a short Christmas weekend holidays, we did not visit much of Hofburg Imperial Palace. We certainly hope to visit more of Hofburg in our next Vienna vacation in the near future. Opening hours for most of the museums at Hofburg are between 9.00 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. daily from September to June and extended to 6.00 p.m. daily for...

The City Hall, Vienna

The City Hall (Rathaus in German) is located at Rathausplatz just outside the Ringstrasse in the heart of the city of Vienna. It was designed by Friedrich von Schmidt in neo-Gothic style of architecture and was constructed in the late 19th century. The City Hall Building is one of the more popular tourist attractions in the city of Vienna. On top of the tower stands a three metre high statue known as the Rathausmann, a symbol of Vienna. The statue was designed by Franz Gastell. Rathaus houses the headquaters of the municipal administration of the city of Vienna. Opening hours are 24 hours daily. If you visit Rathaus in particular and Vienna in general one month before Christmas eve, you will be able to visit the largest and colourful Christmas markets in Vienna located at Rathausplatz. We arrived in Vienna on Christmas day, so all Christmas markets were already closed. Nevertheless we...

Belvedere Palace, Vienna

by hopang

Belvedere Palace is made up of two main buildings with Baroque style of architecture, viz Upper Belvedere (Oberes) and Lower Belvedere (Unteres). Many visitors have confused between the two. Even we were mistaken the first time we searched for the location from the map. Upper and Lower Belvedere were constructed in the early 18th century under Prince Eugéne of Savoy by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt.Lower Belvedere is home to Austrian Baroque Museum. Upper Belvedere houses Austrian's 19th and 20th century Art Gallery with works of several popular Austrian artists, one of whom is Gustav Klimt whose famous art was known as "The Kiss" (photo 5 of our hidden photos). You will be able to see many posters of this famous painting in many parts of Vienna, even at Vienna International Airport (VIE). There is also Museum of Medieval Art which is housed in Orangery of the Lower Belvedere....

The palace was constructed in the late 17th century under Leopold I and was later extended in the 18th century under Maria Theresa. We visited Schönbrunn Palace during the cold dark Christmas weekend. The queue was still fairly long even though it was winter in Austria. Unfortunately photography and video recording is not allowed inside the palace. The Imperial Tour of the palace with audioguide costs 9.50 euros per adult which covers approximately 20 state rooms and takes approximately half an hour. Grand Tour with coverage of approximately 40 state rooms costs 12.90 euros per adult with audioguide and takes approximately an hour. You may...
