Don't forget to turn on your lights when driving around in Austria.

When using the highway (cars and motorcycles), you will need a 'vignette' (tol ticket). You can buy the vignette at border crossings, gas stations, or at post offices. There are 10-days tickets (7.60 EUR), 2-months tickets (21.80 EUR) and all-year-round tickets (72.60 EUR).
The vignette must be displayed on the inside of the front windshield. Make sure you pick it on the right place, otherwise you can still get a fine.

There are frequent controls, fines are heavy (400 - 4000 EUR for not having a vignette)!

Always take the chairlift with the cool roofs, or the gondolas. T bars are no fun.

Use the tram in Vienna for a first tour

Vienna's extensive tram network (called strassenbahn or bim) has more than 30 routes. Trams are generally an efficient way of getting around with trams on most routes departing every five to ten minutes. Trams run underground in some parts of the city centre.

We paid 27 euro for 2, 8 days tickets, very reasonable as once punched they are good for the whole day. There were 3 of us in the city for 5 days and we still had 3 spaces left untouched that we gave away at the end of our trip. The tickets are good for the U-bahn, the buses, and the streetcars....all of which can get you anywhere in the city in little time. Very clean and only crowded during the 5 o'clock hour with everyone going home for the day. I would recommend getting a ticket or pass no matter what as you really need them to get around Vienna and there are checkpoints where you will be fined if you don't have it punched.
Also, bend the bottom of the ticket and make sure it punches in the numberd squares. We didn't know this and got lucky that we didn't get our ticket checked the 1st day.

There are two main train stations in Vienna - Westbanhof and Südbahnhof. Trains from Germany, Switzerland, and western Austria arrive at the Westbahnhof on Europaplatz, where Mariahilferstrasse crosses the Gürtel.

If you're coming from Italy, Czech Republic or Hungary, you'll arrive at Südbahnhof.
